Cowboy's Colishaw giving "little Danny" some credit.

Here's the article. There's been a lot of press here in Dallas ever since we signed Spurrier.

We laughed when Jerry Jones burst on the scene and
announced that the second coach of the Dallas Cowboys
would be worth "more than five Heisman Trophy winners
and five No. 1 draft picks."

Five years and two Super Bowls later, we had revised
Jones' suggestion of Jimmy Johnson's worth from
ludicrous overstatement to mild exaggeration. And those who had
scoffed at Jones toasted the Cowboys owner for his prescience.

In recent years, Cowboys fans have had few light moments, save for
those laughs supplied by Redskins owner Daniel Snyder. Little Danny,
the thinking goes, is the only thing that guarantees today's Cowboys two
wins a season.

I'm afraid it's time for the laughter to stop. Snyder just moved out of the
NFC East basement in the rankings of owner intelligence.

The hiring of Steve Spurrier illustrates the fundamental difference
between Snyder and Jones.

Having initially overestimated his football IQ, Snyder is determined to
learn what he doesn't know. Jones, believing he originally erred by
vesting too much power in a head coach, is determined to show us that
what he doesn't know can't hurt him.

Which approach sounds more sensible to you?

You can look at Spurrier's hiring in a number of lights. Did Marty
Schottenheimer deserve to be fired after going 8-3 the last 11 games?
Probably not. But if you can upgrade the position of head coach, should
you do it?

Absolutely.

And Spurrier will. If nothing else, his game plans will cause more
sleepless nights around the NFC East than the schemes employed by
Schottenheimer's hire, Jimmy Raye.

Turning locally, does Dave Campo deserve another season of on-the-job
training after being confined to salary cap jail and untested quarterbacks
in 2001? Sure. It's the fair and decent thing to do.

But should Jones have done everything in his power to hire Spurrier?

If you answer no, then it's only because you believe Spurrier will fail at
this level.

Jones will never hire another head coach with such a commanding
presence. But Snyder wants to acquire the best of everything and is
willing to pay whatever it costs.

He began by indulging in fantasy football but realized that multi-millionaire
veterans at every position created something less than a hungry team. So
he went another direction and hired Schottenheimer to run the show.
Snyder didn't perceive the Redskins as being on the right track, so he
reversed field again.

No NFL coach has ever received the kind of golden parachute Snyder
strapped on Schottenheimer ($7.5 million), and Spurrier just broke the
NFL bank to the tune of $25 million for five years.

Fiscally, these are not responsible moves. But if they make the Redskins
better, that's what Snyder wants.

And if Jones is paying his head coach more than $4 million less per
season than Snyder is paying his, should Cowboys fans be comfortable
with that? Is Jones passing the savings on to them?

While the Redskins owner still has his own power trip and maintains the
authority to break ties when Spurrier and the yet-to-be-hired GM bump
heads, it's nothing compared to the stick Jones wields at Valley Ranch.
Snyder is increasingly surrounding himself by powerful men with serious
egos.

Jones, ever since ridding himself of Jimmy Johnson, has hired three head
coaches that either were completely off the NFL's radar screen (Barry
Switzer) or had never interviewed for a head coaching position (Chan
Gailey and Campo).

You should also understand that Snyder's image of a bumbling fool is
largely a product of those semiannual losses to the Cowboys. Since he
became owner, the Redskins have never finished below .500 and are
26-16 against everyone but Dallas.

That inexplicable losing streak to the Cowboys has kept Snyder from
respectability. Spurrier has the offensive imagination to change all that,
even if he tries to sell the media and the NFL on an aw-shucks image.

In his press conference, Spurrier said: "We can run the ball all day. Or
we can scatter out and pitch it," giving it his best Jethro Bodine.

The reality is that Spurrier's ego will take a few body blows in dealing
with NFL fat-cat players, but that won't keep him from creating a better
product in Washington.

An overpaid glorified offensive coordinator? Yes, that's what he is.

And when everyone else had Spurrier pegged for Carolina or Tampa
Bay or any place where he could feed his golf fix, Snyder's the man who
had the means and the persistence to go out and get him.

Cowboys fans should laugh at Little Danny at their own risk.

Thanks, redskin4ever11. I had the same sentiments as blakman211 (hey, what's up with the 11's?, some kinda cult thing?).

Anyway, that was a good read. I liked it almost as much as that very complimentary article from ESPN flip-side or whatever they call it, that gave the why's and wherefore's as to why Dan Snyder (and the rest of us Redskin people, for that matter) feel the way we do about the team. :

No $hit, Om, I'm ready to rumble, too.

Hey Joey,

Thanks for explaining that.

I used to live TX too, Beaumont for awhile, then Austin (Round Rock), so I know all about being a Redskin in Cowboys country.

Hey, by the way, what position did you play in baseball? Lately, I've been punishing myself in an over 40 baseball league during spring and summer. Gotta keep fighting that big clock, ya know.
