Portis – ‘What we need most is a W’

Clinton Portis didn’t have the midweek blues.

It won’t take long for the Washington Redskins running back to perk up. A victory over St. Louis on Sunday will do just fine. Better than a case of Red Bull.

“What we need most is a W,” Portis said. “Our season didn’t end last week. We lost to a game to the Giants. Not the first time we’ve lost to the Giants. We’ll play them again. Not the first time we lost the game to open the season. We’re going to have another one next year. All our goals are still obtainable. Everything is still in front of us. “

Portis admitted thinking the opening 23-17 loss was going to be a big day for him after opening with a 34-yard run, his longest gain since 2007.

With our next five opponents all losing by more than 20 points this weekend, we have the opportunity to get not just a win but a string of them over the next month. And this board will be a much nicer place to visit

Thankfully, after last season's lessons, even if our fans get riled up with superbowl expectations (certainly probable if we go on a 4-1 run), I expect Zorn and co. to keep this team levelheaded - staying medium. And Campbell and Zorn will have a little bit of pressure off their backs.

Staying medium was part of the problem last year. Once the blood is in the water, you gotta go for the throat. I hope if we go on a run, we get crazy and put the league on notice, instead of dropping back and hoping things fall our way.

What this team needs against utter garbage like the Rams is not just a win.

What we most need is a CONVINCING W.

All merely scraping by the Rams will do is paper over some VERY large cracks that will get exposed the next time we come up against quality opposition. The darn Seahawks, who are no great shakes, put up 28 points against the hapless Rams for no return last Sunday, with Hasselbeck throwing for 3 TD's. Both our HC and QB need a dominating offensive display like that.

Just doing enough, and barely scraping by poor teams, inevitably leads to a middle of the road record when all's said and done.

And this organization has been middle of the road for WAY too many years now.

I just hope if we get the norm from this team, and just barely "scrape by" the pitiful Rams, these boards aren't enthused with gloating "see, it was only the first week, were back on track now with the W" threads.

That would serve no purpose what so ever over the long haul.

Hail.

I'm talking about overconfidence. Not overlooking an opponent (Rams, Bengals) and also not getting too low on ourselves when we lose a game that we shouldn't have lost - it certainly seems like once we started losing a couple to the Steelers/Ravens last year, that losing mentality snowballed.

Of course we all want to win every game and blow out every team but in this league, any team can beat any other team on any given week (Buffalo almost upsetting Patriots, Raiders almost upsetting the Chargers, etc. etc. etc.). If, in the unlikely (but not too unlikely) scenario in which we beat the Rams, Lions, Bucs, Panthers and Chiefs in the next 5 weeks and stand at 5-1, not only will the league be put on notice but our fans will be so incredibly ecstatic that superbowl talk would be inevitable. Naturally, such talk can't seep into the locker room as the effects of which would surely hinder the inherent necessity to get better and would only foster contentment and feelings of achievement. This is where "Stay Medium" is so essential - if the Giants had stayed medium last year after an 11-1 start, maybe they wouldn't have faltered down the stretch or lost their only playoff game. Maybe the Patriots wouldn't have been so overconfident going into the superbowl in 2007. Etc.

And it's all the more important for the team not to get down on itself after a loss. Stay medium. Our fans could certainly take this to heart
