TC4
Okay you gotta go ALL the way to the last part of this article on the Washington Times to see this one but the subject of the thread says it all pretty much: http://www.washtimes.com/sports/20030522-010834-1773r.htm And Tagliabue also pointed out the new NFL Network will enable fans to watch every preseason game. Currently, most preseason games are shown only on a local basis.

The NFL's average take will rise to $400 million, more than three times the $130 million it is getting from DirecTV this season under an expiring five-year contract, an industry source close to the negotiations told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Included in the agreement, which runs from 2003-07, is the launching of a 24-hour NFL Channel on DirecTV as early as next year. DirecTV has shown NFL games since 1995. In Demand, a pay-per-view cable TV company, also was interested in acquiring the rights to NFL Sunday Ticket. "Our partnership with DirecTV will continue to complement and support our broadcast television packages that allow us to put all of our games on free, over-the-air television," NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said. The league has deals with Fox, CBS, ABC and ESPN worth a total of $17.6 billion from 1998-05. "NFL Sunday Ticket has been a significant programming differentiator for DirecTV, helping us build a loyal subscriber base," DirecTV chairman Eddy Hartenstein said. "It's crucial for us to have programming that sets us apart from our competition." His service has more than 11 million customers and is a unit of Hughes Electronics, which is a unit of General Motors Corp. NFL Sunday Ticket allows subscribers to see all out-of-market games each Sunday during the regular season. bobzmuda
DirecTV has already secured the NFL contract for several more years. It was up earlier this year, but DirecTV came through with mad money to keep it. I guess I'll be getting DirecTV finally instead of waiting for Digital Cable to get the Sunday Ticket. =\
gridironmike
Return to Recent News Index. NFL and DIRECTV Extend and Expand Exclusive NFL SUNDAY TICKET Agreement for Five Years NFL CHANNEL to Launch on DIRECTV New York, NY and El Segundo, CA Dec 11, 2002 The National Football League and DIRECTV, Inc., the nation's leading satellite television service provider, announced today a five-year agreement to extend and expand DIRECTV's exclusive rights to carry NFL SUNDAY TICKET, the subscription television package that delivers up to 14 games each week during the NFL season. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The agreement includes a commitment to expand services to NFL fans, including the launch of the NFL CHANNEL on DIRECTV as early as next year. The NFL CHANNEL will be the first year-round television programming service fully dedicated to the NFL and the sport of football. The NFL CHANNEL will be available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, on a year-round basis. DIRECTV will continue to have exclusive satellite television rights to NFL SUNDAY TICKET through 2007 and exclusive multichannel television rights through 2005. In addition, the new agreement gives DIRECTV the opportunity for the first time to offer NFL SUNDAY TICKET subscribers exclusive enhanced technical innovations, including high-definition game telecasts, viewer-selected cameras and replays, and other advanced digital technology. "We are excited to extend our association with America's number-one satellite television distributor," NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said. "Our partnership with DIRECTV will continue to complement and support our broadcast television packages that allow us to put all of our games on free, over-the-air television. This agreement also continues the NFL tradition of leadership in sports television technology by developing more opportunities for fans to experience high-definition television and other new high-tech and interactive innovations, including a new year-round NFL CHANNEL." "For the past eight years on Sundays during football season, fans in homes all over the country have made DIRECTV their viewing destination of choice to catch unrivaled NFL action," said Eddy W. Hartenstein, DIRECTV chairman and CEO. "DIRECTV and NFL SUNDAY TICKET are a football lover's dream come true and we are delighted to renew our long-standing partnership with the NFL. NFL SUNDAY TICKET has been a significant programming differentiator for DIRECTV, helping us build a loyal subscriber base. As we look ahead, we are excited to offer football fans nationwide compelling new programming services-including high-definition and enhanced broadcasts-that they can't get elsewhere." NFL SUNDAY TICKET subscribers can view all out-of-market NFL games every Sunday during the regular season, up to 14 games each week. The preseason really improves the package if we "really" get all of them.
Awgustlab
So would this mean that even sports bars that subscribe to the NFL Ticket will be geting all of the preseason games? Because many spors bars have to try to get local feeds from their big birds on the roofs and even then they will only show the games that have the most fans at the bar to see the preseason games. Unfortunately out here in NM there are not a whole lot of Skins fans so many times I get screwed, even if I show up a few hours early to make sure they KNOW I am there for the Skins preseason game. G.Smitty
Does anyone who is from canada know if the sunday ticket we get here will let us have the preseason games? God I hope so, or else I might be forced to get one of those bootleg satelites.....
bobzmuda
I read on another article that the pre-season games will all be shown on the NFL Channel (with most on tape delay). So there's one channel and ~16 preseason games a week @ 3.5 hours each, so that's 56 hours of programming right there. We'd more than likely have to tape the pre-season games, but that's a helluva lot better than the current alternatives for the GCCrew.
CMonster
Having access to every pre-season game would be AWESOME. I think there are enough of us to watch that it's worth televising with the Sunday Ticket package. They SHOULD add it, since they are jacking the prices up so dramatically. TC4
Talking about DirecTV getting Sunday Ticket back over digital cable: DirecTV had made a better offer back on December with how they were gonna package Sunday Ticket. They had, along with the extra cash, a better plan to promote the NFL and that included adding the new NFL Channel. But there was another agenda too. I read that the TV networks that carry NFL games were dead set against NFL Sunday Ticket being on digital cable and thus, had some veto power over any deals, due to the fact that more people in the US have digital cable than DirecTV, and thus, if more people have access to NFL Sunday Ticket, more will be watching games there instead of network stations, and that would cut into both the ratings and advertising revenues of the networks local affilates, thus hurting the networks themselves in the long run. With the majority of people who get DirecTV still in rural areas of the US, thats not as big a threat to them.
Guest Trevor
This is great news. Finally be able to watch the preseason games. Too bad the price has gone up so much, but hey at least I got it at the $180 renewal price instead of $200 and up.
NASMTrainer
Even if it was 250 I would pay it. It would cost me much more than that just go and see a game with my kid.
