He espoused the investigation of our world and the cosmos using scientific method instead of mysticism. He encouraged all to read thought provoking books, some of which were placed on forbidden book lists. In addition to the Sagan book you linked to, The Demon-Haunted World: Science As a Candle in the Dark, he recommended Arthur Findlay's "The Curse of Ignorance" and Thomas Paine's "The Age of Reason".
