Snyder's patience

I haven't been on this forum long enough to know the concensus opinion of Dan Snyder. I do think it is a good thing that he is not jumping in head first in the free agent market, and signing every big name he can, the way he did two years ago. We are signing mostly affordable players, and ones that hopefully can contribute this year; I'm sure Armstead, and Green will.

Armstead, Green and Moore are good value signings because all three are penciled in as starters and none of them will have a cap number much over $1 million for 2002.

Wuerffel and Reidel Anthony are more project pickups by Spurrier and come with a lot of question marks but thankfully no signing bonuses.

What is nice to see for a change is not a refusal to spend money, but the refusal to THROW it at players who are already on the downside.

If someone wants to give Shannon Sharpe at 34 a $3 or $ 4 million bonus, let them

As long as it is not us.

what is amusing is that some fans and media talk about Jacquez Green being a 'disappointment' but are in favor of bringing back Westbrook.

the fact remains Jacquez Green has as many 50+ catch seasons in the NFL at age 26 as Michael Westbrook does at age 29, TWO.

so, who is the real disappointment?

I honestly hate to lose Westbrook, BUT, maybe it is time for him to move on. He has all the potential in the world, but has had 7 years to fulfill that potential, with just one outstanding year. He will probably go somewhere else and lead the league in every offensive category possible....with his helmet ON.

Unfortunately for the Skins, Snyder will own them for some time to come. Wether or not he matures into a decent owner who learns how to play all facets of the game or remains an arrogant tit with deep pockets remains to be seen.

His rehire of Mendes is a step in the right direction and it's Mendes tight hold on the purse strings that's responsible for the limited free agent signings. That and the cap.

As you can tell I don't care for Snyder. I don't like the way he has tarnished the image of my team. I don't care for the way he treats his employees or the way he treats the old timers. It's little wonder people are coming out of the woodwork and lining up around the block to take shots at him!

Snyder is passionate about the 'Skins, which is a major plus. At least he's not like Bidwell, who doesn't care about anything except throwing a team out on the field.

He made some mistakes a couple years ago, but I think he's figured out how to get around in the league, finally.

He made a mistake by signing Marty to a sweetheart deal to show all his naysayers that he's really not all that bad.

Like I said, he went too extreme in both directions, and now he's about smack-dab in the middle.

Semple didn't sign. In fact his agent refused to close a deal while his client was in town, which seemed kind of strange to me as Semple hadn't had any other offers.

it may be just a stalling tactic to get a few more dollars.

Whether it's patience that arises from newly acquired discipline, or from necessity due to the $11M dead money millstone around our team's neck this offseason, there's no way to know right now. Besides, Snyder got ahold of his coveted toy this year - that being Steve Spurrier. That and the Marvin Lewis encore to it may have been enought to satiate him for this year.

Time will tell, specifically when the situation again arises that we have enough cap room to sign expensive FA's like crazy. All I know is that I like so far where our FA money and efforts have gone.

[ March 28, 2002, 01:16 PM: Message edited by: redman ]
