What the NFL's coaches are saying about Spurrier

By Chris Harry | Sentinel Staff Writer
Posted March 24, 2002

Jon Gruden -- Bucs

“Anybody who has worked with me will tell you that I've cut up the Florida offense and studied it very closely. To average over 40 points a game for years at Florida is unbelievable. So if anyone is capable of lighting up a scoreboard, Steve Spurrier is one of those guys.”

Tony Dungy -- Colts

“People will say his system will have a tough time working in the NFL. That's not true. Guys that come in and are real creative, they give you problems. And he's going to give people problems with what he does offensively.”

Jim Haslett -- Saints

“I hope he's successful when he comes in at 10 in the morning and leaves at 4 in the afternoon. That will get a good trend going. None of us will have to work.”

Mike Martz -- Rams

“It'll be different for him, but he's a good coach. It doesn't matter what you do as long as you can coach really well and communicate with your players. I think he'll do that.”

Dick Vermeil -- Chiefs

“When I was at UCLA, I thought I was brilliant. Then I went to Philadelphia and found out what it was like to coach at Washington State. I think people could be hurt if they expect instant gratification 'cause it ain't going to happen.''

Dave Campo -- Cowboys

“I love that guy. I just think he's going to be great for the game, add some excitement. ... The kind of enthusiasm he brings, we need more of it. I know this: We're going to play our butts off against him.”
Copyright © 2002, Orlando Sentinel

I like Campo's and Martz's reactions the best. Hopefully, Spurrier will be put right into the Norv Turner/Mike Martz class by this time next year. Oh yeah, and to hear someone who's pretty good with offense himself like Jon Gruden to call a new coach unbelievable is a good way to head into a season.

I don't like the guy.

"Hopefully, Spurrier will be put right into the Norv Turner/Mike Martz class by this time next year." - JoeSkins

I can only presume you're speaking of Turner's offensive abilities here and not head coaching abilities.

The Norv comparison comes from the idea that Martz is a disciple of Norval because he was an assistant.

S Double thank god wont have the pompus a$$ problem that Vermeil still has as well as having the defense in the hands of Marv

You're fooling yourselves if you think that there's a single frank answer out of any of these guys. These answers represented full diplomacy mode for each coach. Think about it - they're asked their impressions about one of their peers and the coach of a competing team. Do you really think they're going to say that they think he's going to fall on his face?

WTEM Reported that S Double told his defensive coaches that they need to find something to do with themselves tomorrow because his offense will be on the field for 45 to 50 minutes and he doesnt wanting them to butt heads due to lack of boredom.

His team ABSOLUTELY quit on him last year. Losing is one thing, but when your players quit, you have lost all control.

Anybody remember that pasting the Skins put on "Mr. Haslett"?
