LoudMouth12thMan
To answer your question I think there are two things to consider. 1) Lindsey and his influence on who plays and who doesn't (if what was said about Lindsey is true). 2) Really I think it's about Marshall knowing the plays best, and the fact that Washington wasn't prepped for Mike. We were thin at quality LB play last year. If he were to play Mike who would play on the edges? Rocky is fast but doesn't know his assignments and Marshall and Holdman are too slow to play the other side. We need two above average LB's (speed, situational awareness, the whole nine...) and one solid LB IMO. We have one above avg. Backer and the rest are just there (nothing special). jtyler42
The thing most people dont realize when they talk about switching someone's position is that MW would be going from playing on a 1/3 of the field to basically playing out in space or the whole field...MW can play over the TE but in space he is not as effective...I think Lemar Marshall is a good MLB...He just needs to get healthy, and we need to keep blockers off of him...No MLB does well when he is constantly taking on OL...Just ask Ray Lewis... RDSKNfaithfull
because isn't great running backwards or running sideways facing the line of scrimmage he is a former DE who is good at attacking the ball from the edge. He is the perfect SLB.
Muzzah
When a player is doing well in his position, you want to keep him there, he has a knack for making big plays in his position... and yeah, People thought Marshall would make a good MLB and that didnt go so well. Bottom line is, he's better outside than inside
skinsman4u
Washington's defense comes alive when Washington is on the field! He's a perfect SLB as RRDSKNfaithfull alluded to. What's funny is we had arguably one of the best LB Corps in the league in 04, all of a suden "poof" it was gone, in a flash. But in 05 we proofed that we could live with what we had on the field. Then our play on the DL fell off. Chicago's MLB not much bigger than our #97, so what's the problem? Well, we have a myriad of issues vs Chicago's defense as everyone already posted. But one thing is certain when you have folks like Tank up on the D-line it allows Urlacher to go sideline-to-sideline. One thing urlacher can do is run and they play the Tampa 2 (Cover 2) a lot better than we do, because Urlacher can cover deep middle. Honest assessment Urlacher is probably a little quicker than LeMar Marshall, but he's know where near bigger. Good DTs and (1) strong DE, you know two or at least one person that can demand double teams make MLBs great. Case in point the Ravens' Super Bowl run with "Seragusa" (spelling) as their road block / big body, hell their MLB was sideline-to-sideline all day. And the Ravens' MLB play darn near returned to championship form this year, with the draft of Ngata (spelling) out of Oregon. So yeah, you must have a big body on the DL and a DE that can bring consistent speed or our second and 3rd level of defense will suffer. Good points, great discussion and strong thread by the thread starter.
skinfan31
Lets not be too harsh on Lemar. A Mike is only as good as his d-line. Last year it was horrible. Sure he's undersized in the middle, but he had a solid year in '05. D-line has to be a top priority this offseason!
skinfan31
also as good as chicago's d was last year, look at the drop off they had when their d-line got banged up
elkabong82
If we move Marcus to the middle, Madden dictates his rating will drop from 93 to 89. In all seriousness, moving players to other positions isn't as easy as it seems, and more often than not, it doesn't work out. The only position moves you ever really hear about are the ones that were successful. It's not something a lot of players are capable of. Washington probably could move to the middle, but he is one of the best in the NFL at his respective position, why mess with that now? IMO, it's better to groom a young guy for the position (Rocky?) than to move a guy over who has been at one position the whole time.
