Reaganaut Posted February 4, 2002 Share Posted February 4, 2002 Well, it's Feb 4 and we don't have a defensive coordinator. The Feb 1 deadline is past so we ought to hear this week who's going to stand beside Spurrier. So who's it going to be? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
bulldog Posted February 4, 2002 Share Posted February 4, 2002 Bill Bellichick!

I don't know, who is the new flavor of the month around the NFL?

The names thrown out so far have by and large scared me to death.

I just hope we don't reach and bring in a position coach that doesn't have the organizational ability to run an entire unit. NavyDave Posted February 4, 2002 Share Posted February 4, 2002 Just get someone who want p!ss off the corners by having them play zone instead of man to man and has an attack mentality Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Nighthawk Posted February 4, 2002 Share Posted February 4, 2002 Lovie Smith was a position coach with the Bucs and he has turned out to be a great DC. Herman Edwards was the DB's coach with the Bucs and he turned out to be a good HC. Hatlett was the LB's coach at Pittsburgh before they made him their DC and then in turn he became the HC of the Saints.

There's nothing wrong with bringing in a position coach as long as he comes from a strong defensive system.

What we need to do is find the "Defensive Bill Walsh" and hire one of his assistants. The NFL is littered with former Bill Walsh assistants who've gone on to be great OC's and HC's in this league.

We need to pick up a defensive assistant from one of the great defensive teams. We're not asking them to be HC, just DC. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
B&G Posted February 4, 2002 Share Posted February 4, 2002 Could be:

Romeo Crennel, Patriots DC. Lots of rumors floating around the web about this guy who has impeccable credentials. I hope the rumors are true.

[ February 04, 2002, 02:32 PM: Message edited by: B&G ] Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
bulldog Posted February 4, 2002 Share Posted February 4, 2002 could you run down his impeccable credentials for me?

other than being in NE this year I have never heard of the guy........... shamaran Posted February 4, 2002 Share Posted February 4, 2002 I know the perfect guy that would make the majority of the board happy --

Mike Nolan!

He's available, I think, as TE coach for the Ravens. A DC position would be a promotion, hence no need for compensation or permission to interview.

Now that Vinny's been asked back and Mendes and the rumor of George too, let's make it like Old-Home Week and get Dick's son back. I know he was a fan favorite before.

[ February 04, 2002, 03:13 PM: Message edited by: shamaran ] Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Ernie5 Posted February 4, 2002 Share Posted February 4, 2002 I believe we'd owe compensation for Crennell b/c it would likely be seen as a lateral move even though he'd obviously have more authority in DC than w/Belichick in NE. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Hauss Posted February 4, 2002 Share Posted February 4, 2002 Crennel's coaching history--Seems to have been a Parcells/Belichick protege--

Western Kentucky - Graduate Assistant (1970);
Western Kentucky - Defensive Line (1971-74);
Texas Tech - Defensive Assistant (1975-77);
Mississippi - Defensive Ends (1978-79);
Georgia Tech - Defensive Line (1980);
New York Giants - Special Teams/Defensive Asst. bulldog Posted February 4, 2002 Share Posted February 4, 2002 ok, so this guy has a modicum of experience, but perhaps it is just me being an NFL outsider, but how come no one has ever mentioned this guy before as an up and comer? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Ernie5 Posted February 4, 2002 Share Posted February 4, 2002 He has been talked about quite a bit -- Crennell that is. He was highly touted when the pre-Butch Davis Browns named him D-coordinator in 2000. I'd love to see him come here, but I'm not willing to give up a draft pick to make it happen. B&G Posted February 4, 2002 Share Posted February 4, 2002 Here you go, Bulldog:

http://noflash.patriots.cache.twimm.net/team/personal.sps?playerid=9766&playertype=2&image5.x=12&image5.y=13

P. S. I never heard much about him either but after seeing his work yesterday, I know we could do worse. Its a good sign he tutored with the Tuna and Belicek. B&G Posted February 4, 2002 Share Posted February 4, 2002 Ernie5, I think I am right when I say that although he is under contract to NE, we could get him without compensation by ofrering him Assistant Head Coach and by raising his salary. Someone correct me if this is wrong.

You know Danny's not going to be outbid by the Patriots if this is his man so there wouldn't be much NE could do if we set out to get him. Ernie5 Posted February 4, 2002 Share Posted February 4, 2002 That's a really good question. Someone's got to know. Let's face it, he'd have way more responsibility with the Redskins than the Patriots, so I'd realistically look at it as a promotion, esp. with the Asst. HC title. baralufficus Posted February 4, 2002 Share Posted February 4, 2002 i beleive as long as he is offered a job that is considered a better job then the one he has now,,,,,that he can do it .....i dont know about the whole deal , but it seems interesting Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
indyskinsfan Posted February 4, 2002 Share Posted February 4, 2002 yes and remember Spurrier said he'd be well regarded, so I wouldn't put it past the "Chick" follower. He was a key member of the special teams of the Rene Thompson, Megget, McConkey era, so he does some innovative things to special teams. He seems to fire up his kickers too.
I see now how he followed Belichick from point to point. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Dr. D Posted February 5, 2002 Share Posted February 5, 2002 Wish we could Poll the players and find a guy they would run through a wall for..........

thats the guy I want Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
bulldog Posted February 5, 2002 Share Posted February 5, 2002 the guys that will actually get players to surpass their own expectations and achieve greatness are rarely the ones the players want to see beforehand.

let's face it, the Norv Turner kind of coach is preferred by a lot of players to the tough, disciplined approach of a Parcells or say Andy Reid.

It is only after the players see the success they are having and appreciate where they are as winners that they come to think of their coaches as special.
