Johnson had previously worked with Red Zebra chief executive Bennett Zier at sports radio station WTEM when Zier was general manager. Johnson was WTEM's Redskins sales manager. "Steve Johnson is the best play-by-play sales professional in the country," says Zier in a statement. "I am delighted and honored to be joined with Steve again as we start our new company, Red Zebra Broadcasting, and take on the play-by-play rights for the Washington Redskins." Red Zebra, formed in January, has already acquired three radio stations in the Washington market for a reported $33 million. Before being hired by Snyder, Zier was regional vice president for Clear Channel Communications.
