Do you think we are keeping cap space for the big 2 FAs next year?

I am not so sure that the Skins are looking to find another OG. I think they should and will use their remaining cap space to sign Jansen and Davis. I think that would be better use of cap than signing some okay guard. Besides, I don't think LG is a make or break position. SOS is going to be around for a while and those are two building blocks. Or is this just wishful thinking on my part?

We should definitely re-sign Jansen and keep Davis.

Our cap situation should improve next year (depending on what happens with Davis) because we will have Deion's big bonus off the books. Even if we cut Smith and Darrell retires, their cap hits will not be too big (and personally, I sort of hope both are back in 2003).

If we can afford a guard next year, though, we should get one. We can't keep cost-cutting at guard. As excited as I am to see our linebacking trio this year, if Trotter and Armstead came at the cost of signing a good guard and a good DT, it wasn't worth it.

Jannsen MUST be signed ASAP. The bookends are arguably more crucial to the long term succes of this team than any offensive player on the roster other than Ramsey.

Davis and his agent OTOH may have decided that he will wait it out, see how Spurrier uses him during the REAL season, then decide whether becoming a free agent or resigning with the Skins is in his best interest. To be brutally honest and objective I can't really blame him.

Davis wouldn't be a free agent... he's still under contract with the Skins for 5 more years... the problem would be his cap hit next season which is just over $11M... that's too large for ANY team to carry... so therefore, he either gets released or he gets re-signed with a more cap-friendly contract...

as far as Jansen, i agree... sign him and sign him NOW...

One thing to bear in mind is that I believe Arrington and Samuels' salaries balloon next year due to escalator clauses.

Could Bruce Smith come back in '03? Only if he takes a huge paycut (ie vet min) to stay on as a part time 3rd down specialist.

He'll be cut after June to move his cap hit to '04. And if LaDairis Jackson becomes our Gbaja-Biamila this year, a lot of us will be wishing we'd cut Smith and kept Coleman.

I guess the majority opinion is that we need to resign Jansen and Davis. So be the GM, what would you resign both of them for?

I would make Davis, if not the best paid running back, the second to best paid running back. some deal like Faulks. Davis has been rock solid through some pretty lean years. I would also open up Danny's wallet to pay Jansen. If we pay Deion so much to come here, then I would pay these guys anything to stay. i would make Jansen the highest paid RT for the max amount of years possible.

I'd love to resign Jansen tomorrow if I could...but there are limits to how much I throw at ROT. Someone suggested the Strahan deal would serve as a barometer, but I'm not sure I see how. I don't pay a RT as much as (arguably) the most valuable defensive lineman in the league.

Davis, because of his number of years in the league and the fact that we have an entirely new offensive scheme, is in a different situation. I think we'd be making a mistake to renegotiate until we have some sense that he can operate in this offense. If he can't, then it becomes a question for Daniel Snyder. Does he fire the coach or cut the RB? I think we know the answer.

Personally, I think this is Davis' last year as a Skin.

It could be Davis' last year as a skin, but if Spurrier is an offensive genius (and we know he is), then I think he will be able to find a place for SD.

How does he not fit into SOS offense? He can bust it for a long one, get the tough yardage, and when he was playing FB he was a pretty good reciever, if I remember correctly. What is the knock on SD in SOS's offense? I think SD will become more of a back in this offense, kind of like Faulk, running, catching, and scoring.
