Mickalino Posted July 31, 2001 Share Posted July 31, 2001 Agent Joel Segal reiterated Monday evening that serious issues remain in the negotiations with the Redskins for first-round draft choice and former Clemson wide receiver Rod Gardner. The sticking point remains Washington's reluctance to include incentives in the contract. Segal stopped just short of conceding the two sides are at an impasse, but allowed that "things are not going well right now." Incentives is the problem ? I thought incentives, as opposed to large bonuses, was a concept that the team pushes, rather than the player, and the Skins are lacking in it ? Escallator clauses in the 4th and 5th years of the contract are what's hanging up Gardner from signing. Aparently there were other contracts in the first round that threw out some outrageous escallator clauses and Gardner's agent/reps want them as well. They know that if they both stand tough and all the sudden a player says "My agent can't get anything done for anyone" and either accepts less or drops the agent. I am kinda pissed about Smoot and Gardner but with the signings yesterday, I feel alittle better. I've got this awful feeling that Carters year off did a lot and being a backup for a year will help also. The Poston brothers are going start forcing teams to black ball whomever they represent if holdouts continue like this.
