Playoffs...exactly how do they work?

Can someone give me a detailed explanation of how playoffs go? I mean like, as far as how they determine who gets home-field advantage, which teams actually MAKE the playoffs(do they just look at the conference as a whole or each division individually), how wild-cards work, etc...It would be much appreciated. Thank you ahead of time.

The teams wit the best record in each division all advance. The 2 division winners with the best record get a 1st round bye. The 2 division winners with the inferior records each host the 2 wild card teams. The wild card teams are determined by which teams have the best records of all remaining non-division winners.

There are several tie breakers that can and usually will come into affect.

In each conference there are 4 division winners and 2 wild cards.

In general:

Teams in each conference are seeded 1 through 6 based on record. Division winners are guaranteed seeds 1 through 4 even if the wild card has a better record.

Top two seeds get a bye.

The team with the highest seed gets home field against the team with the lower seed

Divison champion tie breakers are 1. head-to-head; 2. division record; 3. record in common games 4. Conference Record

Wild Card tie breakers are 1. head-to-head; 2. conference record; 3. common games

Another reason why division games are so important....

If there is a tie for the wild card, the 4 teams get minimized down be DIVISION first.

So, if there's a 4 way tie between us, Dallas, Atlanta, & Tampa Bay, what Dallas did against Tampa or Atlanta would not matter, if they lost the tiebreaker to us.
