Wizards reach deal with first-rounder Jeffries

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Wizards signed first-round draft pick Jared Jeffries on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-11, 215-pound Jeffries was the 11th overall pick in last month's draft.

As part of the NBA collective bargaining agreement, he signed a three-year contract worth between $4.1 and $5 million with an option for a fourth year. If the option is exercised, Jeffries can be paid slightly more than $2 million.

Jeffries left Indiana after his sophomore season when he led the Hoosiers to the national championship game. He averaged 15.0 points and 7.6 rebounds last season and was selected the Big Ten's MVP and a second-team All-America by The Associated Press.

Jeffries, who is expected to play small forward, will be in uniform Thursday when the Wizards begin rookie camp.

''We are very excited to have Jared be a part of the Wizards,'' Washington general manager Wes Unseld said in a statement. ''He is a quality player that will bring a lot to our team as our young nucleus matures.''

Maryland guard Juan Dixon, Washington's second first-round pick and the 17th overall, is expected to agree to terms by time camp begins.

I wish football would adopt those slotting rules so there wouldn't be hold-outs. You're right...the NBA got it right on that one.

I'd really love to see the Bullets rise from their current misery. All we need is a young Wes Unseld and a young Elvin Hayes. Man, those guys were money for a long, long time.

We have the potential for a very nice formidable squad if we show patience.

A Big athletic team at that.

Kwame 6'11 and growing

Haywood 7'0 with a frame that can add muscle

Jared 6'11 he may start out as a small forward but I keep hearing by his 3rd year he could be able to play center so we could have to inside outside guys in Kwame and Jared and with Brendan would give us a triple towers frontcourt that could create major matchup problems.
