SEASON OUTLOOK

In comparison to recent offseasons, which were filled with major free-agent signings, the past few months have been relatively quiet for the Redskins. But that doesn't mean the team won't have some new wrinkles in its goal of reaching the playoffs for the first time since 1999.

Patrick Ramsey, in his fourth season, will enter camp as the starting quarterback after replacing Mark Brunell at midseason last year. But he'll still have Brunell and rookie Jason Campbell waiting in the wings should he slip. Running back Clinton Portis, who averaged 3.8 yards per carry last year after averaging 5.5 yards his first two seasons, should benefit from Joe Gibbs' plan to spread the field and the receiving corps has been revamped.

The Redskins defense was tops in the NFC last year, but the unit will have to overcome the losses of cornerback Fred Smoot and linebacker Antonio Pierce. Playmaking safety Sean Taylor, who is facing gun charges and was excused from offseason workouts, will be allowed to attend training camp but has a trial date set for Sept. 12.

CAMP QUANDARIES

Receivers are new, but improved?

Laveranues Coles and Rod Gardner were the top two receivers for Washington last year, but Coles was traded to the Jets and Gardner is expected to be released. Enter Santana Moss, acquired in the Coles trade, and free-agent signee David Patten to take over as starters. They will need to get comfortable with quarterback Patrick Ramsey quickly.

Will Carlos Rogers be ready?

The Redskins lost cornerback Fred Smoot in free agency and drafted Carlos Rogers in the first round to fill the hole. But Rogers suffered a first-degree sprain and bone bruise in his ankle in June and will likely be limited at the start of training camp.

Is LaVar Arrington healthy?

Pro Bowl linebacker LaVar Arrington missed all but four games last year with a knee injury. He had surgery on the knee in April and didn't participate in the Redskins' offseason workouts. His return is key for a defense that lost leading tackler Antonio Pierce in free agency.

I dont know if I would say that LaVars return is key. We have some pretty good talent at LB. :2cents:

understand your point, but if Lavar returns to the playmaker form he once was, then to me, yes his return is key. It will also help our new MLB fill the spot better, with two pro-bowlers on the outside.
