I see your point here and totally understand it, but I think this fan base is WAY past letting Dan march back in and allow him Napoleon everything back up again. For better or worse, events have come to a head to remove this asshat from public view for the last 5 months and for the near future. And to SIP's point, you NEVER get 95% of people on the same page to agree on anything. The fact that 9 out of 10 people do agree that Dan IS THE problem, leads me to believe that it's RR who will need to hold the line and Dan who will need to compromise. Especially when we are winning.

Like many here, I've been a Skins fan all my life. I was born in DC in 1967 and have a long family tradition of Redskins history. Hell, my grandma 'Dolly' dated some of the 1938 Redskins when they moved from Boston. I have a team picture that they signed all their names and a few signed to Dolly. But I will walk-the-EF-away from this team in a heartbeat if Snyder screws over Ron Rivera and what He's building here. I will walk away and go to the first team that Rivera ends up at. Unless it's Philly, then I will just quit football.

I agree with you as well, except I don't think this fan base has any impact on whether Snyder keeps the team or not. We don't have any say-so in the matter. Snyder also likely doesn't even care what the fans think of him...after all, he has his NFL team and his mansion and his yacht, so as far as he's concerned we can all pound sand. If he does come back and try to "Napoleon" everything, what can we truly do about it, other than boycott the team? Snyder is making tons of $$$ even if the stadium is completely empty, so there's no pressure for him to change.

As far as winning, yes it does seem unlikely that Snyder would meddle if things are going well. He may be a complete tool, but he's not that stupid. But watch out if this team tanks or suffers a major injury next year...I wouldn't put it past him to insert himself into the operations again.

Here's another thought I just had...if Snyder is absolved of all wrongdoing by the NFL report (which I fully expect), it's possible he will get revenge on everyone by becoming even MORE of a tool around WFT Park. Unfortunately that's how many toxic people react whenever they're let off the hook.

Yeah I think Rivera and Jason Wright are both the perfect fit here.  They are both competent and also classy.  It's exactly what the doctor ordered.  Dan seems to always have a fallback option is the building to cater to his worst impulses.  Even Laconfora who is cynical as heck about this team acceded that what might be different now is that Dan doesn't have "his guy" in that building to feed off of.  So Dan being infused with people around him with class and professionalism maybe might bring out his best or at least minimize his worst impulses.  Will see.

So maybe this time it changes?  Also Dan is at rock bottom now.  This is like the overweight dude who finally had the big heart attack after several scares.  Would I bet on it?  No.  But its possible.  If this drill fails, I think nothing else will work.  To me this is the last shot to see if Dan can be patient with an approach without getting in their way.    If this version bombs, its tough for me to see how Dan could sell the next beacon of hope without losing more fans.

One of the reasons why I support Rivera loading up the building with his people is it seems like its necessary to keep Dan's worst instincts at bay.  Otherwise Dan historically will find that guy in the building who will see things "his way".  That dude whomever it is will likely just try to survive the jungle like any employee typically does by agreeing with their boss.

Some forget but Bruce was pushed here with Shanny's blessing.   From what I've heard (in podcasts) part of the reason why the Shannys supposedly don't care for Bruce is they felt he betrayed them.   But really all Bruce was doing with placing his bets on the employer who will keep him employed -- that wasn't Shanny but Dan.  It is normal office survival behavior.  So lets say Dan hires the GM versus Rivera.  What are the odds that the GM ends up co-opted by Dan?  Based on history, I think its pretty good that it goes down.  I'd rather the GM feel indebted to Rivera not Dan.   In other words, I think here the Marty/John Schneider model might be the best one.  I am not saying its normally the best one.  But we got an abornmal situation IMO so sometimes in those cases you tailor your approach around that abnormality versus just ignoring it and hoping for the best.

I agree that Rivera and Wright come off like dudes who won't put up with BS.  Will see.

The problem is that Dan will eventually create another "his guy" to replace the last "his guy" he fired. Because he needs that. That's his nature, to reward people who suck up to him and tell him what he wants to hear, and not what he needs to hear. This is the nature of sycophancy in a toxic work environment. The newbies will see that the suck-ups get rewarded with perks (company car, $$$ bonus, bigger office, a suite at FedEx, copies of that cheerleader DVD, etc.) and will mimic that behavior accordingly in order to get ahead, which just perpetuates the whole toxic cycle and helps to explain why nothing ever changes...until the big guy in charge is somehow run out the door. Look at the history of toxic organizations (Enron is just one example) and you will see how hard this dynamic is to change without the person in charge being replaced.

The people who don't become sycophants get treated like Brian La Femina and shown the door.

And I get why people would say Dan would HAVE to know he's at rock bottom and make adjustments. That would be true if Dan were a normal, rational person like everyone on this board (well, except me...) and have a true epiphany like Ebenezer Scrooge on Christmas morning. But I'm not counting on that either. The reason Scrooge remains a popular character is because we realize how rare a person like that truly is, as most people like Snyder go to their graves muttering about how every single person they met betrayed them or let them down somehow...they're not capable of looking in the mirror and realizing that they are the problem.

I also agree that Snyder's recent hires seem to be geared towards deflecting attention away from himself. I'm sure once this is over the NFL report clears him of any wrongdoing, Snyder will eventually shift back to his old ways without even realizing it. Right now it's looking like Jason Wright will eventually compromise his values...not that there's any indication of that right now, but he'll want to stay in Snyder's favor and probably won't even notice that Snyder's behaviors are regressing. What's he going to do, tell his boss to stop acting a certain way? Jason Wright will be back on LinkedIn looking for work. My prediction is Snyder will eventually butt heads with Rivera on luring Wright to the Dark Side as Bruce and Vinny's heir.

  3. I said it before: the NFL is going to regret approving Snyder's 100% takeover of the team. Shouldn't they have seen this coming? Isn't this a pretty big red flag that Snyder is now turning on the lawyer he himself hired???

Maybe the Sports Junkies will be vindicated after all...

The Washington Football Team and attorney Beth Wilkinson are at odds over Wilkinson wanting to unveil details in a past sexual harassment lawsuit filed against the team, according to Pro Football Talk and Law360.com.

Wilkinson — who was hired by team owner Dan Snyder to investigate the team's culture — reportedly wants to unveil previously confidential information from a past sexual harassment lawsuit, according to Law360.com. Wilkinson is trying to move up a hearing on the subject. The team believes Wilkinson is doing that to leak damaging information about the team.

Wilkinson said she is trying to move up the hearing because she has another trial set for June 2, the day the Washington hearing was originally supposed to take place. Wilkinson also believes the confidential information in the lawsuit will be helpful for her investigation, and that the fight over making the information public has dragged on too long.

The Washington Football Team believes Wilkinson's attorney threatened to leak sensitive information about the team in an email. In that email, Wilkinson's attorney says "any hearing on this [issue] could be a disaster for” the team." Wilkinson explained the email was not meant as a threat, and that if the Team continues to fight the issue, the court is going to look harder for additional material that should be unredacted.

It's believed Wilkinson wants information from a 2009 sexual harassment lawsuit in which the Team allegedly paid $1.6 million to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit against Snyder, according to the Washington Post.

NFL will let Beth Wilkinson run investigation

The NFL drew criticism last August after it said it wouldn't hire an independent investigator to look into Washington's alleged misconduct. Instead, the league said it would rely on Wilkinson's investigation into the situation.

Given that Wilkinson is being paid by Snyder, some wondered whether the NFL not hiring an additional investigator was a good idea. While Wilkinson's full report hasn't been filed yet, her fight to get that 2009 lawsuit unredacted indicates she's not going to go easy on the Team despite being hired by Snyder.

  4. So much for my high opinion of Alex Smith. He kinda struck me as a 'dim bulb' and his latest comments confirm that assessment. I don't mean 'dim' as in intellectually or athletically stupid, I mean in terms of emotional intelligence. Considering that he was in a coma, almost died from infection, and almost lost his leg, it's stunning he would be incapable of understanding why the team would be careful with him, especially with a new coaching regime. Would he have preferred the opposite, where they made him run 'Oklahoma drills' or act as a tackling dummy as soon as he came back to the team??

I understand he had more 'faith' in his healing abilities than the team, or even his own doctors. Good for him. 99% of rational people, however, would not have predicted his eventual comeback, and they shouldn't be disrespected by him just because he proved them wrong. This isn't a case of an over-hyped athlete who gets cut from a team (ex. Antonio Brown) and then complaining that the team that cut him "is gonna miss me." Is Smith blind to his own sub-par play when he came back?? Does he or his father ever watch his game film???

But it could have been worse...can you imagine Larry Michael coming up to him and saying "Hey Alex, since you're unable to walk well maybe you can help me edit some of these cheerleader videos in your spare time." Now THAT would have been interesting!

  5. Here we go...looks like my username turned out to be quite prophetic!! Never heard of any NFL owner having to drag his former GM into court over defamation...

Daniel Snyder seeks to question Bruce Allen under oath, in connection with ongoing defamation lawsuit

    https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2021/04/15/daniel-snyder-seeks-to-question-bruce-allen-under-oath-in-connection-with-ongoing-defamation-lawsuit/

Although all matters between Washington Football Team owner Daniel Snyder and his former limited partners have been resolved, Snyder continues to pursue a defamation claim against a website that tried to tie him to the late Jeffrey Epstein. According to Daniel Kaplan of TheAthletic.com, Snyder’s latest effort targets former team president Bruce Allen.

Per Kaplan, Snyder wants to question Allen under oath, and also to secure documents in his possession, custody, or control that could be relevant to the pending litigation in India (not Indiana, India) against Meaww.com.

“[Snyder] has a good faith belief that [Allen] has specific knowledge of the creation and distribution of the MEAWW articles, and thus has information relevant to the Indian Action,” Snyder’s lawyers wrote in court papers. “The motion is not a lawsuit, but a request to the court to compel discovery to aid a foreign case, what is known as a 1782 motion.”

The effort to gather information from Allen arises from an allegation that, during the period of January 9, 2020 through November 18, 2020, Allen participated in 87 separate phone calls totaling 1,237 minutes with John Moag. An investment banker, Moag was working for the three minority owners who were trying to sell their interest in the franchise. (Moag has denied knowledge of the articles posted on Meaww.com.)

Regardless of whether they talked about the article that serves as the basis for the lawsuit, the number and duration of the conversations sparks curiosity regarding the subject(s) of their discussions. Was Allen helping Moag find buyers? Was Allen hoping that the minority partners would find a way to take over the team and re-install Allen in an executive role?

Snyder fired Allen after the 2019 season. Presumably, Allen already has been interviewed as part of the investigation conducted by the league regarding claims of workplace misconduct. He quite possibly has a much different attitude about Snyder now, given that Snyder plans to gather information with the potential goal of suing Allen directly.

Any litigation against Allen wouldn’t necessarily relate to the defamatory articles posted on Meaww.com. If, under the guise of exploring that connection, Snyder learns that Allen committed unrelated violations of actual or alleged duties to Snyder or the team, that could be the basis for one or more legal claims.

Regardless, Snyder’s quest for justice has now led to a fight with the man who ran the franchise for years. Jason Wright, take heed.

Damn, as much grief as I've given the Moron that is Snyder, that evil **** has played this so well from the beginning. And what can you say about it? It's great that people like this are getting these opportunities, that seemingly good people like Jason Wright and Julie Donaldson have their roles and seem to be doing good things and creating positive buzz around the team internally ... but damn if this isn't the most transparent case I've ever seen of someone trying to cover up their own guilt and disgusting past. He must've been truly scared this time that his ownership was in serious jeopardy. Welcome, Natalie, but I don't believe Damn Spyder has changed a bit through all of this. It just sickens me that we're stuck with this POS.

Wouldn't surprise me if the NFL was behind this move. Didn't it come out later that the La Femina hire was forced on the Skins, only for Danny Boy to screw it up and fire the guy after a few months?

While I think diversity is an admirable goal, the fact that all of these hires have only happened since Snyder got in trouble smells like the hands of Goodell. Why is the NFL so eager to bend over backwards to help Snyder in the first place??

Wonder if the NFL will get involved after Danny Boy fires some of these folks? Which he eventually will, once everything dies down...and it sounds like it will, as no one in the media seems interested in interviewing the former minority owners or people that were hurt by Snyder's boorishness. Oh, and all the cheerleaders lost their jobs...

  7. One silver lining to this very dark cloud would be that since now Snyder owns 100% of the team, he is now also 100% responsible for everything that happens from here on out.

Have to wonder, though: what if there are other allegations, with actual proof, of even worse behavior that haven't been brought to light yet? The NFL would look even worse than it does now, which isn't very good considering that all of the cheerleaders lost their jobs and the man responsible for the toxic environment that enabled their abuse was rewarded with even more control of the team by the owners' puppet Goodell. The only person who paid any price at all was Larry Michael, and all he lost was his job. The cheerleader DVD seems to have been forgotten about.

It's clear the NFL didn't seriously consider the sexist environment a major problem, or they would have acted more decisively. But they will look worse if there are more allegations coming that they weren't aware of. The NFL better hope it did its due diligence...

And where is the follow up? Snyder's goons tried to intimidate Moag and people who worked for the team. Schar and the other guy were DESPERATE to sell their shares...does anyone believe that it was only because Snyder missed a payment to them? All of this seems to have been swept under the rug, even by the media, who clearly isn't following up on any of this.

    • Thanks 1
  8. Some thoughts on this...

    1. What's to keep Snyder from changing the name back to Redskins? (a dumb question, but thought I'd ask...)

    2. Does this 'deal' mean the lawsuits are closed, meaning no one cares any more than Snyder sent goons to intimidate Moag and some of the team's employees? What about the lawsuit in India? The phone of McCloughan's wife? Has anyone ever explained why Schar and the others wanted to sell their shares so desperately that they helped expose the toxic, sexist environment at WFT Park? Does any of this matter to the NFL?

    3. What if FedEx and other sponsors threatened to pull out unless Snyder sells the team?

  9. 2 hours ago, Skinsinparadise said:

I would guess there are a handful or so of Dan supporters left.  There was a real active pro Dan guy who used to post a ton, last run I recall from him was selling the idea that Dan pushed the Haskins pick was completely false.  Back when the pick happened.  That point didn't age too well for him.

It's hard for me to fathom how anyone can be worse than Dan.  Dan is considered by some the worst owner in sports or at least neck and neck with James Nolan.  It would be IMO very hard to randomly get someone that bad.

Speaking for myself, I can deal with incompetence better if it came with class.  But this franchise has suffered from being both considered incompetent and lacking class.  I became a fan in the 80s when this franchise was known for the opposite.  It's sad what this dude has done to a flagship franchise

    Dan's tenure:

if recall one of the 5-6 worst records in the NFL

one of the only teams not to reach the NFC championship

only team not to win more than 10 games

    just 2 playoff wins

The team has been a NFL punchline for much of his tenure

It's moved from being a flagship team to one that's often considered irrelevant.  We can't even get Sunday Night Football games anymore because no one cares to watch them.

Gone from the team with having one of the best attendance in the NFL to half empty stadiums, invaded by the opponents

Considered having one of the worst faclilties in the league

Embarassing stories about suing old ladies, suing newspapers, the cheerleader stories, the current sexual harassment stories.

The stories of Dan's interference on moves that have backfired

The stories about the culture being rotten there and driven by fear and Dan's impatence

How much worse can it get?  Bezos is known to be a bit of a jerk to work for like Dan is but he's not really seen as slimy or incompetent.    Dan seems to run the other businesses he's attempted into the ground as well.  I think he hit lightening in the bottle in the early 90s with a telemarketing business but its been a downward spiral for him since:  980?  Six Flags?  Johnny Rocket.  Dan certainly doesn't have the Midas Touch.   Bezos is considered one of the most successful businessmen in the world.   Dan on the other hand according to some is a laughingstock among his own NFL owner peer group.

Sure he does...the Reverse Midas Touch. In fact, the Hollies wrote a song called just that back in the 60s. Did they have a time machine so they could witness the disaster of Snyder's ownership?

I'm not the guy to run with
'Cause I'll throw you off the line
I'll break you and destroy you
    Given time

He's King Midas with a curse
    He's King Midas in reverse
He's King Midas with a curse
    He's King Midas in reverse

It's plain to see it's hopeless
Going on the way we are
So even though I'd lose you
You'd be better off by far

He's not the man to hold your trust
Everything he touches turns to dust
    In his hands
Nothing he can do is right
He'd even like to sleep at night
    But he can't

Let's not forget that the company Snyder made his billions with, Snyder Communications, was later shut down for fraud I believe. There's a thread here:

    https://es.redskins.com/topic/329705-the-phone-slamming-king-how-snyder-communications-made-dan-snyder-rich-1997-1999-rich-enough-to-buy-the-washington-redskins/

  11. Owners have been forced to sell their teams for less than what Snyder is accused of. The cheerleader scandal is bad enough, but his attempts to subvert the investigation and intimidate his employees into not cooperating with Wilkinson is beyond the pale...but really shouldn't be surprising, considering that we're talking about Dan Snyder here.

Gotta love how the NFL hemmed its answer...they only admitted to having not RECEIVED any such report saying all of this about Snyder. Which means in reality that it's sitting in Goodell's inbox and he just hasn't read it yet. If the NFL wants to stick to its response, however, they better be able to back it up with proof. It's clear the report was leaked to the Junkies because they feared (rightly) that the NFL would just cover it up.

Have fun on your IMAX yacht, Boat Boy.

I’ve been a Dan Snyder critic as much as anyone over the years, but this idea of utilizing the court of public opinion to force the man to lose his business really does not sit well with me.

Very un-American.  For me the end never justifies the means.  If it’s bad enough to get a conviction in a court of law on something...that’s different.  If it’s mountains out of ant hills to exact a desired outcome...not good.

Maybe not, but the ends do justify the meanness. And I agree with TD_washingtonredskins that no one should feel ever sorry for a billionaire. As much as I support capitalism, we all know that billionaires will never suffer from any of the troubles of us 'little people.'

  14. Hoo boy, this gets worse...I think we know why Snyder hired him in the first place!!

    https://www.si.com/nfl/2020/07/08/washington-foundation-abandoned-mission

“He would not be the kind of person that I would pick to run a foundation that is supposed to be structured to help the Indigenous people,” Wooten says. “The people you want running the foundation, you want them to be the kind of people that you know understand and, more than anything else, are committed to lifting the people up. … Gary Edwards would not be my guy.”

Edwards brought two assets to WROAF that might have appealed to Snyder. One was that, on the surface, he appeared to have credibility. The other: He has said in private conversations, according to three people who have been part of them, that he is comfortable being called “redskin.”...

In a precursor to his work with Washington, NNALEA colleagues say Edwards arranged for the Indian Motorcycle brand to sponsor a NNALEA reception at a National Congress of American Indians conference. Indian Motorcycles has a controversial Native American in a headdress as its logo; some attendees were appalled to see one of the motorcycles poolside at the reception.

  15. This Edwards guy wasn't exactly a good catch when they hired him...

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2014/03/27/washington-redskins-orginal-americans-gary-edwards-inspector-general/6983217/

Edwards is CEO of the National Native American Law Enforcement Association (NNALEA), a nonprofit whose contract with the Bureau of Indian Affairs was scrutinized in a report by the federal Office of Inspector General. The May 2012 report said that the NNALEA took advantage of the government in a contract that called for the NNALEA to help recruit "critically needed" law enforcement officers to work in Indian Country...

The report does not mention Edwards by name, but instead refers to him as NNALEA's CEO.

"NNALEA's CEO stated that he would focus his recruitment efforts in Indian Country," the report stated. "We found that recruitment in Indian Country was ineffective, with only 22 of 514 applicants (or about 4 percent) having Indian preference."...

Oneida Indian Nation representative Ray Halbritter criticized the hiring of Edwards.

"This is part of a disturbing – but sadly not surprising – pattern of behavior," Halbritter told USA TODAY Sports. "First Mr. Snyder insisted that a dictionary-defined racial slur is a way to honor Native Americans… and now he has hired a person who has financially harmed Native Americans to run a foundation to defend his team's name. These aren't accidents – this is a systemic campaign to denigrate Native Americans, orchestrated by a team owner who will stop at nothing to keep the team's name."...

Are any other teams not represented at all? I guess Chargers and Colts? That's so damning considering at some point the Redskins probably would have populated Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, and North Carolina. I give them a pass for NC as I'm guessing the Panthers would have taken over that state no matter who owned the Skins.

Well, the WFT was the team of the south from 1937 until 1960 when the Cowboys arrived...which owner George Preston Marshall vociferously protested. Heck, even the song used to have the lyrics "fight for old Dixie" instead of "fight for old DC."

Seems ironic that a team from the capital of the Union that ended slavery would be foisted upon a resentful South (I'm from the South so I can say that) 😆 during the Great Depression. But I don't think irony was a concept that GPM understood or appreciated.

Allen may not have been so bad. He went to the USFL and had 2 playoff berths and one championship game berth in two seasons, going 24-16 during that 83-84 span. But the fact that the Rams fired him in the PRESEASON was not a good indicator...

Oh, one more thing.   We need this to be resolved by the end of the year.  We can't have this hanging over our heads going into 2021.

Don't count on it. If Snyder really cared about doing the right thing (which he clearly doesn't), he would have worked to change the culture years ago. He would have stopped meddling in football decisions. He would have made the workplace less toxic. He would hire competent people and let them do their jobs. He would refrain from suing little old ladies who can no longer afford their season tickets. He would have started the name change process years ago so we wouldn't be rooting for a team with blank helmets this year.

But he didn't do any of those things because he doesn't care...until it's too late, and he tries to make himself look good with his recent hirings. He would do what's best for 'WFTE1932 football' and sell the team.

But he won't, they will have to drag him kicking and screaming, spilling his Crown Royal and dropping his $300 Cuban cigar while his fingernails leave claw marks on his baby chair as they drag him away.
