Assuming high-quality coordinators and position coaches are hired (yes, I know what happens when you assume...), I see two models:
-
Nobody in the brain trust likes the QB options available at the top of the draft, and they trade back to acquire more picks. The plethora of picks plus intelligently selected free agents results in an immediate upgrade into the lower levels of the playoff discussion. The offense is going to be dull next season. Success under this model depends entirely on the Commanders finding their own Brock Purdy very soon. Beyond next season, this either stays at 7-9 wins or turns into the 49ers situation.
- Wonderboy QB is drafted, and the immediate future is a bumpy ride--a 7-to-9 win season would be predicated on Quinn and Peters having an immediate impact elsewhere in the roster. The longer term future is either disastrous if they get the next Zach Wilson, or wondrous if they get the next CJ Stroud. Probably not much in between.
I can't predict beyond that. Too many variables.

It's pretty impressive that Whitt chose to follow Quinn to our little sandbox rather than take over one of the more talented defensive rosters around.
On the other hand, Jerry is in "win before I die" mode and maybe thinks that Rivera or some other veteran coach is the guy to get him there.

Keim's local and people treat his word as gospel. I'm not saying this guy is Keim - I'd never heard of him prior to seeing that tweet - but sometimes stories are covered locally that don't break nationally for prob a variety of reasons.
In any case, moving on from that whole situation and focused on DQ and his staff! Seems like Whitt is good hire and hoping for Kubiak after the SB at OC.
Keim is with ESPN. The opposite of local, even though the Commanders are his beat.

If Rivera ends up in Dallas, could JDR be far behind?

Indeed I would argue that its only in recent years that this has periodically not been true because of the changes which made it so much more difficult for defenses to be effective or truly great in general.
Your point is still true. One of the teams in the SB is a defensive juggernaut and the other got there because the defense radically improved and carried them much of the season while their offense struggled. Both can and do play nasty slugfests when needed.
People have been predicting that the era of "video game football" featuring 45-40 shootouts was finally upon us, and every year the playoffs come down to defense and the ability to run the ball. Sure, offenses are more high-powered in the playoffs now compared to 50 years ago, but defense and power football in the playoffs still set the best teams apart.

It'd be helpful if there were some links in that tweet to support that.

I hope Quinn is allowed to chose his staff.
I imagine that Quinn wouldn't be the new HC if there'd been disagreements during his interviews over the coaching staff hires.

This would be good. too bad they won't give him personnel control though?
Going from three years of working for Dan Snyder to working for Jerry Jones. I guess you'd have to say that Rivera has a thing for a difficult work environment.

Y'know, maybe that's for the best. Looking for the "savior coach" seems like a road to palookaville. This isn't college FB.

This is 98% about roster construction, and Quinn isn't the final or sole voice on that.
Belichick isn't in the HOF without Brady. Kid Shanahan isn't in the SB next week with Trey Lance or Jimmy G. Reid is still the "lovable loser" he was in Philly without Mahomes. And it's not just QBs, either. Dungy and Payton probably have several more rings if the rest of the Colts' roster had been better.
There are just too many moving parts involved to say that Quinn is "another Rivera" or that we'll get a repeat of what happened in Atlanta.

I just realized, now we're going to have say good things about Dan. I don't know if I can. Dan is such a revolting name. Every time I read the word "Dan", I cringe. This is going to be a lot harder than I thought.
I'm just going to say "Quinn."

Do a pulse check on the interwebs. Everyone is laughing and saying same ol Washington.
Who cares? The collective wisdom of randos on the internet (such as me) doesn't mean a darned thing. If Quinn is a guy who Adam and Josh sincerely believe can deliver the coaching needed to be a contender, that's all I need to know.

We've all been hoping for a young offensive mastermind as our new HC, so I'm not going to talk myself or anyone else into loving this pick.
That said, there's something to the idea that the current situation in Washington might not be the best to land on the shoulders of a young first-time HC. Putting together a staff, running the day-to-day, teaching positions coaches, motivating and inspired the locker room. Those are things that Quinn has done before, and done well.
His overall trajectory in Atlanta doesn't inspire confidence, but I'm going to keep an open mind. That was a different situation, and not all under his control. I don't think you can even put the collapse against Green Bay a few weeks ago all on him. Dallas has been choking in the playoffs every time they've made it since their 1995 SB win. That didn't start with Quinn.
The focus now has to be on getting the best available OC and position coaches. They're going to shoulder a higher burden than would be the case under an offensive-minded HC.
Welcome to DC, Mr. Quinn.

Everybody's freaking out despite having zero information about what the Commanders are doing right now.
I wouldn't be surprised if Adam and Josh expected this process to go differently, but they also don't seem to be rushing to settle for anyone left, so perhaps they don't see themselves as having to settle at all. We just don't know.

An interesting thing to ponder is that the Commanders are the only team this hiring cycle with both new ownership and a first-time GM.
I can't discount the possibility that, in trying to be so thorough, they underestimated the need for urgency in such a compact hiring window.

I really thought the Commanders would be one of the first to hire an HC, not the last.
Very wacky offseason.

None of us are privy to the discussions going on within the organization about this situation. I wouldn't assume they were set on Johnson or that they're set on Quinn now. We simply don't know, and neither do the radio/Twitter guys.
I'm staying calm and trusting the new team in charge.

I could be wrong, but Quinn's got the look of someone that's slowly walking the green mile, not someone elated because they just nailed an interview...

Lol I don't think anyone actually drafts QBs that way 😂
Also as good as Goff has been this season, and I think he's been underrated, I don't think there is a single team saying "please find me the next Jared Goff"
Of course not! If it were, I'd be more gainfully employed in an NFL scouting organization.
-
This "Lamar vs Goff" discussion based on Sunday's results would tend to favor us choosing Maye over Daniels, if that's the choice at hand.
Mahomes looks more and more like a unicorn. The guy who can run like no one's business but also play the traditional QB role as well as anyone ever has. He was amazing yesterday--very nearly perfect.

Respectfully, I disagree. I think they truly are giving MacDonald just as much a shot as they are Johnson and if not shame on them!
Agreed. Since they're looking for leadership more than anything else, I don't think there's any way they could assess that without in-person conversations. The people involved seem like they'd keep open minds.

In a world where NFL owners are people like Jerry Jones, Jim Irsay, and David Tepper. I don't think the "arrogant basketball guys" narrative is a problem at all. The only person who comes out looking bad from this (if it's even true) is Ben Johnson.
I'm treating all this reporting, apart from Keim and Schefter, with extreme skepticism.
