I used to get frustrated thinking about it, and sometimes I wish I had been steered towards the building trades very early on and perhaps bypassed the liberal arts education entirely, but I met my wife in college and I actually loved the academic work that the school gave me.  I was lucky to get into the school that I went to, and they really developed me and broadened my horizons.  You almost can't quantify how getting that college education impacts your quality of life.  It can be very indirect.  I have relatives who grew up in the same household but one of them got a college degree while another didn't, and the one that didn't will have all kinds of instability in their life like abusive relationships, failed marriages, substance abuse problems, poor health, etc.  But the one who got the degree will have more independence and healthier relationships and much more stability and personal health, and tend to make better choices.  So there is something going on there.  It's got some kind of silver bullet cure for a lot of problems.

One of the best reasons to go to college is that it teaches you how to speak the language of other college educated people, which has to be hard to learn on your own.  That expands your social sphere.  Plus you never know when you'll get to use an obscure education down the road.

Now I just need to hang out with some college educated people so I can speak their language.  If you really want to teach you should go for it.  It's not too late to start over, and lots of places have a "career switchers" teaching program.  I taught for 11 years (history) and enjoyed the teaching- the other stuff, not so much.

Won't somebody be more tolerant of the poor Nazis?

(And somebody probably shouldn't be quoting that picture.)

The verses from Jeremiah that are on the car begin this way:

Yet I planted you a choice vine,
        wholly of pure seed.
How then have you turned degenerate
        and become a wild vine?

Ironic that it could apply to the owner of this car.

  3. 2 things to keep in mind for minor league pay

    1) They don't get paid throughout the year, so the $1100 a month does equate to about $7500 a year when you factor in that they just get paid during the season.  This is why so many have part time jobs.

    2) They don't get paid during Spring Training.  So, for approx. 6 weeks they have no money coming in and they certainly can't have their off-season job during that time.

From an excellent article called "I can't afford to play this game" at the Athletic website.  It's a paysite,  and I don't know if anybody has a subscription, but here's the link:

    https://theathletic.com/830452/2019/03/15/i-cant-afford-to-play-this-game-minor-leaguers-open-up-about-the-realities-of-their-pay-and-its-impact-on-their-lives/

    Quote

Players are not paid during spring training. From February until late March, the only money reaching the players’ hands is for meals.

While the process varies slightly from team to team, the amount of meal money you receive is dependent upon whether you’re starting spring training in big league camp, or if you fall under the early-March minor league report dates. The teams will generally provide breakfast and lunch at the complex, leaving you on your own for dinner, which, as a minor leaguer gives you around $20-30 a day for food.

If you’re held over into extended spring training, this financial situation continues until you’re added to an active roster.

If your next stop lands in short-season, you’re looking at June for your next paycheck.

“If you stay in extended, you don’t get paid,” an AL West Low A player said. “So, I went all the way through March, April and May to mid-June with getting $20 a day.”

That would be interesting to see... Tigers for 5 years with 1 Cy Young. If we traded him this year he'd have been with the Nats for 4.5 years and 2 Cy Youngs (and likely 5x ASGs). Then he'd have 2.5 years (and maybe a World Series) with whoever we trade him to.. thinking LAD, NYY, etc, the big money contenders are most likely.

Would be really interesting to see if he would be inducted as a National if we traded him. I don't think that's a guarantee but I do think it would be most likely.

If he goes to another team and has the same amount of success, he could always pull a Greg Maddux and have his plaque with no hat.

  5. I saw Captain Marvel this weekend and I enjoyed it.  Goose did steal the show, and I liked all of the nostalgia including the music and how long it took to upload files, dammit!

I enjoyed her dry sense of humor, and I guess that's what some reviewers are referring to when they call her dull or uninspired?

It's not going to win any awards, but it's a good continuation (or prequel) of the story.

Didn't like Earth being referred to as a ****hole, but it is what it is.

It's a 100% certainty that this is the case.  The Trump and incel subreddits (lots of demographic overlap) have been brigading and trolling every reddit post discussing the movie over the past few weeks, and it's obvious they did it to the film's rottentomatoes and IMDB pages too.

I'm only surprised that they didn't do the same thing to Black Panther, but I guess they are more mysoginistic than they are racist.  I love that the MCU movies are going to be headlined by a black man, a woman, and a 16 year old kid in an interracial relationship moving forward.  I hope it runs the racist and incel trash out of Marvel fandom.

I also agree this is what's happening, but why didn't we see this when Wonder Woman came out?

I really wanna know what Mike Flynn really did that made compelled this Judge to call him out as a traitor. He did something terrible. That they dont even want to tell us about. So much so the Judge asked them to stop him if he went to far.

Well, this is an old article, and while Turkey wasn't our enemy, he was putting their interests ahead of those of the US.

    From the article:

But treason or not, Flynn’s rejection of a military operation that had been months in the making raises questions about what other key decisions he might have influenced during the slightly more than three weeks he was Trump’s national security adviser, and the months he was Trump’s primary campaign foreign-policy adviser

well, hogan's in at qb, so... did you know that the trump women actually were high-paid "escorts"? ms. eric and lara (ex-ms djr) as well as ivanka and melania, of course...while i'm at it...as long as 5-6 years ago i wrote about how Russian money was bailing out don (did not predict our current situation or don ever making it to potus) and how melania was hand-picked by putin to be his live-in handler, known or unknown to don :D...my tongue in cheek take when presenting that storyline has taken a sobering hit this last couple years :806:

Wait a second-you predicted this 5-6 years ago?!?  THAT explains your prolonged absence from the board recently.
