Last year? Absolutely. This year? I expect a top half of the league defense in about every metric at an absolute minimum. I think it’s realistic to be in the top 10-12 due to actual NFL coaches - an excellent scheme, coaches that actually coach, players that buy in and work to play as a whole unit and of course every level of our defense has gotten drastically better talent-wise with maybe the exception of CB which is a concern but I expect player improvement due to the reasons above so I am expecting average corner play at the least.

It’s a quality product that the company is not mass producing or agreeing to work with anyone. They accepted the commanders offer because of JD. The system itself is simple - the more “progress” part is the company creating and uploading our team’s offense, opponent’s defense, stadium and practice field details, etc. The coaches will have to be heavily involved, giving the company their playbook and opponent’s film/defensive playbook. I’m not sure they’re at that point yet with the install but perhaps they are sending off what they’ve installed incrementally so he can rep it. 
 

The stadium or practice field needs to be created because he wears the headset but runs the plays live on an actual field and it represents exactly where he is at on the field so he’s not running physically off the field/into the parking lot for example. 
 

@TheShredder Armani tore his Achilles, not anything with his knee. Supposedly he looks back to his athletic self, it’s been almost a year since he tore it but I know that can be a 12-14 month process if not longer for pro athletes, especially ones that need to cut and change direction without ahahuasca lol

Having said that, I recall commenting back then, that he flashes when he blitzed, he didn't blitz much but when he did he was quick and elusive.  Not really having pass rushing moves but he was good at finding a crease and taking off.

 

He was raw back then who flashed good range in open field.  His issue was his instincts-recognition skills, he was a beat slow on that front -- and it alas looks like that issue has remained a problem with him in the pros.

 

But I do think he can add to this defense if used right.  One of the things i love about Quinn is he comes off obsessed with finding these players superpowers and exploiting that versus hoping the player fits to scheme.  Ron-Del Rio did Jamin's development a diservice by starting him at Mike as a rookie and I am gathering his confidence never recovered.

 

From what i hear he's at his best when he has a MLB type directing him and that's where Wagner thrives.  

I’m not shocked, per se, by the totally negative crowd or the folks talking about cutting/trading Forbes and Davis. Admittedly I tend to generalize that crowd a bit as folks that don’t obsess with all the team-oriented podcasts and reading all the tea leaves. 
 

I get it, Forbes played very poorly overall last year. I think he was put in a bad spot (covering AJ Brown all game as an example) schematically. I also think he comes off as pretty intelligent and hard working…while that may seem counterintuitive, considering they kept talking about wanting him to do what they asked, I can imagine a world where he shut down (similar to Jahan) because he was being coached by a high school secondary coach and a poor defensive scheme. And probably just said screw it I’m going to do what made me successful in college…and that didn’t go well. 
 

As for Jamin, he clearly hasn’t played to his potential or draft status. But he has shown improvement. I also generally think our defensive scheme was essentially no plan, just let the four guys up front do whatever they thought would work on any given play, even changing their plan just before the snap and forcing the LBers to just react off of them rather than playing downhill and aggressive off the snap based on a scheme plan and fit. 
 

It is easy to see how folks can look at a simple report of Forbes returning punts or Davis taking pass rush snaps as a demotion and a sign of something negative. I just view it differently. 
 

This entire FO and coaching staff talks about finding what players do well and putting them in position to maximize that. Forbes showed great return instincts with the ball in his hands in college. It makes sense they would experiment with that. They have clearly targeted great athletes across the board and Davis may be one of the best athletes on the team. He’s best moving forward and has shown some pass rush juice so why not take advantage of that in a scheme that historically has generated pressure by moving folks around and scheming pressure rather than just asking guys to win one-on-ones?

Forbes showed in college he can be a guy similar to Diggs/Bland in Dallas. I think they would be more than happy if he occasionally gets burned a few times a game if he’s one of the top secondary guys that can generate turnovers in their scheme and I expect that. 
 

Rather than replace Jamin with Wagner and Luvu, I think they’ve surrounded him with guys that can help him develop and let him do what he does best with less responsibility and playing downhill on the outside. 
 

Certainly, if either of these guys doesn’t show this year they can take advantage of that they’re likely very expendable next year. But I think they both have the best chance at maximizing themselves in this defense, this year as they have in their careers and I don’t see any chance they’re on the block this season. DQ emphasizes the teaching ability of his staff and I’m excited to see what they can bring out of both of these guys. If it doesn’t work, fine, but give them a chance and root for them with an actual NFL quality coaching staff to see if they can get closer to the potential that made them great prospects.

Admittedly I’m bullish on the defensive staff, especially whitt and Quinn but I don’t think you can undersell what great teachers and schemers they are. While diggs in Dallas does not fit that category, they found a way to accept that he’ll frequently get torched while routinely scheming and coaching him to become a turnover machine. They turned bland into an nfl record holder. See what Whitt did in Green Bay with Sam shields and many others. 
 

We have three guys (Forbes, Davis and Mathis) who have underperformed so far and I have to believe they’ll get at least one of them to reach their potential (I’m betting Forbes, not much faith in Mathis). This is to say nothing about what Wagner and Luvu can help bring out of Davis and/or Magee. 
 

It also is to say nothing about what their coaching and schemes can do to elevate the already good players on the roster. 
 

Quinn and Peters have also emphasized that they look for violent and explosive players and that everyone they bring in they have a role in mind and an idea of how to maximize what they do well. So far they have done exactly that and I have to believe they will put these guys in a position to elevate their games - it’s encouraging to see they love Martin and brought Forbes in at Dallas - Forbes buying in will be key to him improving. 
 

Ultimately, Quinn and Whitt have gotten every defense they’ve coached to be some of the better, if not best units in the league in terms of generating turnovers. Even if the defense isn’t top 10 in yards allowed, I expect it to be high in sacks and turnovers with the players they have. Giving more opportunities to Jayden and the offense while physically beating teams up is a recipe for us to be competitive and a fun to team to watch this year. We may only win 7-8 games and miss the playoffs but I will be shocked if we aren’t an enjoyable to watch, well coached team that plays a physical brand of football this year.

Do you doubt this is going to happen? So far this entire organization has done exactly what it said it would. Not rushing and trusting their process - they’ve done that throughout. Said they wanted to be explosive and violent - drafted and signed players that fit that exact mold. Said they wanted to gain advantages on the edges and have followed through in spending and signing coaches, staff and upgrades that do just that. Etc. 

I have zero doubt they will emphasize both quality and quantity in the scouting department and Harris et al will not hesitate to open the checkbook to ensure we get the best and have an advantage in that department. Hell, we gave out not one but two of the biggest UDFA contracts in the league to make sure we got guys that may not even make the team. I have zero concern about a couple scout folks leaving considering they were probably told they weren’t in the plans here anyway.

Him (healthy of course) or donovan Smith would go a long way to easing my fears.

I’m hoping Bakhtiari, Humphries and Smith are all on their radar. Not for the whole season. But if Coleman needs more seasoning. I like Lucas, but I don’t know if his body or play hold up for a whole season. Same goes for the first two above. But if Lucas gives us 6+ games and is wearing down or hurt and Coleman isn’t super ready, getting another handful of games from Bakhtiari or Humphries could be beneficial. 
 

Smith is a guy that could fill in for more the entirety of the year but I’m not sure his play is much better than Lucas or the benefit of Coleman getting reps this year. Same honestly goes for the guys above too. 
 

I don’t have a whole lot of faith in competent play for the duration of the year from Lucas and Wylie but it does give me some hope that we won’t throw 70% of the time and will help more with protections, chips and the short game. But I’m hoping some of the above don’t get scooped up anytime soon in case we have injuries in camp or if Coleman shows he really can’t handle tackle. 
 

But right now I’m cautiously optimistic about Coleman playing tackle. And that we have a fairly strong interior that should afford our tackles more an opportunity to just run rushers by the outside. I actually really like our interior depth as well. But tackle depth is a serious concern so I wouldn’t mind having another veteran even if they can only be counted on for a handful of games. 

Last year was awful for Forbes until late in the year when he became at least serviceable. Given that from guys like Keim reporting and some interviews I think he’s a smart and hardworking kid. A lot of the blame I place on the staff but he deserves blame too. Him being a film studier and worker leads me to believe he cared so little for the coaching that he didn’t buy in or work the way he should have in his rookie year. 
 

I believe VERY strongly in Quinn and Witt’s track record with high picks and undrafted guys - they’ve gotten the best out of people, especially in the secondary. I believe they will here and so I’m optimistic Forbes will put in the work too. The scheme and coaching, imo, will be exception on that side of the ball but Forbes will have to put in the work. If he doesn’t improve drastically this year then I will conclude he’s not putting in the work. 
 

Quinn wants tough guys that will hit and tackle. But there is also a place in his defense for guys that can get their hands on the ball even if they aren’t good tacklers. You look at what they did in Dallas with a guy like diggs - they were ok with him biting and getting burned a decent amount because the payoff was so big. I imagine Forbes fits what they want to do in the same way if he can be productive in that manner. If he doesn’t, I’m pretty sure he’ll still be on the team but he’ll see his PT dwindle and probably won’t be around next year. 
 

Bottom line, I think this coaching staff was a Godsend and the best a guy like him or Davis could ask for in order to get closer to their ceiling. But it’s on them to buy in and put in the work. If they do, I think they can elevate their games significantly and be very productive. If not, they won’t be around beyond this year.

It’s not out of the question. But clearly this organization values athleticism and Jamin is one heck of an athlete. I’m hopeful they can bring the best out of him this year but if they can’t then I’m happy to see him go.

Perhaps even more importantly is for the first time in these guys’ careers they have someone playing behind them. I think what Luvu and Wagner will show this year playing behind a special group will be fun to watch. 
 

And that includes a defensive staff that will actually scheme things up for them too. 

Well, after listening to Logan Paulsen the other day I’m all in in Frank Crum OT from Wyoming in the 7th. But damn is he ugly. 

Crazy hypothetical that won’t happen. But curious on others thoughts. 
 

Let’s say the chargers offered Herbert and a 3rd rounder (or if you think that’s rich, name your pick - 4th/5th/whatever) to move up to number 2. The additional compensation is obviously because we’d be taking on his contract. Would you do it?

Keep in mind with the additional capital we’d have that much more ammo to move back up. As in, potentially we could move up and draft Mims and walk out of this draft with Herbert, Amarius Mims and still have probably one second and one third round pick. 
 

It would totally rewrite our salary cap and could be a hindrance in that sense but the value gained could be worth it. Thoughts?

I know contracts are insane compared to just ten years ago but the only thing that really matters is percentage of the cap they take and I’m not sure how much that has really changed. As the cap explodes so will players’ salaries (as they already have) but if the percentage of cap allotted to certain positions doesn’t change too drastically everything stays about the same. Really, the only thing that changes for us is ticket prices and gear lol

I think the biggest thing that bugs me is still mariota. The biggest upside to him is that absolutely no one, fan or player, will be looking for him to come in if a rookie struggles. The biggest downside is that if he has to play due to injury or because a rookie isn’t quite ready, everyone knows he sucks and there will be more pressure to get the rookie in even if he’s not quite ready. 
 

I know Brissett wanted to leave even if he was the best option, it doesn’t seem like that was on the table because he didn’t want to be here. But I would have much preferred Minshew or Flacco as veteran mentors but also guys that I would feel totally comfortable playing with and still having offensive production with. I just have zero faith in Mariota as a player or the personality type to lead the team or a young quarterback. I think he is sincere but also lacks any juice personality wise or on the field.

My biggest concern right now is offensive line. Right now we have Andrew Wylie and Braden Daniels for offensive tackles. I’m unsure if Trent Scott is on the roster - I thought he signed a one year deal. Wylie is fringe starter at best at tackle imo. Daniels was drafted because he’s an athlete and hopefully they can develop him but based on what he showed in camp last year I’m not sure this group would have spent a 7th rounder on him. 
 

I’m certain we’ll sign someone that eventually gets cut but the current crop of FA’s are not an upgrade to Wylie unless maybe Becton can stay healthy and Humphries isn’t gonna be ready to start the year or be 100% when he is ready to play. We all expect an early tackle to be drafted but best case we sign a quality starter and the other OT is a rookie based on what is on the roster. 
 

Based on Quinn and Whitt’s track record I’m am less concerned with CB because of what I believe they can get out of Forbes and BSJ and I have to believe Martin will be on the field a lot as a slot with Chinn and Forrest playing more safety plus there are still quality CB’s on the market like Howard and Gilmore. 
 

Next is TE. Ertz can be a quality pass catcher and Bates is a solid Y. I’m disappointed that Turner hasn’t shown more and Rodgers has some solid upside that I again hope they can maximize what they have but we need someone for the future and it kills me we didn’t get one from last year’s draft crop. 
 

Those are my biggest concerns right now. More future problems like linebacker depth/future as well as receiver I’m happy and confident can be filled through the draft although I would also like to see us bring in a FA or two.
