  1. I love Sam's Porch Rocker. To me, I think it's the perfect summer beer.

I haven't been able to find 6-packs lately, and it makes me sad. I have only found them recently at Wegman's.  I usually pick that up and their Blackberry Wit if I'm in a summery, fruity mood.

  2. I've done a lot of beer drinking this summer and brewery visiting.  Some of my favorites of the summer:

Sam's Porch Rocker- great session beer, perfect when I want something light

Port City Porter- Probably my favorite porter right now.  Great flavor (PS this is a GREAT brewery to visit if you haven't gone)

Sea Dog Hazelnut Porter- was in Maine last week and visited the brewery, tried this and really enjoyed it

Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar- probably my favorite beer, maybe tied with Alesmith (San Diego) Nautical Nut Brown.

Obviously I like heavier, maltier beers.  Especially with a nutty flavor.

If you have one to recommend, I'm all ears :)

Also, if anyone is on Untappd, you can find me under "zapato"

  3. MissU, IMO, most of the zombie movies have been bad to really really bad. I find the same with many "horror" and almost all "slasher" movies over the decades, which are neither good nor scary to me. I like the zombie flicks that are generally acknowledged as the best of the genre--i.e. Romero's original Night of the Living Dead (68--b&w), Dawn of the Dead (04), Land of the Dead (05), 28 Days Later (02)/28 Weeks Later (07), and then Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland which add humor to the theme.

I think that WD (which has it critics--just read the show thread) is excellent overall and at the very top of its genre in any media, flaws and all. You can enjoy that show even if you've never liked the genre. But it is gory of course.

I HATED 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead, and Shaun of the Dead. Gory doesn't bother me. I may try and get into it this summer when I have some time off.

  4. Went to Oxbow Brewery while I was in Maine for Christmas. Small brewery with some very good beers. My favorite was the Saison Noel

(Nose: Dark fruit, Date, Fig, Dark Cherry, suggestions of potporri, dried flower, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, cedar, lemonpeel, pepper, pine, rose hip, lemon balm, maybe a whisp of pipe tobacco, licorice

Taste: Medley of drk fruit, complex spice and earthy grain, warming alcohol with suggestions of tobacco and scotch)

which I had tried at a bar in Maine last year. My brother and I each bought a bottle of Oxtoberfest to take home with us- $20 a bottle! We opened his up and the family tasted it and we were disappointed- realized it was a sour ale and it was aged in a riesling cask . Many of my family members agreed that it tasted like band-aids, while others tasted citrus. Accidentally left my bottle up there (at my grandma's), so maybe it will taste different after a little bit of aging.

Beers at the brewery were all good, though, so we will definitely be returning on our future trips to Maine. A new tradition is born!

  5. Could have at least blacked out the last names...

I thought Robin was MissU? didn't i just see her posting on her recently?

Well, it is facebook, so it's hardly secret was my understanding, but I didn't do the screen shots (they were sent to e-mail) soI dunno. Isn't it pretty normal that if you post on facebook and use your name you expect others to see it? I'm not on facebook so I am not sure how that works. I'd not mind asking TK to edit out their names (he edited out the profanity) if it's really deemed appropriate. Oh, and thanks for your concern for who is offending who here in what manner, Dictator. ;)

Come to think of it, if they don't mind signing their name to their comments, why should I mind repeating such? Wondering how that should be regarded. How did you arrive at your feeling that it was a cruddy thing to do, Dictator? Maybe that would help me.

Ok I'm just seeing this whole thing now, and I don't appreciate that my full name was posted in here. I didn't say anything particularly damning on his status, but it was still unnecessary to put that out there. My personal facebook is privatized to friends only, and while I understand that what I post on other people's pages may not be private, that is still different than posting it on a website with a much broader base of people. I know I am not anonymous to many people on this board, but I would like to remain somewhat anonymous to the others, for personal and career reasons. I appreciate that the screen caps were taken down.

  6. Finally watched Thor for the first time last night:

    MV5BMTYxMjA5NDMzNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTk2Mjk3NA@@._V1._SY317_.jpg

The powerful but arrogant warrior Thor is cast out of the fantastic realm of Asgard and sent to live amongst humans on Earth, where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.

I really enjoyed it. I know nothing of the Avengers and have seen Iron Man and one of the Hulks a long time ago. I have been wanting to see this movie, even though I didn't really know the plot. I enjoy "fish-out-of-water" tales, so when Thor came to Earth, it was humorous.

    MV5BMjIwNjM5NTE1M15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMzgxOTA1Ng@@._V1._SY317_CR0,0,214,317_.jpg

A retired CIA operative is paired with a young FBI agent to unravel the mystery of a senator's murder, with all signs pointing to a Soviet assassin.

This movie was decent. They gave away a main surprise really early on, but there is another twist near the end that is interesting.

  7. We watched Freelancers the other day:

    MV5BMjEyNjQ4NzM1MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTQyNjcxOA@@._V1._SY317_CR0,0,214,317_.jpg

The son of a slain NYPD officer joins the force, where he falls in with his father's former partner and a team of rogue cops

Not something I'd pick up to watch on my own, but I got it on a whim as something I would watch with the bf. He and I have very different taste in movies, though I will usually watch crime dramas with him. It has Robert DeNiro, who is one of my favorite actors, so I figured it should be somewhat decent. I mean, DeNiro wouldn't sign on to a crap movie, right?

Er... he could not save it. 50 Cent is too bad of an actor. DeNiro did his part well, but the rest of the movie was pretty boring, to be honest. Very cliche' "bad cop" stuff and some of the sex scenes are kind of ...odd. If you've seen it, maybe you know what I'm talking about, but my bf and I were kinda like, "wtf?"

And is it just me, but is Forest Whitaker unlikeable in every role he plays? I don't really follow him, and actually looking at his IMDB, I don't think I've seen any of his other movies (haha), but I'm not a fan.

  8. Fermented with real peaches, the natural fruit sugars and yeast make a tart, fizzy brew that’s almost Prosecco-like in flavor.

Ugh, I tried this at DFH about a month ago and I didn't like it at all- too sweet. I like fruity beers, but I wasn't a fan of this.

  9. Goon

2011 comedy film directed by Michael Dowse, written by Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg, and starring Seann William Scott and Liev Schreiber. The main plot depicts an exceedingly nice but somewhat dimwitted man who becomes the enforcer for a minor league ice hockey team.

Surprisingly funny and entertaining movie. Plenty of hockey violence for those who like that sort of thing.

I watched this on Saturday....I didn't like it. The best part was Sons of Anarchy's Tig as the head coach. I don't know what it was that I didn't quite like about it.

  10. Just watched Project X.

    11163085_det.jpg

3 high school seniors throw a birthday party to make a name for themselves. As the night progresses, things spiral out of control as word of the party spreads.

This movie gave me anxiety. I am too high strung and too much of a goody goody to watch people wreck houses and incite riots. The music was good, but it wasn't for me.

Oh, and not much of a comedy. I laughed once, when this midget came out of the oven.

I also watched 1000 Words earlier tonight (movie night).

    MV5BMTAzODAwODkwMjBeQTJeQWpwZ15BbWU3MDI4MDE3NDc@._V1._SY317_.jpg

After stretching the truth on a deal with a spiritual guru, literary agent Jack McCall finds a Bodhi tree on his property. Its appearance holds a valuable lesson on the consequences of every word we speak.

eh, it was okay. The second half of the movie was better and there was only one funny part. I liked the ending. Sappy and typical Eddie Murphy family movie.

  11. \

They just started bottling it last month. They dropped the Nautical from the name. A friend of mine runs a bottle shop that ships if you ever feel like treating yourself.

    http://www.bineandvine.com/

Wow, THANK YOU for this link! I went through the order process but it was going to cost 35 bucks to ship it. I think I will save this link for special occasions. I have tried to have Karl Strauss ship their beer out here before, and they wouldn't, so it is awesome to have all our favorite SD beers on this list. No Karl Strauss amber, though, but we like the Red Trolley ale. My basket also had Stone Levitation and Ballast Point Pale. They sell the IPA out here, but my bf likes the pale. I will definitely keep this site bookmarked.

  12. i never realized you live out in San Diego. My parents live there now and I will be visiting in August. What are some of the best breweries to hit up when we are out there and where are they located?

You definitely need to hit up Stone in Escondido. The brewery/restaurant out there is INSANE. I think their hotel is open now, too.

Karl Strauss has some good beers- their amber is my boyfriend's favorite. More of a restaurant than a brewery, but they brew there. We used to go to the one in Carlsbad all the time, but there's one further south.

Green Flash brewery is out there, too.

AND.... Alesmith brewery is near Miramar. My favorite beer (of all beers, not just Alesmith beer) is probably Alesmith's Nautical Nut Brown. I wish I could buy it out here.

  13. Saturday night my girlfriend had on Lifetime Movie Network and I thought "great, another lifetime movie". Then I just happened to catch the guy typing in "marinesniper" as his screen name and I suddenly remembered reading about the movie after discovering it in this thread haha. I watched the rest of the movie from that point, and watched the parts that I missed on the encore showing afterwards. I thought it was really good.

oh great, I'll check on Lifetime! Thanks!

  14. I got some Elder Betty from Magic Hat for my girl last night. Ended up drinking 3 of them myself. I've had some truly lame beer from Magic Hat, but it was a solid balance between Berry and Wheat flavors. Not bad, but definitely a beer I could finish under a minute without consciously trying.

That sounds good- I will try it tonight. Trader Joe's has a couple of bottles that you can buy in singles, so it only cost me a buck 25. Great way to try beers out without buying a whole 6-pack.

    ---------- Post added June-22nd-2012 at 10:51 AM ----------

ps anybody going to the nova brewfest tomorrow? (or sunday)?

  15. Yesterday, while at Trader Joes, I picked up two beers to try:

    magic-hat-elder-betty.jpg

    and

    Blueberry+Ale+1.JPG

Have not tried them yet, and haven't been in the mood for fruity beers for a while. I love brown ales, they are my number one favorite. But maybe since it is summer I want something a little less heavy, and these looked good. I love a good blueberry beer- one of my favorites is Sea Dog brewery's blueberry beer.

FYI, this blueberry beer is NOT good, it is disgustingly sweet (and I like sweeter, maltier beers):
