So, my question is, is a ref obligated to tell the player if he's lined up correctly or not? I assumed it was more of a courtesy type thing. Ultimately, a player should be responsible for his awareness of where he's lining up, no?

Based on what ive read and heard is that no, the ref isn't obligated.  But this is very common practice such that receivers and refs communicate on nearly every play of every game.  To throw a flag especially at that point in the game when Terry (and all other receivers on both teams) was just doing what was common practice is ridiculous.

I think one of the biggest problems teams and fans have with officiating is consistency.  They want to call it tight? Fine... but be consistent.  They want to let the players play?  Fine but be consistent.  When its something like this so out of left field and NOT consistent with how things had been called to that point is when people get upset.  Its those calls especially that have a direct affect on the outcome of a game.

My issue is with Terry. Why does he need a ref to tell him if he’s close enough to the line?

From my understanding the perspective Terry or a WR has makes it difficult to tell exactly if they are lined up on the line.  A few inches to far and they are off sides.  The linesman is looking right down the LOS and can see so receivers typically ask the ref if they are good.  As Terry did.  Same as always.   Then the flag after Terry was told he was good.

I'm looking forward to the Niners game, they aren't unbeatable, Seattle with 9 penalties, a turnover on their half of the field and a drop on what would have been an easy Int Purdy threw to a Seattle defender who was standing flat footed and dropped it. Their D is nasty but I don't see some unstoppable force.

I would agree with you that they aren't unbeatable and that they aren't an unstoppable force... the problem is our offense regardless of who is at QB is completely "stoppable".  They will wear down our defense with their very strong run game and eventually take over the game.  Thats assuming it isn't a blowout because of offensive blunders/mistakes etc.

  4. This team doesn't have a viable option at QB.  The arguments for or against TH or Wentz are silly IMO.  What you gain by putting in Carson doesn't give you any better chance to win in my opinion because of his liabilities.  TH has to many liabilities to win consistently without a lot of luck and/or the defense scoring points.

I am leaning towards hoping they put Carson in.  We've seen bad TH for a few games and its probably time to see some more bad from Carson.  Need to make sure Ron doesn't somehow forget that Wentz sucks and talk himself into keeping Carson  during the off season.
