  1. I feel like the rap on Daniels going through progressions is based on old facts (i.e., freshman year at ASU) and/or outdated stereotypes on dual threat QBs. The story of Daniels' work on progressions is pretty well-documented and involves a lot of work/practice over an extended period of time - and including work with some pretty cool tech. Here are a few articles documenting his ... progression. On progressions. Um, yeah. The Athletic (Sept. 2022): https://theathletic.com/3639165/2022/09/29/lsu-football-jayden-daniels-passing/ SI (Jan. 2023): https://www.si.com/college/lsu/football/tale-of-the-tape-lsu-qb-jayden-daniels-growth-in-2022 The Athletic (Dec. 2023): https://theathletic.com/5121231/2023/12/08/jayden-daniels-lsu-football-ai-technology/ For me, personally, none of this eases my post-RG3 terror at the idea of Daniels get crash-dummied out of a career by one Micah Parsons hit. But he's obviously a bright kid and a football junkie obsessed with getting better, so that's good. I think.
  2. Keep hiring coaches for the offense, every added name means a better hedge against The Bobby Johnson Effect being more than a one-off, er, two-off, situation. Think of the children, GMAP, think of the poor little toddler QBs.
  3. I'm submitting an application for Senior Assistant Defensive Advisor to the Offensive Passing Game Coordinator, yes it's a made-up title but really, at the current hiring rate in Washington who will notice? I feel pretty good about my chances.
  4. I don't see the Commanders trading down in what appears to be considered a very good but also top-heavy QB draft, with experts apparently seeing a gap between the top 3 and the next group. Even if Washington did trade down, I don't see them taking either McCarthy or Penix, for different Air Raid related reasons. McCarthy simply doesn't have the arm strength for all the expected downfield shots in Kingsbury's version of the offense; and Penix is a statue not suited for the heavy emphasis on RPO in Kingsbury's scheme. Remember, Kingsbury created his flavor of Air Raid to suit Mahomes at Texas Tech. If they did trade down and still went QB, I'd expect them to target Nix, who, like Williams, Maye and Daniels, has the arm, accuracy and mobility to run Kingsbury's offense. Nix isn't as good as Williams off-platform; maybe doesn't have quite the arm strength of Maye; and isn't quite as fast/elusive as Daniels - but he's arguably second of the four in all those categories.
  5. On Cousins, seems pretty clear Commanders are focused on running some version of Air Raid, and I don't think that aging pocket-passer Cousins, coming off an Achilles injury, is going to be the mobile QB that would be a fit, even if he weren't going to be learning a new offense after 12 years of not-Air-Raid experience. Watching Maye and Daniels clips, I don't see much difference in arm strength or in accuracy/anticipation. Have seen both throw behind receivers at different levels of the field, seen both thread needle in coverage, seen both show good touch/placement on fades/etc. Both look like young QB's with things to work on. What worries me about Daniels is the same thing everybody else sees - skinny kid who could take one bad hit and be done for good. What worries me about Maye is a record of inconsistent performances the last couple years, and saving his worst for last / fading down the stretch in both 2022 and 2023.
  6. All true, and I still think the buzz around hits on Daniels is a little much. Other than the couple of floppy hits we see in the same 'lowlight' reel floating around, I don't recall seeing much in the way of big hits on Daniels in 2023. I saw a lot of him diving to the ground, instead of sliding, which needs to be addressed by NFL coaches, but not the crash dummy stuff. Everyone gets ragdolled once in a while, even those with a (deserved) rep for generally avoiding big hits: (sorry for wonky link/clip of Lamar getting blasted)
  7. Because I still have nightmares about RG3, I'm terrified of seeing Daniels come to Washington and get wiped out on a massive hit. That is one skinny kid. I do think, however, that some of the 'can't avoid a hit' and/or 'can't take a hit' comments are overblown a bit. Yeah, I've seen the video clips of big hits from 2023, and some of those look pretty bad - most specifically, what the crap was Daniels thinking, trying to hurdle his own line straight into a pancake tackle? Don't care if coaches called that play, as QB you gotta see what's happening right in front of you and ... do something different. But I do note a couple things about those clips. First, the legit big hits shown are all in the first third of last season. I haven't seen a clip of him taking a big hit later in the season, which included the meat of the SEC schedule, so that might support an argument he did/can learn to play smarter. In addition, at least a couple of those hits resulted in flags; the Ole Miss player got ejected for targeting, and the Alabama edge (likely first rounder Turner) got flagged for roughing the passer (and should have probably gotten ejected for targeting/helmet-to-helmet if you've seen the clip). So I do think those hits should at least come with an asterisk. Or something.
  8. Agree. Bryce Young didn't run at combine or pro day last year. Ditto for Joe Burrow, who reportedly ran an unofficial 4.9 lol, to go with his tiny tiny hands in the 5th percentile (9.0). Poor guy.
  9. Here's Daniels standing in between Stroud (measured 6'3" at combine) and Bryce Young (measured very' very' smol" at combine) Sooo.... Daniels is right around 6'4"
  10. Looks like Daniels will weigh 210-215 and run 4.4. I was a little surprised to see he was measured right at 21mph on an 85-yard TD run vs Florida this season. Thought he might be little slower with the weight program LSU has had him on last couple years. Pretty impressive that Daniels has steadily improved like he has last few years, while acclimating to significant physical changes - he's come a long way since being a literal 155-pound weaking as a freshman at ASU. Grew a couple inches, put on 55-60 pounds, in four years. And got faster - ran a 4.5 40 as a freshman. Edit: Not related to QB talk, but I thought it was pretty funny that in the video clocking Daniels on that TD run, it also showed LSU WR Brian Thomas hitting over 22 mph to get downfield for the last block lol. Also: LSU clocked Daniels at 23 mph in practices this year. Yikes.
  11. I watched it. Whoever that guy is, he basically just discussed/listed bullet points on the screen overlaying an ongoing clip of usually-unrelated action from the Bama game. Weird. Saw a decent handoff in there. Think he actually showed only two specific plays, totaling about 15 seconds of the 13-minute video, one a dropped int on a bad throw into coverage, the other a tipped-pass int. That said, the bullet points did regurgitate some of the concerns (and some I just didn't see either in his clips or in watching games) we've discussed in this and other threads - takes too many hits, slender, doesn't slide enough. A lot of the other "cons" were things I've not heard anywhere else. I'd love it if Daniels came to Washington and turned out to be everything we always hoped RG3 would be - but I'm not sold on him doing that, either. Still, watching his tape, compared with Willams or Maye, gets me more excited about ... possibilities. And isn't that what the offseason is all about? Let's dream while we can 🙃
  12. I take the Buffalo results with a much larger serving of salt than I do with the Giants results where Bobby Johnson is concerned. Like others have said, NYG invested heavily in OL via draft last several years, including picks during the Johnson years that you'd think were heavily influenced by what the OL coach wanted. And the word out of NY has consistently been - going back to his first year and not just since he got fired - that Johnson failed miserably at developing all that drafted talent. Also: 134 sacks allowed in two years!! Holy crap. As for Buffalo, seems Josh Allen made/makes that OL look a lot better than it could/should: https://billswire.usatoday.com/2019/09/26/josh-allen-among-nfl-most-pressured-quarterbacks/ https://billswire.usatoday.com/2022/02/20/pro-football-focus-buffalo-bills-josh-allen-preventing-sacks/
  13. Hiring Bobby Freaking Johnson makes absolutely zero sense. None. We had an atrocious OL, gave up a zillion sacks, might have permanently wrecked one young QB in the process, so the solution is.... hire a guy whose OL gave up more than a zillion sacks, two years running (134 total) and who had physical altercations with his own players on the sidelines during games. If this is what Kingsbury making decisions looks like, we're in big trouble.
  14. Not sure I understand why folks might suggest we go non-QB this year, planning to draft one next year. Everything I've seen predicts a huge falloff in QB talent for the 2025 draft. 2024 top 3: Williams, Maye, Daniels (then Penix, Nix, McCarthy) 2025 top 3: Shedeur Sanders, Carson Beck, Quinn Ewers (and/or Drew Allar, Jalen Milroe, Connor Weigman) Yikes. Seems like if Commanders even think they *might* want a rookie QB next couple years, gotta do it this year, while guaranteed one of the top couple/few in a strong QB class.
  15. I agree on Chop, I think he's the typical workout warrior who will get to the NFL and be just as unproductive (and injury-prone? 8 games in 2021, 1 in 22, 7 in 23) as he was in college. Dariius Robinson and Jared Verse, on the other hand, had almost identical stats in 2023, and Robinson played tougher competition (SEC). Darius is the Robinson for me 🙂
  16. "The" Lions beat writer? No. Not even sure he qualifies as "A" beat writer. When he's not doing other podcasts like The Browns Wire or The Draft Wire, he might qualify as part of the "hot take media" mob referenced in this article that discusses actual Lions beat writers: https://www.prideofdetroit.com/2023/7/11/23790660/best-detroit-lions-beat-writer-reporters-outlets-websites Curiously, none of the guys listed there have even hinted at the "standing offer" - or any offer - the Commanders might have made to Baby Ben. I suspect that, like others in this derailed thread have said, Risdon put out a saving-face rumor to make the Tiny Johnson feel better, and that at best, Risdon was mistakenly referring to a GMAP inquiry (say, Ben, please tell me there's no truth to that wacky $15M rumor we saw? You'd be open to something in the normal range for first-time OC's, right? RIGHT??). No need to die on this hill, SCS - instead, please start digging for some info on who our next OC will be (like this rumor we've contacted Spurrier to gauge interest) kk thx bai. Thanks for playing. 😜
  17. Which is why 4D-chess-playing GMAP will bring in Klint Kubiak to run that offense against Quinn's D in practice every day. Ya hear that, Blizzard? EVERY DAY. 😈
  18. Interesting, because according to Dallas reporting via multiple team sources, Whitt is the leading candidate to replace Quinn there as DC. So I guess if he's coming here, it's as Quinn's DC.
  19. "I'd just like to thank SoCalSkins for all the support I might or might not otherwise be getting from the girdle under this sexy black tux"
  20. I just realized I love this hire. It's the best hire ever. Because our new HC's initials are DQ. And that makes me think of So yes, I'm totally on board. It's the most delicious hire in Commanders history.
