  1. Seems like that just highlights one of the issues with Maye, maybe his most serious: inconsistency. All three of the top guys had couple/few games against lesser competition this year, so we don't see 'experts' using those for breakdowns. With Maye, those were Appalachian State and Campbell, leaving 10 games to pick from. He threw multiple picks in three of those; UNC lost four of those; completed <60% in four of those; threw <300 yds in five; QB rating <140 in four; ran for 25 or less in 5. Other than maybe the Syracuse game, he was gonna get something not-great happening. Which I think is pretty natural for such a young QB with ho-hum talent around him. Maye will mature and smooth out the rough edges - same thing that happened with Daniels. I think that's why this guy is saying Maye would be best served 'apprenticing' behind a solid vet. Unfortunately for Maye, that's not usually the situation a rookie QB getting picked at the top of the first round is heading into. Personally, I'm hoping really hard that the Commanders convince Brissett to come back to D.C. as the bridge/mentor for Maye, with Howell traded.
  2. Now see, this is the kind of hyperbole that gives us "Maye guys" a bad name. Because of you (go to timeout right now young man!), I just watched every offensive snap of LSU's first 9 games (Florida St., Grambling, Miss. St., Arkansas, Ole Miss, Missouri, Auburn, Army, Alabama) and I saw the following from that slippery mother****** Daniels: Florida St. - Blasted once (the ill-advised and now-infamous 'hurdle' play) Grambling - Nothing (Note: only played first half) Miss. St. - Blasted once with an asterisk - Defensive player ejected for targeting on that tackle (Note: came out early Q4 due to score) Arkansas - Nothing Ole Miss - Blasted once on the much-replayed Q1 fumble (twice if you want to count the late hit out of bounds in Q3) Missouri - Nothing (solid tackles 4:35 2Q, running TD end 3Q, but not blasted) Auburn - Nothing (good tackle 10:00 Q4, but not blasted) (note: the first sort-of-legit Daniels slide I've seen so far) (note: if you like helmet-deflected interceptions, ff to 2Q 2:50) Army - Nothing (Note: only played first half) Alabama - Blasted once with an asterisk (Turner flagged for roughing, should have been ejected for targeting) (Note: did not play in Q4 due to concussion protocol from Turner hit) Haven't watched last 3 games yet. So probably two legit big hits so far, plus 3 asterisks (Miss. St. ejection, Ole Miss late hit, Turner roughing). That's it. Let's cool it on the exaggerations about hits Daniel takes/took. Yes, he's a breathing stick figure and might make some really crunchy sounds on his last play ever in the NFL. But it's not like he's regularly getting crash-dummied. And when my boss wants to know why I got nothing done this afternoon, I'm totally throwing you under the bus -"clskinsfan made me do it!" So get ready I'm sure she'll know who I'm talking about. Definitely.
  3. Dang, Merril, just tell us how you really feel 🤨 https://www.yardbarker.com/college_football/articles/merril_hoge_explains_shocking_takes_on_drake_maye_caleb_williams/s1_13132_40020459 Hoge said during a Monday morning appearance on Washington, D.C. sports radio station 106.7 The Fan that he "wouldn’t draft" North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye in the first round of the 2024 player-selection process. "There are a bunch of things that bother me – he’s extremely inconsistent, his accuracy and processing are inconsistent, he misses a lot of hots, he’s not extremely athletic, and I find him more stiff," Hoge said about Maye. "He's got a longer throwing motion which allows more hits in our league than he gets in college, and I’m just bothered by it." "When you see an inconsistent thrower in college, and these pockets are clean and people are wide open...when you create a dirty pocket for them, it gets worse," Hoge said about his evaluations.
  4. First reasonable thing monkey man has posted in this thread 😋 Kidding, kidding! Sort of. 🤪 Trent Dilfer likes Maye. And look at that last comp, LSU fans 😃 : https://www.on3.com/college/north-carolina-tar-heels/news/trent-dilfer-breaks-down-what-makes-unc-qb-drake-maye-special-2024-nfl-draft/ “I have nothing bad to say about Drake. But it’s different now. This is not apples to apples,” Dilfer said. “Drake Maye has what you call the gift of smooth. Drake, yes, has good horsepower. Yes, has good twitch. But, really, his gift is making hard things look easy.” “He’s very fluid, he’s very smooth, he’s a good processor. He has good athletic traits, not great,” continued Dilfer. “More of a wing forward in basketball where Caleb is the dynamic scorer. Because of Caleb and because of how notable he is? Drake’s not going to get the attention that he would’ve gotten from other drafts. Because I think he’d be No. 1 in other drafts. From there, Dilfer spoke with Breer about comparisons for Maye at the next level. That’s where he continued his high praise as he named three quarterbacks who are among who many believe are within the Top-10 at the position in the league today. “You’re just going to hear a lot of (Justin) Herbert and Josh Allen. You’re going to hear a lot of that when the evaluators start evaluating,” said Dilfer. “He’s a big guy but he’s really, really fluid, really smooth.” “He’s (Joe) Burrow. That’s exactly who he is. He’s Joe Burrow, who we know is one of the great players in the NFL,” Dilfer said. “Burrow’s a very good athlete, he was a very good high school basketball player, he’s a great competitor. But what separates Joe Burrow is this innate quality, this nuance to his game that people want to say is something that’s it’s not.”
  5. Gotta say every time I see/hear a mention of the Alabama game, I get angry all over again at Saban, for letting Turner off the leash to knock Daniels out of the game with a vicious helmet/helmet hit that should have resulted in ejection for targeting, after these halftime comments: “It's the whole thing, man. The guy is killing us with the scrambles,” Saban said of Daniels during halftime of Alabama football vs. LSU in Week 10 (h/t Mike Rodak of Bama247). “We're not keeping him in the pocket. We're playing a lot of match coverage, so there's nobody to break on the ball when he does scramble. We got spies on him. The spies can't get him on the ground. That's the whole key to the drill.” https://clutchpoints.com/alabama-football-news-nick-sabans-honest-jayden-daniels-halftime-assessment-hype-lsu Just seems like Saban saw 2022 happening all over again and decided to 'do something about it.'
  6. So how do we take this seed and snowball it into manifesting Caleb to Commanders? Ideas, people, we need ideas! https://www.nfl.com/videos/david-carr-jayden-daniels-is-better-fit-for-waldron-s-offense-than-caleb-williams-is David Carr: Jayden Daniels is better fit for Waldron's offense than Caleb Williams is NFL Network's David Carr explains why he firmly believes that reigning Heisman winner and LSU Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels would be a better fit than USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams for the Chicago Bears and the offense that newly-hired Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron likes to operate.
  7. Since the article was from yesterday, my take was, he was suggesting Commanders were focusing in on Daniels going into the combine. Who knows what "reports" he's talking about though.
  8. https://www.profootballnetwork.com/tony-catalina-2024-nfl-mock-draft-february-25/ 2) Washington Commanders: Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU There are reports that Dan Quinn and the Commanders are doing extensive research on the Heisman Trophy winner. The stack between the top three QBs can go a multitude of different ways, with differences of opinion on the No. 2 and No. 3 prospects changing depending on the team.
  9. I hear teams are using psychologists/similar for the combine interviews, creating profiles for review by GMs/coaches.
  10. I was actually going to use 2021 as a comp for this year. QBs went 1/2/3 that year and none of them did drills at the combine. The next 'tier' (Fields, Jones, Trask) did run. I think this is definitely a 'hate the game, not the player(s)' situation, with agents pulling guys out of things left and right. Ironic, since the combine was originally created so players could just go to one place instead of the various 'camps' teams previously ran. Now, players don't do the drills, and coaches increasingly don't even go to the combine, sending scouts/admins instead.
  11. Yeah, I think between game film, pro days and private workouts, teams will know what they need to (physical skills wise) in order to buy whichever lottery ticket they want from the top prospect pool. Seems like interviews (even if they're just 20-minute sessions started and ended via bullhorn) are the most important thing at this stage for teams. Get the kids into a room, get that first 1/1 impression. Saw where some teams actually have psychologists handle the combine interview while coaches/etc just watch. Weird. My guess is, agents (or in Caleb's case, Caleb's mirror) are advising them to skip combine workouts because of risk (injury? bad day?) / reward (move up maybe one spot?), not worth it for few virtually locked into top 3 spots with existing info.
  12. Since I was silly last night, figured I'd post something interesting about Maye that's been mentioned some, but not really discussed - the kid's really intelligent and a football junkie, two things I think are super important especially for a young QB. Two-time All-ACC Academic Team: https://goheels.com/news/2024/1/31/football-maye-leads-tar-heels-all-acc-academic-honorees 2023 OC interviewed about Maye: https://www.on3.com/college/north-carolina-tar-heels/news/chip-lindsey-reveals-whats-surprised-him-about-drake-maye/ “I think the thing that probably I didn’t know before is he’s really intelligent. He’s really smart. Football smart. His football IQ is really high,” responded Lindsey. “I mean, he does well in school. He’s got a great GPA and all that, but he understands every aspect of offense. From offensive line play, to who should be working to who in zone schemes, to who we’re working to in pass sets. In pass protections, he’s able to change the protection. That’s something that he’s taken to really quickly, and they did some of that before too. But I think that would be the thing, I mean not knowing him from the outside, you see the talent. You see the physical skills. That hadn’t surprised me a bit. But getting here and realizing he’s a football junkie. He understands football. He loves it, and very, very intelligent player.” I also love the fact that Maye is the youngest of 4 boys, all athletes, who survived getting whooped on at everything as the family 'runt' until a late growth spurt, with good results described by his dad (former NFL QB) in interview: "He had to really learn how to bring it in backyard basketball or football. He was also the smallest. He did not grow as fast. That helped him in a lot of ways." "Drake, out of all my kids, is probably the most competitive. Drake loves to win and has the mindset of just wearing you out. If he's up 50-0 in football, he's going to keep going and not feel bad about it at all. Drake will drive you into the ground and not feel bad about it. That's what you want." https://247sports.com/longformarticle/the-making-of-a-unc-royal-family-drake-mayes-father-discusses-raising-the-star-qb-alongside-brother-luke-212647574/#2194620
  13. Wait. I thought it was Cult of Caleb. Is this a splinter group? Cause if we've got some disgruntled Caleb followers, I invite them to join me in Bo's Blabberwockies.
  14. One thing I really like about this is, the play happens so quickly folks might not realize that was a 45 yard bullet.
  15. Here's a pretty good article from a Patriots writer earlier this week, giving what I think is a pretty fair assessment of Daniels' arm limitations, along with a Maye report that should get Commanders fans pretty excited about the guy I think will be starting for us in 2024. (edit: Don't stop reading after the Big Three or you'll miss a scary comp for Spencer Rattler and a fun nickname for the Tennesee QB lol) https://www.patriots.com/news/lazar-s-nfl-draft-tiers-pre-combine-quarterback-rankings "There's a playmaking gene to Maye's game that could be seen as a carrying trait with a knack for extending plays either by avoiding or playing through contact. But his ability to both drive the ball and layer throws into the middle of the field stands out the most. Maye is one of the best middle-of-the-field throwers I've studied over the last handful of draft classes, and it's especially intriguing that he can drive the ball between the numbers on a rocket up the seam and throw with touch into a coverage void."
  16. Or this 😋 ( from this link: https://www.sportsmockery.com/chicago-bears/jayden-daniels-scouting-report-if-rgiii-could-read-defenses/ ) "This is a professional throw in every sense of the word. Daniels starts off looking to his left, holding the coverage in place. Then, he shifts his progress to the one-on-one matchup with Lacy. While the receiver doesn't have much separation, the QB still doesn't hesitate. He rips the ball with authority, fitting it into an impossibly tight window. Three inches further, it's incomplete. Three inches shorter, it's intercepted. That is a throw NFL quarterbacks make." Jayden-Daniels-Top-Plays-of-2023-CFB-Season.mp4
  17. Or Trey Lance's 6.47 .... or Kenny Pickett's 6.4. 😋 I don't think we really want to play that game.
  18. I thought this headline from a Chicago reporter was funny, but it also made me cry a little. Jayden Daniels Scouting Report: If RGIII Could Read Defenses And here's a Drake Maye comp (from Jeremiah on NFL.com last summer) that did not make me cry at all, I'd run to the podium if we're getting Carson Palmer 2.0. Scouting Drake Maye: North Carolina quarterback similar to Carson Palmer
  19. I just can't get past Daniels' build, really worried he's gonna have a short career due to repeated hits - he doesn't look to have a frame that can support adding much more weight, feels like LSU might have maxed out whatever muscle he can add without adversely affecting athleticism. Seems to have narrow shoulders, long neck, feels like bad injury waiting to happen. /end RG3 PTSD. That said, I do think the 'one-year wonder' slant is off base. Daniels' 2022 compares favorably to Maye's 2023, and Daniels' 2019 (freshman) and 2022 seasons were better than Burrow's 2018. Daniels had two pretty good years and then closed out with a monster 2023. Looks like development to me, not one-hit wonder status. I think Daniels will be good, the question is, for how long? With Maye, my question is, will he be good? Because if he is, feels like he'll be good for a looooong time. If we're going to buy a QB lottery ticket, I want the chance to win a 15-20 year Pro Bowler, not a 2-3 year All Pro. I do hope I'm wrong about Daniels, because I think his character and positive attitude would be really good for the NFL.
  20. This bugged me about both Williams and Daniels, who both do that a lot (I'm sure others do it too, but not watching film on others...), I just don't get playing with it hanging out of your mouth like a twizzler or something. Either use it or don't, it's not jewelry guys. Ugh.
  21. I guess we can finally lock this cursed thread, we'll now obviously be signing Kirk and drafting Joe Alt kk thx bai. NFL salary cap rises $30.6 million to record $255.4 million per team
  22. Grant Paulsen joins The Sports Junkies to debate if Drake Maye will be a bust in the NFL.
