I don’t really care about Ben Johnson at this point and I’m cool with Quinn assuming he doesn’t hire Chip Kelly.

What concerns me about the below is that it appears Peters has less sway on major hiring decisions than we thought he would.  It’s an early warning sign to me that there are too many cooks in the kitchen, especially if we’re not letting the true “football guys” be the ones solely making the decisions.

So much tea leaves reading to get to that conclusion though.  It could also be (likely even), that everyone, including Peters had Johnson on the shortlist (we know the team asked for permission to interview Johnson even before Peters was hired).  The interview was subpar and the group collectively said he might not be the top candidate.  I'm not sure what evidence would point to Peters being overruled on wanting Johnson.

That was aimed less at the team and more  aimed at the posters on this board. The ones acting like the current unhappy fans are being irrational or unreasonable giving the unfolding of events. Obviously, we won't know if its starting to work until at least a month into the new season, so everyone is going to have to wait.

Now, Harris may not have come out, looked into a camera and said "We're hiring a young, fresh coach.". However, everything he's done with current hires, his past hiring history and what he has said points to a different direction. I can tell you he definitely didn't say he want an "old, stale, 2nd chance coach". When he said he wanted to model the Ravens, I didn't think he meant with an older coach.

Whatever, no point in arguing or "debating" this anymore until week 5 in my eyes.

If you meant some of the fans or posters were promising a young fresh coordinator, I mean that's obviously worth what internet speculations are worth.

I'll just point out that with his other franchises, Harris has never hired a head coach without previous head coaching experience (at minimum overseas).  So there was really no reason to expect a young coordinator hire based on his history.

I don't think any owner wants a "old, stale" coach.  Whether Dan Quinn is old, stale depends on one's opinion, but based on reputable reporters like Keim, this team's leadership group thought highly of Quinn from the get go and he was always a serious candidate who interviewed very well.  The fact that they included him in the shortlist is pretty good evidence that they never thought of him as old or stale.  Team talked about leader of men from the beginning.  By all reports, he seems to be a good leader.  Whether that actually translates to a good winning team is something we'll have to see.

So more info is starting to come out, doesn't make me feel any better yet, but I'm willing to let things unfold for a bit before I put this hiring in the same category as the Carson Wentz trade (I'm trying to be objective...I really am.). Still doesn't look like a win in my eyes (at this time) and some of the ways some people are trying make this an easier pill to swallow really need to work on their bed side manner. I don't know who would be happy or excited about this hire, so lets not pretend we all should be baking a cake right now. We were promised young, fresh and new...we got none of that.

Now, some of you are trying to say that we need Quinn as a bridge hire until we can get a young, fresh, coach...how is this completely different from Rivera? The coaches involved may not be exactly the same, but this situation seems quite familiar.

Stop conflating chatter on the internet or even journalists with team positions.  The team never talked about young, fresh, or new.

Also even if some posters are talking about bridge hires, I would seriously doubt that anyone associated with the team has any interest in bridge hires.  No one has to like the hire, but some of the discussion surrounding it makes gameday threads look like roundtable with Nobel Laureates.

When I read Quinn’s press release, I think they’re the same exact words used from Ron Rivera’s signing.

”deserved a second chance as head coach…. Has the respect of the players…. Leader of men… defensive mastermind… was head coach in a Super Bowl… “

im going to read every press release going forward and just imaging its for Ron.

There was a press release for Quinn's hire?

To be fair, the CBS pregame show (Phil Simms) said that Johnson to Washington was happening. That’s a bit different than a fan blog or YouTube channel.

Simms or Esiason? Either way, they are not journalists like Keim or Schefter.  If it was Esiason, I believe that was during a radio and he came across to me as expressing his belief/thought, rather than reporting some insider knowledge or source.

  6. Keim, the most reliable reporter on the Commanders, have been saying for a while now that Johnson was not a lock, Quinn was very high, and they had not settled on any particular candidate when Johnson withdrew and Macdonald took the Seattle job.  Yet so many seem to take rando aggregator takes to buy that Commanders got spurned by their top choices and had to settle on Quinn.  Just having a Twitter account or YouTube channel doesn't make one a reliable source of info.

Interesting if true. Otoh, I suspect Detroit's gonna be damn good next year with Jameson Williams, a largely unexplored option since being drafted top 12 or 15 in '22, added to an already humming offense, LaPorta and Gibbs in year 2, Monty with another year or two left before he fully collapses on the age cliff. They should be really, really good. If they are, he's gonna be asked. But yeah, I would bet that GM's would be suspicious now. No chance to avoid that, with weird behavior in back to back offseasons (even if it was explicable, this year, it was still crappy behavior).

At minimum, a deep run into the playoff next year probably creates a big hurdle for him to remain in consideration or outright eliminates him.  Teams will likely be reluctant to roll the dice on him not repeating what happened this year.

You are missing my point Gibbs started 0-5....this clown ended 0-5 there a BIG difference.

Your original statement made no distinction.  But even then, you really can't make generalization about a coach from a small sample size of W-L record.  Belichick lost almost every game towards the end the season in the lead up to his first firing in Cleveland.  What did that say about his competence?

Why are facts sarcasm? Quinn went 0-5 in 2020 after 5 seasons with the falcons I don't think that's a good sign of a good coach yeah he had his run to the super bowl where Matt Ryan played lights out but I don't think it was Quinns schemes or anything that got them there. Kyle Shanahan.

You know we had a coach in the 80s who started 0-5 right?  No good coach starts 0-5?  Really?

I like how there are some people both here and elsewhere trying their hardest to convince themselves Quinn is a solid hire.

Maybe some of us meant it when we said we want professional football people making the decisions.  Quinn may be the right guy, he may be the wrong guy.  But over a long stretch of time, football professionals making the decisions have a much higher likelihood of sustained success than owners or fanbase opinions.

The Commies should have at least said "Before you do that, at least meet with us."  Or even better "Hey, before you make any final decisions, let us know because we want to be able to meet with you to put our best offer on the table."

Maybe they did those things and he still took the raise and stayed and didn't give the Commies the chance.  Who knows?

On one hand, if they still wanted to push for him, I'm sure they would've asked to at least go through with a meeting.  But on the other hand, it's not improbable for the team to conclude that if Johnson is not all in this year at a HC opportunity, then they are better off looking at other candidates.

I don't want EB being the coach but we have to recognize that it's a stronger possibility now than it was 24 hours ago.  So, the sky might be falling a little bit.

Eh, I mean in a theoretical sense sure.  But is the chance of EB being the next HC or even OC meaningfully higher than before?  I wouldn't have taken +1000 (or whatever the line was) before and I still wouldn't take it.

  12. 8 minutes ago, Spaceman Spiff said:

Sure, it's on them.  I mean, a bunch of people here seem to think the HC job for the Commies is, like, a really good opportunity, one that anyone should be lucky to have.

How the Commies weren't able to keep him on the hook until they arrived to meet with him face to face is their fault.

If Johnson stayed because of a raise, then what were the Commanders supposed to do?  Offer to top it even before the interview?  Don't salary negotiations happen after the HC interview is over?

If Johnson doesn't want a head coaching job right now, then he probably isn't the guy right now and changing his mind by backing up the Brinks truck probably isn't the way to go.  Go hire someone else (and no, not EB).  For all the sky is falling about needing an offensive guy as HC, it looks like Stroud coming off a terrific rookie season is going to continue with the same OC next year.

Goff gets a lot of hate but he's a top 10 QB easily.

I think there are too many QBs near each other to rank them with a cutoff line at 10.  But I view it as QBs with legitimate argument as the best in NFL or at least very close.  Then are the QBs who can't stake a claim as among the best, but undoubtedly can win and even win a championship with.  Goff belongs in that second category for me (along with another 10 or so QBs probably).

See I disagree, he and maye are a lot alike in my opinion, maye may have a slightly bigger arm, but Purdy gets the ball out quick and optimizes the playmakers open space by doing so. They are similar in size and both run well. If maye could be Purdy, then I'm all for maye. All Purdy has done is won since he's been in the league.

Purdy is like 6'1".  His physical profile is very different from Maye.
