  1. do you mean the 'raging *****'? i swear i must have gotten a bad 6 pack of that stuff a month or so ago. it actually tasted just like this- "Band-Aid" like flavor or aroma, that can also present itself as medicine-like or clovey." it tasted like straight plastic. http://www.homebrewzone.com/phenols.htm i also got a sixer of FD classic pale ale 2 weeks ago, and it was definitely bad. maybe someone can answer this, but my dad has made 'homebrew' for about 20 years, and, no matter what kind of beer he's trying to make, it always comes out like this- "Chlorophenols resemble the aforementioned taste descriptors combined with bleach. Phenols are usually part of the flavor profile in Belgians and Wheat beers however.", which is a continuation of the paragraph from the above link. it has sort of a rotten, moldy taste to it. but, my dad doesnt seem to notice it at all. he thinks its fine, and i dont have the heart to tell him it tastes funny. so, any of you homebrewers, feel free to fill me in on why his beer tastes wierd. i've only gotten store bought beer one other time that had that moldy taste to it, and coincidentally, it was another frederick brewery- 'blue ridge'. i think they arent in business anymore.
  2. i went about a year ago. it was fun. they give you a glass to keep and about 5 chips worth about a quarter of a pint of beer for, i think, 5 bucks. the tour guide was pretty funny and informative. the brewery itself is really just a big warehouse- nothing fancy. and, unfortunately, the beer really isnt discounted much if at all. still costs $20 for a 12 pack there. but its a good time. i finally picked up some sierra nevada bigfoot ale. i dont know why but i was expecting it to be syrupy and sweet. it wasnt at all. good stuff. although for drinking more than one, i'd drink the torpedo.
  3. i am just going to have to break down and get a 6er of bigfoot. i read a few reviews and the hop factor i keep hearing is enough to make me try it out. of course, i read the same thing about the flying dog raging ***** and that was over the top. i'm not a big fan of syrupy or fruity beers. just getting ready to fishing my second 6er of SV torpedo in 2 weeks. good stuff.
  4. i think i agree with the reviews. its good, but not as hoppy as alot of other IPA's. been awhile since i've had one, but thats how i recall it.
  5. nice. my mother in law lives near there. i'll have to swing by there next time i'm nearby. jmu- whats that bigfoot like? i'm a hop head, and generally stay away from wheat beers or fruity style stuff, but i might try some of that. i had a clipper city barleywine style beer a long time ago, but i cant remember what i thought of it.
  6. i think they have a beer called tadcaster ale? or is it their lager? cant recall, but i had one a few years ago and i thought it was the best beer of its kind i'd ever had. just opening up a sierra nevada torpedo ale.
  7. i usually pay around 7 bucks or more for a 6er. shoppers food warehouse has the best prices in germantown. where do you live? havent had that in a while but i had their stout last week. i like all their beers.
  8. lol. i'm pretty sure i could taste the difference between coors light and miller lite. coors has that funny 'peachy' taste. probably couldnt tell between lite and bud light though.
  9. dominion oak barrel stout is good. i always like a flying dog classic pale ale. neither one is too strong in ABV or overpowering in flavor- not to the point where you cant enjoy a couple. or three. had some brooklys east india pale ale the other day. i was really impressed. very clean, not real heavy, but good hop flavor. got some hoptical illusion from blue point brewery. not sure how it really is yet, cuz i drank one at room temp straight from the store. couldnt wait.... i like the anchor steam porter. picked up a sixer of that last week in a pinch. very nice.
  10. i picked some up tonight. gotta say, the smell and taste starts alot like plastic. finishes very bitter. i'm ok with the bitter. but that thing tastes like a plastic phone book cover. whew! i can tell theres something under it - that hoppiness, if nothing else-that would be very good without that initial shock, but, its not for the faint of heart. of course, it could just be a batch that got a little loose. i am a big fan of the flying dog classic pale ale and IPA. i'm a hop head. but that extra 'flavor' is .....interesting.
  11. you are spot on about the ABV of the loose cannon. you can only have 1 or 2. they used to have it on tap at champions in frederick. i toured the brewery last year. not a bad time. i tried the duclaws beer thats, i think, 20% ABV last year at the frederick beer fest. couldnt handle more than a sip. i'll have to try the hellrazer. flying dog IPA and classic pale ale arent bad. the sierra nevada torpedo ale is similar in hoppiness to the loose cannon. :applause:
  12. how dare you replace the loose cannon?!?! thats great stuff. i had some victory hop devil last year, and it is good stuff. guess we both love hoppy beers. what the heck is up with the harpoon chocolate stout? very odd. not really any body- just a not very heavy chocolate taste with an alcohol finish reminiscent of a shot of vodka. really a strange brew. love the oak barrel stout from dominion and the heavy seas imperial stout, and this stout is really nothing like them. i do like the harpoon IPA, though.
  13. you are the first person i have ever heard who echos my sentiments. a virtual hop extravaganza- probably my favorite beer. hops hops more hops perfect
