  1. Did you not bother to read anything Peter and I posted?

I have to say, I missed it too. Now I think I'll pat myself on the back for saying essentially the same thing as the author. LOL

As fond as I am of my own ideas, one should resist concluding too much, too soon, from a single study.

I'm shocked... SHOCKED I tell you, that the denial-sphere has not reported the authors clarification. :)

  2. I kinda checked out for a month or so, but where is Mad Mike on the whole Billary email server fiasco.  Working in government agencies as I do this is kind of a big deal, but I know on ES it's probably considered a Faux News manufactured silliness.

You work in the gov, they don't really like that.  Not surprised the tailgate doesn't care.  B)

I'm sorry, you seem a bit confused. This thread is about global warming.

You seem further confused in thinking I'm some sort of Hillary fan. And more confused still in thinking I care about democrats in general. I don't. I care about issues. .... like global warming.

  3. any response to Max Planck's research?

Yes. Its a study. When and if it is corroborated by other studies it will be big news. Until then it is only big news to people looking for any little thing to hang their hat on.

2014 Breaks Heat Record, Challenging Global Warming Skeptics - NYTimes.com

“Obviously, a single year, even if it is a record, cannot tell us much about climate trends,” said Stefan Rahmstorf, head of earth system analysis at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany. “However, the fact that the warmest years on record are 2014, 2010 and 2005 clearly indicates that global warming has not ‘stopped in 1998,’ as some like to falsely claim.”

  4. And in this case, these games are being played to obscure and discredit science, as you said.  These politics use bad models and a worse statistic to bolster their beliefs in AGW.

And now the best description of the delusion that is AGW leading to the destruction of the planet reallyi soon:  AGW Maleware.

As Harsanyi points out, an entire ideological framework is implicit in left wing talk of “climate change”. And it is implicit in two ways. One, in the acceptance (and sole recognition of) the catastrophic scenarios considered by the IPCC. And a necessary corollary to this first aspect is ignoring how unlikely the IPCC actually considers these catastrophic scenarios to be.

IF ANYTHING is based in an ideological framework it is climate change denial. Look at the links you provide as "proof".  Breitbart is gushing over the latest propaganda, and JoNova is a blogger without the credentials to dispute NASA. (her major was microbiology, molecular biology).

Meanwhile back in realityland the deniers in politics are far right wing nut jobs like Ted Cruz who are paid for by big oil to try to get NASA to not even study the earth. Here's a thought.... If Cruz is so positive that climate change is not happening, is not man made, and/or cannot be effected by humans, why wouldn't he want NASA to study the issue further to get to the truth?

I'll tell you why. Because he is a corrupt, lying POS who represents oil and coal industries, NOT the american people.

“The interest of [businessmen] is always in some respects different from, and even opposite to, that of the public ... The proposal of any new law or regulation of commerce which comes from this order ... ought never to be adopted, till after having been long and carefully examined ... with the most suspicious attention. It comes from an order of men ... who have generally an interest to deceive and even oppress the public”

Have you read about the author of the piece you quoted?

In other words NOT an actual climate scientist. Tell me, do you go to a dentist about your foot pain?

  6. Aboutas much chance of that as that suit...... :P

Punching him?... Oh he was right there... it would have been so easy. But I value my freedom too much to give it up for one moment of heavenly gratification.

The law suit? We shall see. This thread is just my exploratory mixing bowl of facts. I'm still digging at the money trail. And as time goes on each new report from respected scientific organizations and each new climate event piles the evidence higher and higher.

But right now I'm taking care of myself using health insurance that Republican death panels want to deny me of so I'm a little busy.

And that's about all I have to say to you. You just aren't worth my time.

  7. Global Warming In China: ‘Wealth Accumulation’ Will Amplify Climate Disasters In China, Says Country’s Top Weather Scientist

Comments made this week by China’s meteorological scientists illustrates progress in the country’s acknowledgment of its role in global warming. But the government’s move to ban the smog documentary likewise shows the limits of its willingness to allow the public to participate in the debate.

“To face the challenges from past and future climate change, we must respect nature and live in harmony with it,” Xinhua quoted Guogang as saying during a series of events in advance of World Meteorological Day Monday. “We must promote the idea of nature and emphasize climate security.” Guogang said global warming will threaten major Chinese infrastructure projects, such as the massive Three Gorges Dam in Hubei province, the world’s largest power station in terms of capacity.

  8. Florida employee 'punished for using phrase climate change' | Environment | The Guardian

An employee of Florida’s environmental protection department was forced to take a leave of absence and seek a mental health evaluation for violating governor Rick Scott’s unwritten ban on using the phrases “climate change” or “global warming” under any circumstance, according to a complaint filed against the state.

Bibler was instructed to stay away from the office for two days and told he could return to work only after a mental health evaluation from his doctor verified his “fitness for duty”, the complaint said. In the letter to Florida’s inspector general, Candie Fuller, the state’s Peer director calls for a full investigation to the matter.

Prevent or significantly reduce threats to life and property by eliminating development and redevelopment in high-hazard areas, managing development in other hazard areas, and anticipating and managing the effects of potential sea level rise and Great Lakes level change

    Resource Characterization

Purpose: To determine the extent to which problems and opportunities exist with regard to the enhancement objective.

    1. NOAA: Climate change is getting worse | TheHill

Changes in the earth's climate are increasing at a steady rate, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warned Thursday in a new report.

Greenhouse gas emissions, sea levels, global temperatures and super storms all are trending upward, NOAA said.

"These findings reinforce what scientists for decades have observed: that our planet is becoming a warmer place,” NOAA Administrator Kathryn Sullivan said in a statement Thursday. “This report provides the foundational information we need to develop tools and services for communities, business, and nations to prepare for, and build resilience to, the impacts of climate change.”

The report provides detailed updates on global climate change indicators, which 425 scientists from 57 countries helped to compile.

The NOAA found that greenhouse gas concentrations in the globe's atmosphere continued to rise and reached historically high levels.

For the first time since the NOAA began measuring carbon dioxide at its Hawaii observatory, levels topped 400 parts per million.

  11. The Movie Climate Science Deniers Don't Want You To See | ThinkProgress

The movie exposes many deniers, including cyberbully Marc Morano. Morano was recently Sen. Inhofe’s key climate staffer, and before that Rush Limbaugh’s “Man in Washington,” and before that, the guy who helped launch the Swift Board smear campaign against John Kerry during the 2004 election.

Morano is admittedly a bit player now who runs a low-traffic website (ClimateDepot) with 20th-century levels of social media, but he has found his “niche” in the denial ecosystem — harassing scientists. On his website he publishes the email addresses of pretty much any climate scientist who dares to publish actual peer-reviewed research explaining climate science and the potential dangers of unrestricted carbon pollution.

Climate ethicist Donald Brown, who has been the focus of Morano’s “reprehensible” tactics four times, called it “sheer intimidation.” In 2012, highly-regarded MIT climatologist (and Republican) Kerry Emanuel — another Morano target — wrote me, “I had heard about the hate mail and threats received by others, but am surprised at how little it takes these days to trigger hysterical and hateful responses from the ideologues out there.” Emanuel explained that some emails contained “veiled threats against my wife,” and other “tangible threats.”

What you see firsthand in the movie is that Morano is gleeful and jocular about his pernicious tactics. He explains with a smile how much he enjoyed devising new strategies to “mock and ridicule” climatologists, while working for Inhofe.
  12. 2015 Arctic Sea Ice Maximum Annual Extent Is Lowest On Record | NASA

The sea ice cap of the Arctic appeared to reach its annual maximum winter extent on Feb. 25, according to data from the NASA-supported National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) at the University of Colorado, Boulder. At 5.61 million square miles (14.54 million square kilometers), this year’s maximum extent was the smallest on the satellite record and also one of the earliest.

If you live on the East Coast of the United States, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has just released some statistics that may surprise you:

    • Globally, this has been the hottest winter on record, topping the previous record (2007) by 0.05°F.
    • This was “the 19th warmest winter for the contiguous US.”
    • Globally it’s easily been the hottest start to any year (January-February), beating the previous records (2002, 2007) by 0.07°F.
    • This was the second warmest February globally, and “slightly below” the 20th-century average in the contiguous U.S.
      • Note: For NOAA, winter is the “meteorological winter” (December 2014 to February 2015).
  14. The melting of Antarctica was already really bad. It just got worse. - The Washington Post

Meanwhile, 2015 could be the year of the double whammy — when we learned the same about one gigantic glacier of East Antarctica, which could set in motion roughly the same amount all over again. Northern Hemisphere residents and Americans in particular should take note — when the bottom of the world loses vast amounts of ice, those of us living closer to its top get more sea level rise than the rest of the planet, thanks to the law of gravity.

The findings about East Antarctica emerge from a new paper just out in Nature Geoscience by an international team of scientists representing the United States, Britain, France and Australia. They flew a number of research flights over the Totten Glacier of East Antarctica — the fastest-thinning sector of the world’s largest ice sheet — and took a variety of measurements to try to figure out the reasons behind its retreat. And the news wasn’t good: It appears that Totten, too, is losing ice because warm ocean water is getting underneath it.

  15. NASA and mistakes....

EVERY organization makes mistakes. Take the funding from NASA and give it to someone else and THEY will make mistakes.  The key is, how you manage mistakes and whether you reach your goal.

Hubble Space Telescope - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

When finally launched in 1990, Hubble's main mirror was found to have been ground incorrectly, compromising the telescope's capabilities. The optics were corrected to their intended quality by a servicing mission in 1993.

Hubble is the only telescope designed to be serviced in space by astronauts. After launch by Space Shuttle Discoveryin 1990, four subsequent Space Shuttle missions repaired, upgraded, and replaced systems on the telescope. A fifth mission was canceled on safety grounds following the Columbia disaster. However, after spirited public discussion, NASA administrator Mike Griffin approved one final servicing mission, completed in 2009. The telescope is still operating as of 2015, and may last until 2020

  16. Even people that are wrong a lot are occasionally right and people that are right a lot are occasionally wrong, which is why arguing from authority is a logical fallacy.

in addition, just because a person has ulterior motives doesn't mean the base argument is wrong.

And you do yourself a disservice long term when you don't consider the underlying argument and just look at or for (possible) ulterior motives.

And I've already said, a perfectly reasonable response would have been to ask Cruz for evidence.

If the person would have said, Senator, I don't know what data you've seen, but from my experience based on our current budget, which in real inflation corrected dollars is much less than it was in through out much of the 1960s and less than in the 1990s, I think we are being very inspirational, and I think our climate research is actually an important component of that.  For example...... (I know of the top of my head that one of NASA's climate scientists recently gave a TED talk so he could have talked about that if nothing else).  I'd be interested in seeing what data you on NASA being inspiring.

    That's a great response.

But realistically, at some level Cruz is right.  Mission creep has happened at NASA.  Mission creep generally has negative consequences.

It might not in this case (which I've also already said in a previous post).

But it really doesn't hurt "us" (people that support doing something about climate change) to take a step back and actually consider Cruz's argument.  It ain't like what we've been doing is working really well.  Public opinion polls show that support for climate change is at BEST flat if not down.

It is possible that Cruz (unintentionally) actually made a good point.

And by simply dismissing it as look at what that "stupid" or "bad" or "evil" Ted Cruz is doing, you miss that opportunity.

And by blindly rallying around NASA, like it is some super science agency, and not admitting their faults, you just compound the problem.

I don't know, but I'd be willing to bet if you asked people what they think about current US government science agencies NASA is only higher than the CDC.

Essentially in my life time, the enduring images of NASA haven't exactly been positive.

I mean even right now, we can't put a man into space because they botched the post-shuttle transition.

Yeah and while you are trying to play nice with Ted Cruz, he will be stripping NASA of funding for earth sciences. Not re-directing it to another agency. He will GUT the most important study of our lifetime.

Here's a tip. When budget and allocation of resources is done in response to a need. The most idiotic thing that can be done is to simply call it mission creep and cut the resources.

And do you want to know why I didn't "help" you discuss climate change? Because you are talking to people who don't care about the truth and the only thing you have done is legitimize their argument. Climate change deniers are no better than 9/11 conspiracy theorists. They do not deserve the dignity of arguing their idiotic points. Let them argue with NASA, NOAA, ESA, and the US Military AFTER they explain why they should deserve as much credibility.

And if you think Michael Man is the problem, maybe you should look in the mirror.

Michael Mann Responds to Misleading Filings in Climate Change Lawsuit - The Equation

Stop blaming scientists to inflate your own ego, and stop codling *** ***** like Ted Cruz who only care about gutting climate science funding. Until you can do that, you are part of the problem.

  17. And meanwhile back in the real world.....

NASA: Earth Tops Hottest 12 Months On Record Again, Thanks To Warm February | ThinkProgress

There had never been as hot a 12-month period in NASA’s database as February 2014–January 2015. But that turned out to be a very short-lived record.

NASA reported this weekend that last month was the second-hottest February on record, which now makes March 2014–February 2015 the hottest 12 months on record. This is using a 12-month moving average, so we can “see the march of temperature change over time,” rather than just once every calendar year.

We are experiencing the continuation of the global warming trend that made 2014 the hottest calendar year on record. The very latest sciencesays we should expect an acceleration in surface temperature warming to start quite soon. What is happening now is consistent with that.
