Statistically, he might be just that. His stats might be on par with the guy getting a bunch of garbage yards. That's not Heinicke though. Every yard he gets is tooth and nail clawing. Moving and inspiring his teammates.  It's not fair to ignore HOW he gets those yards, which is often as he pushes his team forward. It's almost ridiculous how we FINALLY have a QB who inspires the league and we have a thread ****ing about how tight of a rope his passes are.

This is why we can't have nice things

Point taken - he's a genuine leader. Personally, I'd start him until he's Brady's age just because I enjoy watching him play.

I've already said that my view can change as the season progresses and I'm completely willing to do so with a whole season's sample size. But as of right now he's a borderline middle of the road QB. Not bad, not great.

It already has. If memory serves, you viewed him as a quality backup about a month ago. From that to lower mid-range starter is solid improvement.

I was right there, in the upper deck at about the 10 yard line. I managed to get my seat cushion all the way into the corner of the end zone.

Heck, that might be me in the puff-top hat right after the throw.

This is what I think I think:

    1. barring a calamity in camp  Fitz starts the season regardless of how well Taylor looks.

    2. barring an absolute miracle year (fingers crossed), at some point, Fitz is either going to have a mini-bad play streak or get dinged and Rivera will turn to Taylor.

    3. if Taylor plays like the 5’ 10” unicorn we all saw last season he’s only coming out for injury.

    4. if otoh Taylor stumbles, we go back to Fitz who has proven he doesn’t take benching personally.

    4. the key is that somehow we MUST find out this season, before the 2022 draft, just what we have in Taylor Heinicke.

    5. the only way to do that is to play him during the regular season.

    Well said.

Henceforth, Taylor H shall be known as "The Unicorn."

You’re joking but I’m legit thinking this is one of those weird, unexplainable situations in sports. I don’t know how he does it but he wins. Makes no sense. He is a living breathing sports cliche. He is the embodiment of “finds a way”. I don’t want him starting in 2021 but it is uncanny

More seriously, the only partial explanation I can think of is that Alex Smith is very good at checking out of passing plays that aren't going to work to running plays that pick up a few yards. That wouldn't show up on his stats, but it would increase the team's chances of winning. Sadly, I'm too lazy to do any follow-up research to confirm or deny this possibility.

Pretty easy, actually. The defense believes that Smith gives them a chance to win. That absolutely elevates their play.

plus they seem to like him. So when he makes a mistake they are much more willing to look beyond it and have his back than they are to get pissed off that the guy keeps screwing up.

If that's the case, it's much more important to have a QB who the other players like and respect than one who plays well. This has the potential to revolutionize drafting.

Well he had one bad game with three picks where he was throwing it all over the field. Not a good game from him. Take that away and he’s been pretty responsible. I know at least one of the other picks wasn’t on him.

That isn't really my point. You just can't explain the difference between 10-5 and 6-24 by looking at what Alex Smith is doing on the field.

For lack of a better theory, I'm staying with "beams waves of electrostatic despair into the brains of opposing players and coaches" for now.

Yeah not only has Alex Smith gotten through a horrific injury he now apparently has the power to make Chase Young a force, he was the guy behind all the plays Sweat is making as well. With such power I now understand the love for the guy.

You're referring to the same Chase Young and Montez Sweat who were also playing when Haskins was the QB?

I agree, he hasn't played all that well.   I think a big part of it is protecting the football and not making boneheaded plays.  Winning the field position battle.  And I don't think there is any doubt that players in the huddle would be more confident with Alex smith than dwayne haskins.  Probably a variety of little things that together make a huge difference, as the numbers prove.

Smith hasn't even protected the ball all that well (6 picks in 7 games). If there's an explanation for this that doesn't involve the supernatural, I haven't seen it.
