August 7th coverage of Redskins Training Camp

Training camp emergency rain procedure: If you need it and, like me, are a cheapskate and don't want to pay for rain-gear, find a stash of the big black trash bags near one of the garbage cans. In the past, they've kept a few rolled up, and close by, for when they empty the trash. Fashion yourself a stylish emergency poncho out of one. You'll stun, dazzle, and amaze the paparazzi as you hit the green carpet in your custom, cutting-edge, hand-made polyethylene poncho, and be the envy of all the soaking wet people around you.

Fortunately, the rain held off until around 10:00 pm tonight.

It was pouring here in Richmond about an hour ago. It is more of a moderate rain now with more heavy rain on the way.

Don't know if that will affect tomorrow's walk-through or not.

ES Coverage Redskins vs Steelers (Audio & Photos)

Can't wait for the game to start. :)

For me, at least for tonight, I am not too worried about establishing a strong running game. Offense 101 tells you to attack a defense at its weakest and to use where you are your strongest. For the Steelers, their secondary is the weak point, and the Redskins' strength is their passing game.

If the Redskins can get a strong running game going, then great. However, the Steelers had a good run defense last season, and it is pointless for the Redskins to try and batter up against it, only to keep putting themselves into 3rd-and-long situations if their run game isn't working. They will probably use a short passing game to the RBs in place of a running game to keep the drive moving if there are no running lanes.

Do what they did best in the second half of last season, and they can win this game. :)

Pre Season Week 1 - Redskins at Falcons

So, I got home from work, put the game on and watched maybe the 1st quarter before falling asleep, lol.

By the looks of it, though, Kirk and the first team defense looked good and everything else was terrible.

I'm ok with that.... for now. I don't want to see this type of play linger, preseason or not.

    No, everything else wasn't terrible.

Cravens was great. Showed why so many are excited about his potential. I don't think it is hyperbole to say that Sean Taylor is the only other defensive player I remember to have a more explosive preseason debut.

Cravens didn't come out of the gate like Taylor, but he came out fast. :)

There were other good individual efforts that you would like.

As I said in other threads, it is clear the Falcons game planned for this game, and we did not. They also kept many of their starters in for much of the first half. Whereas the Redskins had theirs out (offense and defense) after about 7 plays.

I suggest you watch the whole game when you get the chance, and you will get a better idea. :)

Pre Season Week 1 - Redskins at Falcons

It's early, but the first evidence of how well the Skins "NT" point of defense (first string) will hold up versus the run, doesn't inspire confidence.

Granted the Falcons have a great center, but the decision to rely primarily on Golston for the NT run-blocking role didn't seem to be paying off ...this particular night.

Their top RB Freeman only had 9 yards on 5 carries.

They finished with only 79 yards rushing. Where did they not hold up? If by "hold up" you mean stop EVERY SINGLE  running play up the middle cold, then you want perfection. So you will be disappointed because not even the best rush defenses can do that.

Redskins & Falcons Ten Longest Plays

    DC9 writes:

Penalties - holy **** penalties.  Have to tidy that up.  Some of them were inexcusable things, too.

Yep. Some of the penalties were the typical young guys and rookies making mistakes in a preseason game variety.

    Some were not.

Phillips - I don't like singling out younger players here, but that kid put himself squarely behind the 8-ball with his performance in coverage and his penalties.

Dunbar, too. They are going to play themselves off this team with performances like that.

Lichtenseiger - If we have a weakness on the starting offense, it's going to be him.  Hopefully Long can take over once Lauvao is ready to move back up.

In fairness to him, I'm going to wait till we get the left side of our line back on the field together (Williams and Lauvao). :)

Safety position - difficult to tell how poorly they played or how well with Atlanta gameplanning and us just looking at other things, but Bruton and Nacho need to be better.  Thought DeAngelo had a decent game.

Funny thing is, Keim thought Nacho did great last night. :) Maybe he was actually looking at someone else.

We were very vanilla last night, they were not.  I'd be willing to write this one off as Kyle's "getting even" game.

This is the big thing I tried to impart on people in the game day thread last night. It was clear the Falcons were out to win the game (otherwise, why throw six passes downfield like a playoff berth is on the line?).

Our starting offense only played about 8 snaps. Our starting defense just two 3-and-out drives. Some of their starters played well into the second quarter (maybe longer).

If this was Kyle "getting even" then let him enjoy his hollow victory. :)
