Redskins release LB Mike Barrow and S Andre Lott

July 30, 2005

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- Veteran linebacker Mike Barrow was waived Saturday by the Washington Redskins, and safety Andre Lott was let go after agreeing to an injury settlement with the team.

The 35-year-old Barrow never played a down for the Redskins after signing a six-year, $11.6 million contract a year ago as a free agent from the New York Giants. He was bothered all season by acute tendinitis in his left knee and was placed on injured reserve in late November.

By cutting Barrow, the Redskins will save about $1.7 million under this year's salary cap, clearing more than enough room to sign first-round picks Carlos Rogers and Jason Campbell. However, Barrow will count $1.67 million against the 2006 cap.

Barrow had a shot at getting his job back this year after his replacement at middle linebacker, Antonio Pierce, left to sign with Barrow's old team, the Giants. But Barrow's slow recovery this spring forced to Redskins to consider other options, including Lemar Marshall and Warrick Holdman, as they prepare to open training camp Monday.

Lott, a fifth-round pick in the 2002 draft, suffered a hairline tibia fracture on the last day of the June 17-19 minicamp. He also missed most of last season with a torn pectoral muscle.

Clifton Smith is 255 and has good lateral speed. It will be interesting to see if he emerges in camp and the preseason. Williams has shown that he will play ANY player that he thinks can help the team win. He doesn't start players that continue to be unproductive as so many teams do, not allowing younger guys to get on the field.
