Arrington, Portis Placed On IR

Linebacker LaVar Arrington has been placed on the Redskins' injured reserve list on Wednesday, officially ending his season. The three-time Pro Bowl linebacker played in four games this season after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery to repair a lateral meniscus injury on Sept. 24.

As expected, running back Clinton Portis and cornerback Ade Jimoh were also placed on injured reserve on Wednesday.

For Arrington, his injury-plagued season has been one of frustration. He began the season on a promising note, playing in the opener against Tampa Bay and recording eight tackles and one sack of Bucs' quarterback Brad Johnson. The sack came on the last play of the game and helped secure a 16-10 win.

Arrington logged seven more tackles the following week against the New York Giants, but he continued to experience soreness in his knee, leading to his surgery prior to the Week 3 game against Dallas.

Third-year linebacker Lemar Marshall filled in for Arrington in the starting lineup and has been a solid performer on the NFL's No. 2-ranked defense. He has registered 75 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble this season.

Arrington was expected to come back from the surgery in late October but he suffered a setback during a practice and was sidelined for another five weeks.

Arrington finally returned to action for the Dec. 18 game against San Francisco. He played in a limited role against the 49ers and the Week 16 game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Following Sunday's game at Dallas, Arrington reported some knee soreness. Team officials said he had developed minor tendonitis in the knee.

For the season, Arrington had 18 tackles (10 solo) and one sack.

Portis sustained a bruised shoulder in last Sunday's game against Dallas and left the game in the third quarter. Jimoh sustained a sprained ankle on a special teams play in the fourth quarter.
