Redskins Consider Herock for Scouting Post

Stymied in his efforts to fill the remaining key vacancies on his scouting staff, Washington Redskins coach Marty Schottenheimer will turn to the name that he strongly considered for the top personnel job with the team.

Well, at least the last name.

In an incredible irony, Schottenheimer will meet with Shaun Herock about the position of director of college scouting, with the interview scheduled for sometime this week. Herock is the youngest son of longtime NFL personnel chief Ken Herock, who finished as runner-up to John Schneider for the personnel director post. Shaun Herock currently is assistant director of college scouting for the Green Bay Packers.

Schottenheimer also is expected to interview Cleveland Browns scout Tom Dimitroff for the post.

Since hiring Schneider on May 29, a move first reported by SportsLine.com, the Redskins have had problems securing department heads for both pro and college scouting. The Chicago Bears recently denied Washington permission to interview Scott Campbell, their team's director of pro scouting. And Schottenheimer has likewise been blocked from pursuing current Seattle director of college scouting Scott McCloughan.

Schneider was hired from the Seahawks to replace former personnel director Vinny Cerrato, who was fired in January..

Campbell and McCloughan were strongly recommended to Schottenheimer by Ken Herock during his interview for the personnel director's job, as was his son.

Shaun Herock, 30, is an emerging star in the college scouting arena and recently was promoted by the Packers. The team's Midwest regional scout for the past seven seasons, Herock signed a new three-year contract last month.

The Redskins scouting department is undergoing a major overhaul. Of the scouts only the staff from the 2000 season, only one has been retained.

Why isn't Schneider bringing these guys in instead of Marty? Won't they be working under him?

I thought that Schneider would be able to bring in his own people, but implicit in that article is that Marty has retained the responsibility for himself.
