Short Gets Offer From Redskins

Giants Linebacker In Mix With Others

By Nunyo Demasio

The Washington Redskins have made an offer to New York Giants linebacker Brandon Short, according to a source familiar with the situation, after the free agent spent two days at Redskins Park this week.

Carolina Panthers linebacker Greg Favors is mulling the same offer from the Redskins, said another source, although the Jacksonville Jaguars are also trying to sign him.

Chicago Bears linebacker Warrick Holdman is scheduled for a Monday visit at Redskins Park, and the club has expressed an interest in Giants linebacker Michael Barrow, whose asking price appears to be too steep. Regardless, Washington is expected to sign only one linebacker among the group as a reserve.

Washington's biggest priority in free agency remains obtaining another cornerback. Yesterday, the Redskins lost out on cornerback Jerametrius Butler after the St. Louis Rams matched a six-year, $15 million offer sheet on their restricted free agent.

According to a source who requested anonymity, the Redskins have targeted Giants cornerback Ralph Brown, who is scheduled for a Monday visit. The 5-foot-10, 185-pounder has played all four NFL seasons with the Giants. Redskins defensive backs coach DeWayne Walker was New York's secondary coach the previous two seasons. Brown started out as a nickel back last season behind talented cornerbacks Will Allen and Will Peterson before being pressed into a starting role because of injuries.

But Brown, who had two interceptions last season, suffered a shoulder injuries, twice knocking him out the lineup. Brown turned down a minimum offer from New York to return in the 2004 season.

Washington's main consolation in losing Butler is that room under the salary cap rises to roughly $3 million, enough for another quality free agent. According to sources who requested anonymity, the Redskins have contacted Giants defensive end Kenny Holmes, although a visit hasn't been scheduled. Last season, the Holmes collected 51/2 sacks in nine games before ending his season after minor knee surgery on Nov. 15. The Redskins have been seeking a pass-rush specialist in free agency.

Yesterday, the Redskins re-signed safety Todd Franz and linebacker Lemar Marshall.

Kenny Holmes didn't do well his first year with the Giants but started to improve his second. The season for him was shortened by injuries. He was better at stopping the run. A lot of his sacks were QB's being forced into him as they were trying to avoid Strahan and Hamilton. But he is definitely solid against the run.

Ralph Brown was the Giants third corner behind the Will's. He made a couple of good plays last year but also was caught out of position several times. Definitely not starting material but a solid third corner who has more experience now.

Barrow played a solid year last year. I can't deny that. But he is losing a step or two. You can see that in his play. A lot of the tackles he made were five yards behind the line of scrimmage. He did have some highlight tackles at or behind the line but you could count them on one hand. If the Skins are looking at him as a backup, you can't have a more solid backup in the league. I just don't think he is willing to take that role. And he is certainly not going to take backup money.

Brandon Short is an intriguing possibility, one I wish the Giants would still consider bringing back. The problem is, I would be willing to bet he is asking for too much money and doesn't want a backup role either. He isn't the speediest of LB's but he has explosiveness on blitzes. Not a great cover LB for TE's and RB's out of the backfield. There were many instances where he was too far off of the man he was covering. This is why you saw a lot of screens and dump passes very successful against the Giants last year. And I am sure that was seen by Coughlin on tapes of games from last year. Even with that, I love him just for his blitzing ability alone. He finds the hole to get through and gets to the QB if he has the smallest of lanes. He is maybe a little better than average against the run. Just as Barrow, if you get him for a backup or spot duty LB, he will be great. As a starter, he is still very raw and who knows if he will ever fully develop.

Griffin, not worth an $8.3 million dollar signing bonus. And definitely not worth a contract over $30 million. He hasn't gotten a pass rush since his rookie year. He always misses two or three games because of ankle injuries. Can stop the run right at him but that is pretty much it based on these last several years. Oh wait, what am I doing? You already signed him. Sorry, my bad. :D

Kind of died in NY.

Are you kidding me? What are you basing that on? Kenny Holmes has been a TERRIBLE bust since he's entered the NFL (drafted right after kenard lang was drafted that year).

He is awful. He's good for about 4 sacks a year. The Redskins go after these terrible ends and think they'll give them something (Peppi Zellner = zero, Renaldo Wynn=zero, Philip Daniels=will be a zero, Kenny Holmes=horrible zero)

I wouldnt say Holmes has nothing left because that would imply he *had* something at point in the NFL. He's bad a below average DE with no pass rush skill whatsoever for a while now.

I'd rather have LaDairius Jackson and I'm serious.

Tom, lets not also forget that these x giant players who played under fasselhead, and quit will now PLAY HARD for COACH JOE JACKSON GIBBS, and won't quit.[/Quit]

That could very well be true but do you really want a guy on your team who did quit on his coach and team? That shows a huge selfish side. It is like they said, "Well, we aren't going anywhere so why should I even try?" I am glad the Giants are weeding these kinds of guys out and bringing in dedicated, hard working guys like Green and Emmons.

And no, I don't miss Griffin. These last two years, you hardly even knew he was there.

Only one problem Tom, if we didn't have anyone on our team who didn't quit on their coach we might not be able to field a team after the Spurrier experiment.

the Giants had a poor pass defense the past couple of years, I find it surprising that we are looking at any of their players, least of all guys that were backups in NY.

Kenny Holmes is in a different situation. He has put up legitimate numbers in the past, but has had a couple of campaigns where he disappeared which is a concern. He is also over 30.

But Tom is right that from the perspective of getting to the QB, he is an improvement over Wynn and Daniels.

Daniles, though, appears to be a player people are underestimating. He had 9 sacks in 2001 and is solid against the run. If we can match him with a rusher on the other side with Wynn sliding to DT or playing the #3 end spot, the Skins will be looking good.
