Jackson: Offense Has Adapted to Changes

12/13/2003

From the Sidelines

With Hue Jackson

In Sunday's game against Dallas, the Redskins will field an offense with five backups in starting roles—including the quarterback, tailback and left tackle positions. The Redskins weathered the changes last week in a 20-7 win over the New York Giants, but the unit will face a sterner test against Dallas’s top-ranked defense. Offensive coordinator Hue Jackson spoke with Redskins.com as the team prepared for the Week 14 game against the Cowbots:

Q: How has the offense been able to adjust to the various lineup changes during the course of the season?

A: “You just keep playing. I think that’s a testament to head coach Steve Spurrier and the position coaches here. They’ve done a good job preparing players so that when their time comes, they’re ready to play. We’ve found ways in the last few games to compete and—in the case of last week—to win one. We have mixed and matched in a lot of different areas. We hope to not have that happen, but it’s good to know that you do have some players who can step in.”

Q: How difficult is it to keep an offensive rhythm given all the personnel changes?

A: “There’s no question it’s difficult. We’d like to stay in a very even rhythm. Maybe one player runs a route different than a starter or maybe one lineman understands the protection a little bit different than a starter. There are a lot of little details that go on that don’t allow you to have the execution that you want. But we can’t worry about it at this level. For the most part, our players have risen to the challenge.”

Q: Even more difficult, considering you're going up against Dallas’s top-ranked defense…

A: “You can’t worry about that. That’s life in the NFL. It’s like that sometimes. I think our players understand this is a tremendous challenge, I think our coaching staff understands this is a tremendous challenge, and on you go. That’s why we do this. It’s a challenge every week. We can’t worry about the guys that are injured—we want to see them get well and get back on the field—but all we can worry about are the guys that are ready to play.”

Q: We all know Dallas is going to blitz until the Redskins prove they can stop it. What are some ways for you to make the Cowboys pay for blitzing:

A: “There are two ways to beat the blitz: You run the ball against it, find a crease and run the ball a long way. Or you block them and throw the ball downfield. I think we have tremendously improved in pass protection since the last Dallas game.”

Q: Is there one or two players or is it the entire team who’s responsible for recognizing where the blitz is coming from?

A: “Everybody has a responsibility on every play. The difference will be those guys up on the line making sure they are assignment-sure.”

Hue Jackson is in his first season as offensive coordinator with the Redskins after serving two years as running backs coach. He previously spent four years as offensive coordinator at USC. Jackson is regarded by players as a high-energy, hands-on teacher and motivator. Look for his Q&A column every week on Redskins.com
