Redskins, Dolphins Underway

MIAMI -- Patrick Ramsey started the game for the Redskins, but was injured on Washington's second possession. The Redskins trail, 7-6, in the second quarter.

Ramsey may return, according to TV reports. He was replaced by Tim Hasselbeck on Washington's third series and engineered a nice drive, getting the Redskins to the Miami 13 before stalling. John Hall then hit his second field goal of the game, this one from 31 yards.

The Dolphins jumped out front early, scoring on their third offensive play. Brian Griese hit James McKnight for an 80-yard touchdown down the left sideline. David Terrell went for an interception but missed and McKnight went untouched into the end zone.

Ramsey started but Washington had to punt on its first possession.

Terrell redeemed himself on Miami's next possession when he picked off a Griese pass and returned the ball to Miami's 8.

Ramsey was hurt two plays later when he was slammed to the turf by defensive end Jason Taylor. John Hall hit a 28-yard field goal on the next play.

Bruce Smith tied the NFL career sacks record Sunday night, increasing his total to 198 when he and Renaldo Wynn dropped Griese for a 9-yard loss in the first quarter.

Smith was credited with a half-sack, tying him with Reggie White, who played for Philadelphia and Green Bay.

After Smith and Wynn sandwiched Griese, Smith tossed the game ball to the Washington sideline for a souvenir. Griese became the 72nd quarterback Smith has sacked.

Hasselbeck threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Laveranues Coles and led the Redskins on a 12-play, 80-yard drive toward the end of the first half. Trung Canidate scored from two yards out to give the Redskins a 20-7 advantage. Hasselbeck is 11 of 14 for 106 yards after coming in on Washington's second posession after Ramsey was slammed to the turf on an incomplete pass. He may return, according to TV reports.

Hasselbeck threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Laveranues Coles and led the Redskins on a 12-play, 80-yard drive toward the end of the first half. Trung Canidate scored from two yards out to give the Redskins a 20-7 advantage in the first half. Hasselbeck was 11 of 14 for 106 yards in the first half after coming in on Washington's second possession after Ramsey was slammed to the turf on an incomplete pass.

The Dolphins made a quarterback change, too. Brian Griese was replaced by Jay Fiedler at the start of the fourth quarter and he drove the Dolphins into field goal range. On third and 15 from the Washington 19, Ifeanyi Ohalete was called for pass interference in the end zone, putting the ball at the Washington 1. The Redskins held for three plays, but Ricky Williams dove in on fourth and 1 to pull Miami within six points, 23-17, with 10 minutes left.

Rashad Bauman picked off a Griese pass at the Redskins 2 to stop a Miami drive in the third quarter. The Redskins eventually had to punt but the ball was fumbled by Kendall Newson at the Miami 16 and recovered by Zeron Flemister.
