Miami Dolphins assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Norv Turner was the Washington Redskins head coach from 1994-2000… Dolphins WR Derrius Thompson spent the last four seasons in Washington… Miami QB Sage Rosenfels spent the 2001 season playing for the Redskins after the team drafted him the fourth round that year… P Matt Turk was a Pro Bowler during his first three seasons playing with the Redskins from 1996-98 before playing his final season there in 1999. Turk played with Redskins K John Hall, RB/KR Chad Morton, OL Randy Thomas and WR Laveraneus Coles for the New York Jets in 2002… Miami G Brad Bedell went to training camp with Washington this season and was on the team’s practice squad before signing with the Dolphins in week 11…

Redskins Head Coach Steve Spurrier spent one week in the Dolphins’ training camp in 1977 before embarking on his coaching career. He was a Hesiman Trophy winning quarterback at the University of Florida and then served as the head coach at his alma mater for 12 seasons, from 1990-2001. For all but Spurrier’s final year there, as well as the 1987-1989 seasons at Duke, Dolphins linebackers coach Bob Sanders was on his staff. Dolphins defensive coordinator Jim Bates also coached under Spurrier in 1990 as defensive coordinator/secondary coach. Redskins outside linebackers coach Jim Collins (1990-2001), defensive coordinator George Edwards (1991-92), tight ends coach Lawson Holland (1995-2001), head conditioning coach Mark Smith (1998-01), wide receivers coach Steve Spurrier, Jr. (1994-98) and assistant offensive line coach John Hunt (1989-91, 99-01) also coached at Florida. Redskins director of football operations Jamie Speronis spent his entire professional career at Florida before going to Washington with Spurrier, including his last six years (1996-01) as director of football administration. Collins coached and Edwards and Spurrier Jr. played at Duke while Sanders was in Durham. Washington Redskins DT Jermaine Haley played the last three seasons with Miami after the team selected him in the seventh round of the 1999 draft… T Brandon Winey was a Dolphins’ sixth-round selection in 2001 and spent the first three months of the season on the team’s practice squad… Redskins OL/LS Ethan Albright spent most of the 1994 season on the Dolphins’ practice squad after signing with the club as an undrafted free agent. He played ten games for Miami in 1995 before being injured… Washington defensive line coach Robert Nunn (2000-02) spent three seasons as a Dolphins’ assistant. Nunn joined Jim Bates at the University of Tennessee in 1989, where both were defensive assistants. Nunn played at Oklahoma State (1983-84, 85-86) for former Dolphins head coach Jimmy Johnson, tight ends coach Pat Jones and offensive line coach Tony Wise. Bates coached the Dallas Cowboys (1993-99) while Dolphins WR James McKnight (1999-00) and Redskins T Brandon Noble and DE Peppi Zellner (1999-02) played together there (1999-02)… Redskins offensive line coach Kim Helton joined the Miami Dolphins for the 1993 offseason before he was named head coach at the University of Houston. Previously, Helton played (1967-70) and coached (1972-78) at the University of Florida, where he was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2000. Helton then moved onto the University of Miami (1980-82) where he served as offensive coordinator… Washington assistant athletic trainer/physical therapist Larry Hess was a Dolphins training camp intern from 1998-2000, while serving as the head athletic trainer at Dunbar High School in Fort Myers. He has a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University, where he currently sits on the school’s Athletic Trainers Program Advisory Board… Redskins WR Taylor Jacobs played at Florida from 1999-02… Dolphins DE Jay Williams played at Wake Forest (1990-03) while Lawson Holland (1988-91) was on the Demon Deacons’ coaching staff. Holland (1992-94) then moved on to Oklahoma State University where he worked with Miami special teams coach Keith Armstrong (1990-92) and Pat Jones (1979-94), who was the Cowboys’ head coach. During his playing days, Spurrier (1967-75) teamed with Dolphins defensive backs coach Mel Phillips (1966-77) for the San Francisco 49ers. Washington quarterbacks coach Noah Brindise, a Ft. Myers, Fla. resident, played quarterback at Florida from 1995-97 before becoming a graduate assistant coach there from 1999-01… Washington LB Jessie Armstead attended the University of Miami from 1989-92… Laveranues Coles (1996-00) played with Miami RB Travis Minor (1997-00) at Florida State University and Miami assistant special teams/offensive coach Bernie Parmalee for the New York Jets in 2000. John Hall and Randy Thomas also joined Parmalee from 1999-00 in New York…

Redskins defensive assistant/special teams coach DeChon Burns played with Dolphins LB Junior Seau at the University of Southern California from 1988-89. During Seau’s (1990-2002) and Norv Turner’s (2001) time in San Diego, Redskins head strength coach John Hastings (1990-01) was with the Chargers… Washington defensive backs coach George Catavolos (1984-93, 98-01) held the same position in Indianapolis while Miami DT Larry Chester (1998-00) was a Colt. During Catavolos’ first stint with the team, Dolphins assistant athletic trainer Troy Maurer was an intern in 1989. Catavolos (1995-97) also coached the defensive backs in Carolina while Dolphins DT Jeff Zgonina was with the club (1995). Chester (1998-00) and Zgonina (2000) teamed with Redskins DT Bernard Holsy (2000) and OL Larry Moore (1998-01) in Indianapolis. Zgonina (1997, 99-02) also played with Redskins S Matt Bowen (2000) and RB Trung Canidate (2000-02) in St. Louis. Holsy played with Dolphins CB Terrell Buckley in New England last year. Washington TE Byron Chamberlain (1995-00), Lennie Friedman (1999-02) and DT Lionel Dalton (2002) played in Denver with Buckley (2000) and Dolphins QB Brian Griese (98-02). Griese (1994-97) and Miami LB Tommy Hendricks (1996-99) played with Washington T Jon Jansen (1996-99) at the University of Michigan. When Zgonina was with the St. Louis Rams (1997, 99-02), Redskins assistant defensive line coach Ken Clarke held a similar post with the team. Clarke (1994) was joined by Miami assistant strength and conditioning coach Brad Roll (1993-95) in Tampa Bay. Redskins Vice President of Football Operations Vinny Cerrato was the University of Notre Dame’s football recruiting coordinator from 1986-90, where he landed Dolphins C Tim Ruddy. Cerrato was the Bears’ Director of Pro Scouting and Redskins area scout Shemy Schembechler was the Bears’ Midwest BLESTO scout in 2000 when Miami Director of Pro Personnel George Paton was Chicago’s assistant director of pro personnel. Dolphins S Shawn Wooden played for the club that season. As a graduate recruiting coordinator at the University of Michigan, Schembechler assisted in the signing of Griese. Wooden (1991, 93-95) played with Washington DE Renaldo Wynn at Notre Dame (1993-96). Wynn and Redskins P Bryan Barker played with Miami QB Jay Fiedler in Jacksonville in 1999. Fiedler and Barker were also teammates in Philadelphia in 1994. Redskins offensive coordinator Hue Jackson coached the running backs, wide receivers and special teams for the London Monarchs in 1991 while Dolphins offensive quality control/quarterbacks coach Judd Garrett played for the team. Jackson interned with the Los Angeles Rams in 1990 when Norv Turner was the team’s receivers/tight ends coach. Washington head athletic trainer Dean Kleinschmidt held the same post in New Orleans from 1971-2001, where he worked with Garrett and Dolphins RB Ricky Williams (1999-2001), S Sammy Knight (1997-02), President Eddie Jones (1968-85) and Director of Media Relations Neal Gulkis (1988-96). Washington DB Todd Franz (2000), LB Kevin Mitchell (1998-99), RB/KR Chad Morton (2000) and T Mitch White (2001) also played for the Saints. Knight (1993-96) played with Morton (1999-99) and Redskins DT Darrell Russell (1994-96) at USC. Mitchell (1991-94) played with Dolphins K Olindo Mare (1994-95) at Syracuse University. Redskins DT Martin Chase (2000-02) teamed with Williams and Knight (1997-02) in New Orleans. Previously, Chase (1999) and Washington FB Patrick Johnson (1998-02) were Baltimore Ravens along olphins FB Obafemi Ayanbadejo (1999-01) and DE Rob Burnett (1996-01), while Miami assistant athletic trainer/director of rehabilitation Ben Westby was on the team’s staff. Washington special assistant to personnel Foge Fazio coached in Minnesota (1995-99) while Obafemi Ayanbadejo (1998-99) and Jay Fiedler (1998) played for the Vikings. Fazio coached at the University of Pittsburgh (1969-72) while Miami Head Coach Dave Wannstedt (1971-73) played for the Panthers… Dean Kleinschmidt’s assistant, Eric Steward, began as a student athletic trainer in Buffalo (1996-97) while Ethan Albright (1996-00) Buffalo DE Bruce Smith (1985-02) and Miami G Jamie Nails (1997-2000) were with the Bills. Steward was Syracuse’s graduate assistant athletic trainer from 1998-00 where he worked with Dolphins LB Morlon Greenwood (1997-00) and FB Rob Konrad (1995-98)… Washington CB Fred Smoot (1999-01) played at Mississippi State with Dolphins TE Donald Lee (1999-02)… Redskins rookie QB Gilbran Hamdan played with Dolphins DE Adewale Ogunleye at Indiana University in 1999… Redskins rookie brothers Chris and Nic Clemons played with Dolphins TE Randy McMichael at the University of Georgia (1999-01).
