TK
http://redskins.com/story.asp?ContentID=12251 Game Preview: Redskins vs. Panthers, Week 10 11/13/2003 The Redskins (3-5) travels to Ericsson Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. to play the Carolina Panthers (7-2) this Sunday for Washington’s second consecutive game against a team in first place in their division. Game time is 1 p.m. EST. The Redskins and head coach Steve Spurrier are coming off a 27-20 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, ending their four-game losing streak in dramatic fashion with a Rod Gardner touchdown pass to Trung Canidate in the final seconds. Carolina, led by second-year head coach John Fox, is in first place in the NFC South by three games over Tampa Bay and New Orleans. The Panthers came from behind to defeat the Buccaneers 27-24 last Sunday after Tampa Bay had scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to take the lead. But Jake Delhomme rallied the Panthers with less than one minute in the game, capping a 78-yard drive with a 5-yard pass to Steve Smith. The Redskins and Panthers have an interesting—albeit short—history. The two teams have played six times in the regular season since 1995, with Redskins winning all six times. The meetings have usually been close, tough contests: Five of the six game have been decided by three points or less. Washington won the last game 17-14 on Oct. 21, 2001, thanks in part to Rod Gardner’s 208 receiving yards and LaVar Arrington’s memorable 67-yard interception return. The Redskins and Panthers played in the preseason, with Carolina winning 20-0 at Ericsson Stadium. Stephen Davis, the longtime Redskin who signed with the Panthers last offseason and is sure to be a central figure in this Sunday's game, rushed for 74 yards on seven carries in a quarter of action. Quote of the Week “I think we have a bit of confidence coming off the Seattle win. I don’t think we ever really doubted ourselves, but it’s just at the same time we don’t want to get overconfident just because we did beat a good team in Seattle.”– Quarterback Patrick Ramsey Redskins Rankings Overall Offense 22nd (last week: 22nd) Rush Offense 20th (21st) Pass Offense 14th (17th Overall Defense 26th (25th Rush Defense 26th (26th) Pass Defense 22nd (19th) Panthers Rankings Overall Offense 11th (last week: 13th) Rush Offense 3rd (2nd) Pass Offense 27th (29th) Overall Defense 24th (22nd) Rush Defense 13th (13th) Pass Defense 25th (22nd) 22 Players to Watch Redskins Offense Patrick Ramsey, QB 12 TDs, 8 Int.; 2,009 pass yards Laveranues Coles, WR 51 receptions, 783 yards, 3 TDs Rock Cartwright, RB 155 yards rushing, 4.3 yards per carry Rod Gardner, WR 8 catches, 81 yards last week Jon Jansen, RT First matchup vs. Julius Peppers Panthers Defense Julius Peppers, DE 12 sacks as a rookie last year Mike Rucker League-high 11 sacks Will Witherspoon 64 tackles, 1 INT return for TD Ricky Manning, CB 2 INTs for rookie 3rd-rounder Mike Minter, S Team-high 69 tackles Panthers Offense Jake Delhomme, QB 57.8% completion rate; 10 TDs, 8 INTs Stephen Davis, RB 992 rushing yards, 5.1 ypc average DeShaun Foster, RB 286 rushing yards, 4.3 ypc average Steve Smith, WR 52 catches, 645 yards, 5 TDs Jordan Gross, RT Rookie matched up with Bruce Smith Redskins Defense Bruce Smith, DE 1 sack shy of NFL record LaVar Arrington, LB 76 tackles, 4 forced fumbles Jeremiah Trotter, LB 64 tackles, 1 INT Matt Bowen, S 52 tackles, 2 INTs Champ Bailey, CB Team-high 9 passes defensed Special Teams Redskins: John Hall, K 4 FGs of 50+ yards Panthers: John Kasay, K 20-for-20 on FG attempts
