REDSKINS 27, SEAHAWKS 20

Play of the game

The Redskins won on a gadget play that was called at the right time and in the right situation.

The score was 20-20 with 2:02 left in the fourth quarter. The Redskins faced a third-and-5 at the Seahawks' 10-yard line. Initially, the Redskins were going to go with a conservative call and take a field goal from John Hall. But the Seahawks called a timeout, and Redskins coach Steve Spurrier decided his team needed a touchdown to put the game away.

Quarterback Patrick Ramsey took the snap, stood and threw what to the Seahawks looked to be a long pass to the sidelines. But Gardner was behind Ramsey, and the toss was a lateral. As the defense raced after Gardner, running back Trung Canidate slipped out of the backfield and into the right corner of the end zone. Gardner, a former high school quarterback, lofted a perfect spiral that fell into the hands of Canidate.

Scoring drives

FIRST QUARTER

Washington 3, Seattle 0, 12:26 - The Seahawks won the toss, elected to receiver and return man Maurice Morris fumbled the kickoff. Redskins special-teams player David Terrell recovered at the 18. The Redskins used six plays to move to the Seahawks' 2 but had to settle for a 20-yard field goal by Hall on the seventh play.

Seattle 7, Washington 3, 10:35 - This time Morris had a good return, and the Redskins were penalized 15 yards at the end of the run for a personal foul on Terrell. He drew the unusual penalty, for a defender, of "blocking low." That put the Seahawks on the Redskins' 42. They moved to the 32, then quarterback Matt Hasselbeck was penalized 10 yards for intentional grounding. On second and 20 from the 42, Hasselbeck threw a bomb for wide receiver Koren Robinson. Robinson outmaneuvered Redskins cornerback Champ Bailey to make the reception at the 5. On the next play, Hasselbeck passed to wide receiver Bobby Engram, who was wide open in the end zone.

Seattle 14, Washington 3, 1:36 - The Seahawks put together a 14-play, 90-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Shaun Alexander. The Seahawks converted three third-down plays in the drive. On third and 8 from the Seattle 30, Hasselbeck passed to Engram for 14 yards. On third and 1 at the Redskins' 47, Alexander ran for 3. On third and 10 from the Redskins' 14, fullback Mack Strong took a screen pass 13 yards to set up Alexander's touchdown run.

SECOND QUARTER

Seattle 14, Washington 10, 5:54 - The Redskins caught two big breaks on this possession. Actually, it was two possessions in one. An interception by Seahawks safety Damien Robinson was returned to the Redskins' 2, where wide receiver Laveranues Coles knocked the ball from Robinson's hands and into the end zone. Redskins guard Randy Thomas fell on the ball, giving the Redskins a touchback. Spurrier called Coles' play as big as any in the game. That gave the Redskins the ball on the 20 with a fresh set of downs. They put together an 11-play, 80-yard touchdown drive. Another interception, this one by cornerback Shawn Springs was waved off because of a pass- interference penalty on Springs. The Redskins moved downfield on a combination of decent gains running and short gains on quick passes. When the Redskins reached the Seahawks' 15, Ramsey took a deep drop and threw a touchdown pass to Coles.

Seattle 17, Washington 10, 2:07 - The Seahawks started with good field position at the Washington 45 when Redskins cornerback Ade Jimoh was penalized 15 yards for pushing return man Morris when he was well out of bounds. From there, the Seahawks moved to the Redskins' 9 and settled for a 27-yard field goal by Josh Brown. The biggest play in the drive was a 16-yard pass from Hasselbeck to tight end Itula Mili, which moved the Seahawks to the Redskins' 15.

Seattle 17, Washington 17, :06 - The Redskins used their two-minute offense to cover 66 yards in seven plays and use 2:01 of the final 2:07 of the half to get the game-tying touchdown. The biggest play in the drive was a 31-yard pass from Ramsey to Coles that put the Redskins on the Seattle 18. On second and 6 from the 14, Ramsey drilled a touchdown pass into the hands of Gardner. Gardner made the catch despite drawing a pass-interference penalty from Springs.

THIRD QUARTER

Washington 20, Seattle 17, 8:35 - Coles began the drive by gaining 14 yards on an end-around on first down, putting the Redskins on the Seattle 32. The Redskins moved to the Seattle 16 before the drive stalled, and Hall kicked a 34-yard field goal.

FOURTH QUARTER

Washington 20, Seattle 20, 9:59 - The Seahawks got out of a deep hole, moving from their 4 to the Redskins' 30. Then, Brown kicked a 48-yard field goal. Alexander gave the Seahawks a kick-start when he gained 14 yards on the first play of the drive. Hasselbeck passed for 24 yards to Engram, which put the Seahawks at the 50. Redskins defensive end Bruce Smith had a sack on the drive, giving him 197½ for his career. He is one-half sack from tying Reggie White for the career record.

Washington 27, Seattle 20, 1:57 - Gardner had a 20-yard reception and a 10-yard touchdown pass in the Redskins' 85-yard touchdown drive. Rock Cartwright kept the drive moving with runs of 9, 2, 5 and 21 yards. On the touchdown play, Ramsey took the snap, stood and threw an overhand lateral to Gardner, who threw to Canidate, who was uncovered in the end zone.

He said it

"I'll try anything," Redskins coach Steve Spurrier said of his decision to turn the play-calling duties over to offensive coordinator Hue Jackson. "What we had been doing lately wasn't working very well. If I have to bench the play-caller, I'll do it."

Injury report

For the Redskins: Free safety Matt Bowen suffered a concussion in the first quarter, left the game and did not return.
