Barber visiting Giants!

Anyone catch the note on the bottom of the Post's Harrington article? Mentions Barber visiting the G-Men! Here's a question, if he signs with them, is that a good swap for the Skins? Guess it depends on the dollars...

Check the last paragraph...
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A32912-2002Mar3.html

redman,

Just thought it might be a tad ironic if we get Armstead and the Giants land Barber, don't you think?

Imagine if one is a bust and the other plays great for his team... you know we will be talking about this for years if it plays out that way...

the fact remains unless a linebacker is of the stature of an Urlacher or Arrington, he is replaceable in today's era of free agency.

As with safety, each year there is a glut of veteran linebackers that become available due to financial constraints.

In the case of Barber, he obviously is no longer seeking the $5 million bonus because the New York Giants are not a team that traditionally pays large bonuses to more than a couple of players on their team.

Certainly the Redskins' signing of Armstead surprised the Barber camp. I am sure they believed they had more leverage and time to work with the Redskins and play other teams off of the Skins' interest.

That strategy has been rendered null and void.

I don't see any way Barber returns here. Barber is a weakside linebacker and that spot is already filled by Armstead.

Even if the Skins went to a 3-4, you need an outside linebacker bigger than 6-0 and 229 to play at that spot.

Barber is a nice athlete and comes with some skills but he is never going to be a top flight linebacker in the NFL because he can't stop the run.

Barber may indeed have a long NFL career being a cover linebacker and borderline starter/top backup, but he is going to have to accept the fact that big money is not necessarily coming his way.

I don't think there's much to that rumor. I'd bet the WP is simply trying to drum up some offseason intrigue. LB swapping! Who get the better deal! Revenge games! All that nad more ...

I wouldn't worry about it until he actually signs on the bottom line.

Barber for Armstead is a good swap for the Skins if it comes off. Armstead is a proven performer and solidifies the front seven against the run on the outside. And he comes at basically the same price as Barber's tender for last season

Barber considers himself a playmaker but last year proved he must not have been that crucial as the linebackers played quite well without his services.

With Arrington and Armstead on the outside we really don't have room for Barber as a starter. If this were the old days before 1993, we would re-sign Barber and have him come off the bench a al Monte Coleman to play on third downs.

But we don't have that luxury anymore.

Shawn can play in the NFL but he is not a star, not a difference maker.

I expect him to get a contract with a base of around $800K to $900K a year with a modest bonus.

I could see why we'd be interested in Barber if his agent comes to his senses.

Armstead had what was for him, a sub-par season last year. He had a damaged hamstring that he played through, but it likely hampered his effectiveness. Hammies can sometimes be chronic once you push them too far, that could be a concern with Armstead. So having Barber on the team would take some that worry away.

Armstead, for all his ability, isn't the coverage linebacker that Barber is. I could see Lewis set up a scheme whereby Armstead plays run downs and Barber spells him on passing downs - and is used for coverage and blitzing. Look back at Monte Coleman's career for the model I'm thinking of. I thijk Barber could be pretty effective in that role

The market may be even softer than it was last year, and there might not be anyplace to go where you can make the money that these guys want. So if you're not getting offers you can't refuse, other factors come to the fore. Playing time might be in issue for Barber with Armstead on board, but his closeness to Arrington, and chance to work with Lewis might negate that.

By all accounts, Barber is an extremely hard worker, a serious student, a great locker room presence, and does have a lot of talent. Lewis is also the kind of coach that can get a lot out of his linebackers. So why not keep a talented linebacker if you can?

I just don't think it is realistic to expect Barber to return after the Armstead signing.

They play the same spot and every athlete has his pride.

Barber will go elsewhere even for less money rather than come back to the Redskins now.

You can trust me on that one.

The market is indeed soft but Barber will find a home somewhere specifically because he is 26 and has good athleticism.

The casualty in all this is Barber's wallet. He isn't going to get much more than his tender from last year, if that.

The injury ruined his free agent value that a solid season would have commanded.

It is unfortunate he and his agent glossed over that fact of life and continued on as if Shawn had played all 16 games and made a major contribution here in 2001.
