Cowboys Begin New Streak Over 'Skins

Cliff Cook

IRVING, Texas - The Cowboys survived an awful start in which they turned the ball over four times in the first half to beat their rival the Washington Redskins 21-14 Sunday afternoon at Texas Stadium.

Dallas' offense couldn't connect in the first half but seemed to settle down in the second half to take a commanding 15-point lead. Larry Allen and Flozell Adams both left the game for a period with injuries as did safety Darren Woodson, but all three returned.

The Redskins continued to battle late in the game and pulled within a touchdown after a Taylor Jacobs 19-yard touchdown reception followed by a successful two-point conversion completion to Darnerien McCants.

After a rough start for the Cowboys (6-2), things seemed to settle down in the second half with a strong defensive stand followed by a 36-yard punt return by Joey Galloway giving the Cowboys solid field position.

Running back Troy Hambrick, who fumbled twice in the first half, finished off a time-consuming Dallas drive with a one-yard touchdown run to put the Cowboys up 14-6 in the third quarter.

The Dallas defense would again hold the Redskins (3-5) and respond with a 14-play, 91-yard drive culminating in a 19-yard touchdown reception by Terry Glenn to increase the Cowboys lead to 21-6.

Glenn struggled in the first half, dropping three passes including one that bounced off his chest and was intercepted.

The Cowboys got off to an inauspicious start on Sunday afternoon with three turnovers on their first six plays. Just two plays into the game, Carter was intercepted by Matt Bowen on a pass intended for Galloway.

On the first play of the Cowboys next possession, Hambrick appeared to have a nice 12-yard gain, but as he was going down the ball came loose and LaVar Arrington recovered for the Redskins.

The troubles were far from over however as three plays into their second possession the Cowboys turned the ball over again when Terry Glenn had a pass bounce off his chest and land in the arms of Redskins safety Ifeanyi Ohalete.

Only one Cowboys turnover, the interception by Ohalete, resulted in points for the Redskins. Washington quarterback Patrick Ramsey connected with Laveraneus Coles for a seven-yard touchdown pass. Cowboys tackle Flozell Adams blocked the extra point.

Hambrick would fumble again in the second quarter after being hit by Redskins linebacker Jeremiah Trotter. Hambrick would redeem himself later with a one-yard touchdown run to give Dallas a 7-6 lead.

Dallas will play host to the Buffalo Bills next Sunday at Texas Stadium. Game time is 3:15. The Bills are coming off a bye week with a 4-4 record.
