Richmond Times Dispatch - The Redskins players voted on captains this week, and three players won the distinction.

Offensive lineman Trent Williams, defensive back DeAngelo Hall and special teams standout Adam Hayward will be the permanent captains this season. Coach Jay Gruden also will have rotating captains for each game. Sunday, Brian Orakpo and Alfred Morris were chosen for that role.

HOUSTON—Robert Griffin III will not serve as a team captain this season after wearing a ‘C’ on his jersey for the past season and a half. Left tackle Trent Williams, cornerback DeAngelo Hall and special teams ace Adam Hayward were elected unit captains by their fellow teammates, a team spokesman confirmed before Sunday’s kickoff.

Griffin learned of the vote results Friday from Coach Jay Gruden.

“He just informed me of who the captains were going to be, and that was the gist of the conversation,” Griffin said following Sunday’s 17-6 loss to the Texans. Griffin was elected as a co-captain midway through the 2012 season and then re-elected to that post last season.

“I mean, it’s just something that you want to go out and get, but Trent Williams is a great, great player and [is] great for this team,” Griffin added. “He’s the guy that everyone can look to if they want to be the best of the best. So it’s more of a testament to Trent, if anything else.”

Gruden has said he’ll also name two game day captains each week to join the season captains. On Sunday, running back Alfred Morris and linebacker Brian Orakpo were tapped.
