Om
Question came up at work here about when the NFL's "down by contact" rule went into effect. If I recall, back in the day a ballcarrier wasn't down until a defender actually held him on the ground until the whistle blew. If he didn't, the ballcarrier could get back up and go. Any of you historians (read: old guys ) know the genesis of the new(er) rule?
Larry
I would assume it was implimented because too many people were getting hurt, diving on people who're already on the ground. (I understand the "quick kick" rule was put in place for the same reason: too many people getting hurt).
