The Zimbabwe Mail, quoting a senior official of Mugabe's ZANU-PF party, said the President was undergoing intensive treatment in Singapore and that some members of his family had joined him after boarding a chartered private jet on Saturday. The alarm was raised when the government postponed a cabinet meeting set for today. http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/bahrain-transferring-striker-16102187#.T4MV9tVTDzg UN: Bahrain Should Consider Transferring StrikerU.N. visionary
Just when you thought the Egyptian election couldn't get any wilder...it proves you wrong! First there were worries of multiple disqualifications by the Military run Election Commission because of the American ties of several Islamist candidates, then they said that the Salafist candidate was ok to run and that his mother didn't have dual citizenship after all (decision made after a huge crowd of angry supporters of his gathered around the place where they were meeting to discuss it.) Then Omar "the torturer" Suleiman (Mubarak's former intelligence chief and all around torture and rendition guy and more recently his last VP) interjected himself into the race. There's been lots of anger about him over the last few days, ranging from complaining about the stuff he had done to prisoners to less sane claims that he's secretly a jew. Now we have this: http://blogs.aljazeera.net/liveblog/egypt-apr-14-2012-2130 Egypt election body disqualifies 10 candidates from presidential pol, including ex-spy chief Omar Suleiman, Brotherhood's Khairat Elshater, and Hazem Abu Ismail.[source:Reuters] The salafist candidate, the MB candidate, and Sulieman have all been disqualified by the commision. Why? Who knows. It should be interesting to find out. Oh and by the way the election is in about a month. Tarek Abul Atta, a commission official, said that Suleiman had been disqualified because he failed to get enough endorsements from 15 provinces as required under the law. Shater, who was released from prison in March last year, was barred because of a law stating that candidates can only run in elections six years after being released or pardoned, Abul Atta said. Abu Ismail is out of the race because his mother holds another nationality, violating election rules which state that all candidates, their parents, and their wives must have only Egyptian citizenship. According to election rules, candidates who have been disqualified can appeal the decision within 48 hours. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-17694485 Runner holding Libya's Olympic hopes Edited April 15, 2012 by visionary

It has boycotted all national elections for the past 15 years. Also on the ballot is the Front for Justice and Development, an Islamist group resolutely opposed to the government which until weeks ago was excluded from the political mainstream. Meanwhile the two traditional parties of power are struggling. The bigger one, the National Liberation Front, is in turmoil, with rebels trying to unseat their party leader. In other changes, commissions of judges and political parties have been given oversight over how the vote is run. International observers, including some from the European Union and the National Democratic Institute (NDI), have been invited. There is, though, little sign of enthusiasm about the election in Algeria, which this year marks the 50th anniversary of its independence from France. In fact, the authorities seem concerned that apathy could lead to a low turnout. The state phone operator has been sending out text messages urging people to vote. Even with the changes, parliament has few powers, many people suspect opposition parties of secretly colluding with the authorities, and the state still exercises tight control over the country's political space. visionary
BAHRAIN There was a peaceful protest of around 100 women today led by the hunger striker's daughter. They chanted against the monarchy for about an hour before being dispersed by stun grenades from police. There seems to be a lot of media in Bahrain now for the race, so the police have apparently let up on the massive ammounts of tear gas they've been unleashing constantly for the past year. Despite the threats and hostilities, a government spokesman said South Sudan was only defending its territory and considers Sudan a "friendly nation." Benjamin said that southern forces would withdraw from Heglig if the African Union guarantees a cessation of hostilities, an agreement on border demarcation, and the withdrawal of Sudanese forces from the nearby border region of Abyei, with Ethiopian troops moving in as peacekeepers.Sudan President Omar al-Bashir on Wednesday threatened to topple the South Sudan government after accusing the south of trying to take down his Khartoum-based government. Al-Bashir continued his hardline rhetoric on Thursday in an address to a "popular defense" brigade headed to the Heglig area. The ceremony was held in al-Obeid, in northern Kordofan. "Sudan will cut off the hand that harms it," said al-Bashir, a career army officer who fought against the southern army, the Sudan People's Liberation Army, during the 1983-2005 civil war. Bahraini authorities stepped up security around the Formula One circuit after clashes between protesters and security forces intensified ahead of Sunday's Grand Prix race. Last year, a wave of anti-government protests by the island's Shiite majority and a violent crackdown by the Sunni rulers forced organizers to cancel the 2011 Bahrain GP. At least 50 people have been killed since the start of Bahrain's uprising, inspired by other Arab Spring revolts, and violence continues to roil the island. Friday's massive rally was organized by Shiite political blocs, including the main groups Al Wefaq and Al Waad. Protesters shouted slogans against the ruling Sunni dynasty, that is the main backer of the F1 race. The crown prince owns rights to the event. "We demand democracy" and "Down, Down Hamad," opposition supporters chanted in reference to King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, as they massed on the main highway leading out of the capital, Manama, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of the Formula One track. "What threatens the unity of Iraq is dictatorship and authoritarian rule," Barzani said in a 45-minute interview in his sprawling office outside of Irbil, the capital of the Kurdish region he leads in northern Iraq. "If Iraq heads toward a democratic state, then there will be no trouble. But if Iraq heads toward a dictatorial state, then we will not be able to live with dictatorship." He called it a "very dangerous political crisis in the country" and said the impasse must be broken by September, when voters in the Kurdish region may consider a referendum for a state independent of Iraq. Barzani also said he "wholeheartedly" supports Sunni desires to create their own self-rule regions in Iraq. Sunni lawmakers, whose Iraqiya political coalition won the most seats in 2010 parliamentary elections but were outmaneuvered by al-Maliki for the right to form the government, bitterly complain they have no say in Iraq's power structure. ---------- Post added April-26th-2012 at 12:43 AM ---------- https://twitter.com/#!/ReutersIndia Pakistan Supreme Court finds Prime Minister guilty of contempt – TV channels12:40 AM https://twitter.com/#!/AJELive Pakistan Prime Minister handed symbolic sentence for contempt of court conviction, will face no jail time. http://aje.me/Iao8cQ12:51 AM Edited April 26, 2012 by visionary

But Najib must be mindful of conservatives within his own party who are wary that his moves to relax tough security laws and push limited election reforms could threaten their 55-year hold on power. Last July's rally, more than 10,000-strong, ended in violence when police fired tear gas and water cannons at protesters, drawing criticism of a heavy-handed government response and sending Najib's popularity sliding. His approval rating has since rebounded to 69 percent, according to one poll.

The main contenders for their endorsement are the two top Islamists — the Brotherhood candidate, Mohammed Morsi, and Abdel-Moneim Abolfotoh, a moderate who broke with the Brotherhood last year. This week, one organization known as the Religious Legal Commission for Rights and Reform announced its backing for Morsi, after more than 30 hours of meetings with 10 candidates it invited for interviews. The panel went through a list of over 30 questions with each, topped by how the candidate intends to implement Islamic Shariah law, what his foreign policy will be and how he would deal with the clerics if elected. When Morsi, for example, was asked what was the first country he would visit as president, he replied Saudi Arabia, the heartland of Salafi thought where many of Egypt's Salafi clerics studied. In the interview with Abolfotoh — who is also popular among some liberal Egyptians — the commission's secretary-general Mohammed Yosri called him out on his liberal, leftist views. "The question is, Where is the Islamist school that you belong to? And why do you fear appearing clearly as an Islamist?" Yosri asked. "I am conservative religiously, not politically," Abolfotoh replied. "If you mean left as in concerned with social justice, then I am a leftist," he said, arguing that social justice and freedom of opinion are part of Islam. http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2012/aprilweb-only/egypt-president-christians.html What Egypt's Leading Islamist Presidential Candidate Thinks About Christians Edited April 28, 2012 by visionary

Early this month, Al Qaida militants launched an offensive on Lowder, a small town in the volatile province of Abyan. The militants faced unprecedented resistance not only from the troops but from the local people. "We took up arms to defend our families, property and the town against Al Qaida," said a man who prefers to be known as Al Dalie. "We have learnt lessons from places that were controlled by Al Qaida. People were driven out of their homes and cities were destroyed. We are fighting because we don't want to end up in that miserable situation." Al Dalie said the people in Lowder decided to fight Al Qaida when they killed a local figure who was campaigning against the extremists. "The honeymoon ended when we announced that Al Qaida should immediately leave the town. We expelled them and arrested those who refused to go. In retaliation, Al Qaida assassinated our leader and claimed responsibility for his death." In a couple of weeks, those fighters managed to drum up support and thwarted an attack. "Our fighters are from a mixture [of] Herak [members of the pro-autonomy Southern Movement], Salafists and members of the Islamist Islah party. We are unified under one goal which is defending our town from Al Qaida." Edited April 28, 2012 by visionary

visionary
http://www.daralhayat.com/portalarticlendah/390509 Kaka Wants to SecedeSat, 28 April 2012 Mostafa Zein The two leaders, Kaka Massoud (Barzani) and Mam Jalal (Talabani), do not disagree over the goal of seceding from Iraq and declaring the independence of the Kurdish state. But they do disagree over the timing and over dividing Northern Iraq. Barzani considers that the situation in the Middle East is suitable for escalation in the face of the government in Baghdad. He threatened once from Washington, several times from Erbil, and escalated his threat from Turkey after meeting with Erdoğan and Davutoğlu. He escalated in the face of Baghdad, after his gift to Ankara of a stance it has for decades been waiting for, in which he advised the fighters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK – Partiya Karkerên Kurdistan), who occupy positions in the mountains of the autonomous province, to put a stop to their military operations and turn to dialogue with the government of the Justice and Development Party (AKP – Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi). Kaka replied to his partner Mam Jalal, who does not consider the timing to be appropriate for declaring the independence of the state, saying: “I am willing to spill my blood for independence, but I am not willing to spill it for autonomy”. There are in Iraqi political circles two opinions concerning Kurdistan province: the first considers that Baghdad should make a bold move and give the Kurds complete independence, while keeping Kirkuk, in order to shed this heavy historical burden; the second clings to the federal formula because regional circumstances do not allow this at the moment – i.e. because timing, once again, is the most important factor. In other words, the Arabs, with their sects, and the Kurds, with their tribes, see no possibility of maintaining the formula of the one state, whether federal or centralized, and are waiting for the right circumstances for secession.... Earlier on Thursday, South Sudan said it had accepted the AU's seven-point roadmap that called for a cessation of hostilities. Based on the seven-point roadmap, the two countries have until next Tuesday to restart stalled negotiations and three months to reach an agreement. The AU is trying to get the two sides to again negotiate the countries' shared border, citizenship matters and oil revenue sharing. The UN Security Council on Wednesday unanimously passed a resolution threatening Khartoum and Juba with sanctions if they failed to silence the guns and resume talks within two weeks, endorsing the AU's deadline of May 8. The Sudanese Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Thursday accepting the AU plan as well as the UN resolution.
