Cris Carter

I just read that Carter seems to say this is his last year in Minny, but might play somewhere else for a year or so. I would love to have him here but it is a pipe dream I know

"On Wednesday, Carter seemed ready to move on -- whether it was with another team or on to a different occupation entirely.

"I've been part of a great situation for a long, long time," he said. "That situation has changed. All good things come to an end, be it this Sunday or a year from now."

This is from an article I read at http://cbs.sportsline.com/u/ce/multi/0,1329,4717044_59,00.html

Carter has been a special player and he has some skills left ... but I'd like some more youth. We've employed retreads at WR for most of the last 10 years with only Ellard giving any lengthy production. Gardner will work out I think. Should Westbrook go I'd like to see us pick up someone at the beginning or perhaps in the middle of their career rather than the end.

What we couldn't do with Westbrook, who at first "really didn't" take Irving Fryer seriously, I believe Gardner and Thompson would, because they are so young. For Gardner, this would be like Charley Taylor coaching Monk, Clark, Sanders, Seay and Garrett. He would be ON the field like Michael Jordan, to "demonstrate" his answers for them and this vivid picture has a much more positive impact on them when it's their turn. When they see the things he does, preparing, playing to "win", not just a check and wanting to help the teammates, that translates into something else positive, no matter what they do.

Where we had a problem with Westbrook was, he was already set in his ways. Remember, a few games after the 2000 season started, how Westbrook proclaimed to be a more "positive" person. That was Fryer's SECOND year with the Skins, how come it didn't soak in, in 1999? Well as time went by, though he wasn't that impressed with Irving Fryer, it began to sink in, that being more dedicated actually brings more money. Here are some names, and tell me about their contracts down the years:

Starr, Namath, Staubach, Joe Greene, Dan Marino, Tim Brown, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Art Monk, Brett Favre, John Elway, yes - Darrell Green. It's not just the Hall of Fame inductions or nominations, they get paid too! You can suck somebody in once in a while, but you still have to have game to do it (Deion). No history, no committment, like his old teammate AC and things get bleak. It isn't just the money either. Just being on the field to contribute is all Carter needs. Helps QB's look good, like Rice does. Westbrook could be the next John Taylor in SF with Owens on the deep patterns.

However, while suffering under Banks antics, his stock is plummeting, and the only saving him - committment to improve his game. If Fryer in that little window of time did that, even with a reluctant Westbrook (maybe), what could Carter do wtih Gardner and Thompson. I believe it would be phenominal, because Carter is far more fiesty than Fryer and he "drives" his teammates. Of course he'd realize he'd come in as a #2 or #3 receiver, but it would much fruitfal with a Carter than a Fryer.

He suffers under Moss' dictation, to have the ball for hype, while Carter knows his (Carter) 3-6 pass receptions a game for an average of 10-15 yds a game mean "crucial" first downs in a, UH-HUM, "ball control" offense. He could teach our "possession" receiver, Gadrner all the tricks and with Gardner's size, then you'd be reminded of a Art Monk or Michael Irving type of style.

IF Carter wanted a 1 yr contract, I would be willing to bring him for an interview, physiscal, workout and possible signing immediately when he became free. Of course, being the GM, I could do that.

Amen 2cents. Hell why don't we bring back Leslie Shep, or AC, if we want a problem child.

This guy is a cancer. Biggest piece of walkin pig $hit to stand on the side lines, and throw tantrums. Prozak poster child if you ask me.

And Inside the NFL kills me. The'll do an interview after he wiggs, and he'll be all calm, with that preacher $hit going on, and they'll talk him up as a leader of men, and a poor misunderstood player.

I disagree. Cris Carter has tried to keep his team fired up this year and if that means getting in the face of the Defense or anyone as long as it is for the right reason, I am cool with that

I just don't understand how you guys could say Carter is the problem, look across the field and tell me Moss isn't the attitude problem in Minny. Maybe Cris has tried for too long and way to hard to et that punk a$$ to grow up, he hasn't and I doubt anyone will, Minny has 2 problems up there with thier WR's.

1 Moss is the worlds biggest piece of crap

2 Carter isn't going to be around next year to help with him.

A man with Carter abilities and desire and this Bouman guy doesn't even look his way. I bet Moss's number go down even more as he gets to be more of a punk after Carter leaves but hey he is still getting a huge check, no matter if he wants to play or not.

So I would have to say Carter is the not the problem in minny but he could be a short term answer here.Isn't gonna happen but oh well

I would have to say if Carter wanted a one or two year deal here, I would drive myself to Minny and give him a ride here. GArdner needs someone like Carter for a year or two.

One of the reasons that I've disliked Westbrook so much over the years was his response to a question about being mentored by Henry Ellard. He responded "Henry Ellard ain't got nothin' to teach me." That pretty much set the tone for early Westbrook.

If you go back and look at Fryar's stats, the guy performed well for this team. If we'd have kept him and not signed Lockett, I suspect his stats would be at least comparable.

Chris Carter...I don't see it. He'd be a liability against the cap. And if Banks is throwing the ball, what's the difference?

different situation, different players.

whereas Westbrook came into the NFL believing he was ready for stardom with little work or improvement, I think Gardner is smarter than that.

working with a veteran receiver that can really accent how important it is to run precise patterns and how to prepare for opponents in the NFL, are exactly the things that can accelerate Gardner's growth and maturity.

Westbrook doesn't bring those qualities to the table.

Carter is a consistent 1,000 yard receiver who has been to many pro bowls in his career. He would be more of a leader on this team than anyone else on the offense.

Right now there are no vocal leaders on the Skins offense. And that has been a real problem. Davis is quiet. Banks is quiet. Westbrook is a mouth but not a leader, there's a difference.

Maybe Jansen or Szott are the "leaders" so to speak but you need a skill player or two to emerge as the difference makers that propel your team in crunch time emotionally.

On defense we have some vocal players and I think that makes a difference. Arrington, Smoot, Lang, and more recently Darrell Green have provided the defense with an emotional lift when needed.

I think acquiring a player of Carter's caliber could be a good move depending on what is done with the qb position.

I agree that if you have a qb that can't deliver the ball than having talent at WR is a waste of money. frown.gif

It'll be a tough sell to get Cris Carter here.

One, he'll want to join a team that he feels can win a Super Bowl. Without an established QB, we are not one of those teams.

Two, WR isn't exactly a plum position in the MartyBall offense. And Carter is the type of player who demands a lot of touches.

Taking those factors into account, Carter would most likely end up in Denver, Green Bay, SF, or even Philly.

Buddy actually cut Carter because of his drug problems. Buddy didn't want to ruin Carter, so he made up the "all he does it catch touchdowns" thing.

The bottom line is that when Westbrook leaves we will be down to Kevin Lockett, 26, as the senior receiver on the team and he has never been a starter in his 5 years in the NFL.

To groom Gardner, Thompson, McCants, Skaggs and whoever else we have on board, we are going to have to make a move to get a veteran that can provide some stability and consistency.

Now, who that veteran might be is still up in the air as the list of available players is likely to grow by next March as teams sort out their budgets and needs entering the draft period.

The Redskins need to figure out what kind of offensive system they are going to run next season and hopefully have a quarterback in place, so that the search for a receiver follows on with those decisions.

The last thing we need is for the team to sign a veteran receiver and then find out he doesn't mesh with the new quarterback the team acquires later on.

I would still like to see us bring in Chandler because I think he will be out there this offseason, I think the Falcons are gonna give the team to Vick, he may not be ready but they are paying a crap load of money for a second year back up. I think Chandler is a QB that knows how to win and that would enable us to draft a QB and stay behind Chandler a year or two.

Even Herman Moore would be a decent pick up cause I think he will also be out there and cheap.

Hmmm. I think Chandler is nearing the end of the line. He's in decline, though he can still play well at times. He always seems to miss games during the course of a season. You can almost bank on it. Ditto with Steve Berlein. Both would have been nice pickups a couple of years ago, but now, I'm not so sure.

Frankly, I'd be willing to go with Lockett as a starter across from Gardner. I think their skills would complement each other nicely. It's difficult to evaluate Lockett's play because of Bank's inability to see the field. He's had, by far, the most reliable hands of all the receivers. Athletically, he's perfect for a ball control offense that needs to convert on third downs. I like the young guys behind them, too. Like bulldog says, I don't see the need to sign another receiver, even if Westbrook leaves, until the quarterback question is addressed.

Funny but I'm starting to think it will be tougher for Gardner next year because he will be facing the top corner instead of Westy, who would not have been caught from behind on the pass play.

We are going to miss this guy.

Yeah, Moss was a choir boy before he got corrupted by that mean Viking establishiment. rolleyes.gif

Carter is frustrated because the Vikings organization is poorly run and is moving backwards, and because they just don't throw him the ball anymore despite being open. In addition, his would-be protege Randy Moss is an absolute A-hole who doesn't listen to anyone. Carter's going to the Hall of Fame, so he has nothing else to prove. He just wants to go out a winner.

That being said, I don't see him as being worth the money he'll demand. His mouthy ways don't bother me nearly as much as his price tag.

Marty will not negotiate a contract without some kind 1mil with incentives. He would have to comptete as well with other teams that will still salibate over this guy, like Baltimore, Houston, Seattle and Atlanta. He could also wind up in, yes, Philadelphia again, because, Buddy and the gang aint there no more.

That's why I mentioned a 1 yr deal, because it is more tolerable and Gardner would benefit, much like a "resurgent" Tim Brown has, from just having Rice on the team. The advantage is ours, though we could bring in another QB, that at least completes a pass when a receiver is definitely open and keep Westbrook. Westbrook only problem could be his shifty attitude. Man what would I give for a Marvin Harrison right now smile.gif
