It's a little surprising that we weren't able to get any value for Rinehart -- he was a solid candidate for NFL Guard/backup in the prototype NFL run blocking schemes . Rinehart main sin is that he didn't fit Shanahan's zone blocking system as well asthe new candidates Allen/Shanahan had brought in.

So Rinehart couldn't be showcased very well in a ZBS, and apparently Shanahan must have decided he wasn't worth developing. So, instead Chad was buried with the third string. It became obvious to all that "Shanny" had already decided Rinehart wasn't going to be part of the 53.

Consequently, Rinehart should have been actively shopped around earlier -- either around the draft or during the early pre-season. He did command some value as a mid-round Guard schooled by Bugel. To expect a Tryon deal at the last moment between 6-8pm on Sept 4 -- that's not very realistic.

I feel this was badly handled; essentially Shanahan threw away a third round pick after only two years. Sure this does happen around the league -- but that doesn't make this episode look any better.

So we should just keep a dead-wood on the roster just because he was picked in the 3rd round? I think the team made a good decision by releasing him and moving on. There is no need to keep a player on the payroll when he's unable to perform on the field.
