If North Korea ever attacked Canada, I could see US troops coming, not to our rescue, but to take what land is left after the war is done. And as for the "we don't have to protect ourselves" thing, well, if you don't do anything to piss off other countries like invading for no good reason, then you don't need to defend yourself since no one wants to attack.
