EXCLUSIVE ANALYSIS

An early look at the AFC East

by

Dan Pompeii

This was a good division last year, and it got better in the offseason. The Bills (Takeo Spikes) and Patriots (Rosevelt Colvin) added talented young players, and the Dolphins (Junior Seau) and Jets (Curtis Conway) went with vets. The AFC East should be football's toughest division in 2003, with all four teams looking like playoff contenders.

The predicted order of finish:

1. Patriots (10-6). There are more talented teams in the league, but the Patriots have more talent than they did when they won the Super Bowl after the 2001 season.

2. Dolphins. With the combination of a solid running game and an excellent defense, they will be consistently competitive. Stability at quarterback would be huge for the Dolphins.

3. Bills (9-7). The improvements they made on defense are sure to manifest themselves in their record. The offense will be challenged to maintain last year's pace.

4. Jets (8-8). This team lost some talent in the offseason, but it has enough young, ascending players to remain competitive. It will be tough for Chad Pennington to top last year's performance, however.

Nah, the AFC East is a piece of cake.

According to some of the fans on this board, the Jets went 9-7 last year with a very, very weak schedule.

:puke: :puke:

I don't know how we'll match up with the mighty NFC Least. :silly: :silly:

Thanks for posting the articles.

R4L, that is strange. I looked back at the original article and somebody goofed because there isn't a predicted "record" for the Dolphins. Can't be worse than 9-7 or better than 10-6, though!

there is no way teams are going to lose as many under 30 contributors as the Jets and be a BETTER team for it :)

the Jets have some other younger talent and won't be a poor team in any event, but for some to say the team won't miss a beat and will cruise back to the top of their division is just wishful thinking.

it took Coles, Thomas, Morton, etc... several years in the league to be the solid players they were for NY last year.

The Jets aren't going to go out in one draft and bring in 3 or 4 rookies that are going to fill that void in one fell swoop. It is going to take some time.

And signing guys like Curtis Conway that are on their last legs and telling Jet fans the team is going to be fine at WR is just another mirage move by Terry Bradway to CYA.

Right now, from the end of the season to June, each team in the East the Jets are competing with have improved.
