The Conscience of Donna Brazile

By Lowell Ponte

FrontPageMagazine.com | May 30, 2003

PONTEFICATIONS

"I’M JUST OUTRAGED," SAID DONNA BRAZILE when the shocking news reached her. As the Gore-Lieberman 2000 Campaign Manager was told the names of the 10 Democratic National Committee (DNC) staffers being laid off to save money, Brazile recalls thinking "Oh, oh – they’re all black. I went through the roof."

This has been a springtime of discontent and of epiphany for Brazile, now chairwoman of the DNC’s Voting Rights Institute and the African-American overseer appointed by her DNC white masters to keep black voters chained down on the Democratic Party’s plantation.

Instead of laying off these 10 competent African-Americans, Brazile suggested, why not cut payroll? But her fat cat white bosses would not for an instant entertain cutting their own huge salaries to save the jobs of minority underlings. It’s easy to envision these white bosses giving Brazile their "If you start getting uppity, your head will be next on the chopping block…don’t forget that you are our colored servant" look that blacks have always gotten from the Democratic Party’s rulers.

Donna Brazile stifled herself. She must have fought back the impulse to remind her masters of the spring groundbreaking and the plans to have the new $32 million dollar Democratic Headquarters with its own TV and radio studios and other state-of-the-art high technology and luxury executive offices completed by December 2003.

That $32 million could have employed African-Americans, healed the sick, fed the poor, or at least helped win some 2004 races. Instead it was being used to build a gold-plated Taj Mahal and throne room for DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe, the sock puppet installed by Bill and Hillary Clinton to advance their personal power, income and ambitions.

Like his masters the Clintons, McAuliffe knew how to raise money. He had been their bag man, handling the brown paper bags containing millions of dollars in cash that Communist Chinese generals and other "contributors" brought to Clinton White House "coffees" and paid nights in the Lincoln Bedroom.

But as Brazile bit her lip to keep from saying, McAuliffe had lost House seats and failed to hold the Senate for Democrats in 2002, reversing the long-established historic pattern for "out party" gains when a Republican sits in the Oval Office.

McAuliffe was not a genuine Democrat, she must have thought. He and the Clintons were just milking the once-noble Democratic Party for everything they could get, and in the process they were killing it.

On some sleepless nights, Brazile in her mind probably turned over and over the thought that the Clintons had sabotaged Al Gore. Had Gore won, Bill would no longer be de facto head and hero of the Democratic Party, and Hillary would be roadblocked from seeking the White House in 2004 and 2008. Gore’s loss was the Clintons’ gain.

A bright woman, Brazile in her deepest heart must sometimes remember that the Democratic Party has always been America’s racist party – the party of the slaveowners, of the Ku Klux Klan and its "former" Grand Kleagles like Senator Robert Byrd (D.-W.V.), of Jim Crow and the attack dogs of Bull Connor, of fomenting and using racial polarization, both black and white, to gain money, votes and power.

(As a famous liberal Democrat once privately told me, "Lowell, don’t you understand? Welfare is the price we pay to keep the poor in their place!" This is what Democrats mean by "compassion.")

Blacks put themselves back in chains, Brazile must at times have dimly recognized, when they abandoned the party of the Great Emancipator and returned to the party that continues to this day to be run by the slaveowners.

How ironic it is that, like the antebellum Southern plantations, today’s Democratic Party survives only because of black enslavement and sacrifice. In 2000 her candidate Al Gore came close to victory only because he carried 90 percent of the African-American vote nationwide – and 93 of that vote in Florida.

Gore fell pathetically short of winning among his fellow white voters, who easily recognized his phoniness. As analyst David A. Bositis of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies (JCPES) found, of Gore’s total vote, 18.9 percent – nearly one vote in five – came from the 12 percent of America’s population that is African-American.

Without this monolithic black vote, the Democratic Party would be consigned to permanent minority, and eventual third party, status. In 2000 Senate races, this African-American vote provided the margin of victory for Democrats Bill Nelson in Florida, Debbie Stabenow in Michigan, the deceased Mel Carnahan (whose wife was illegally credited with his votes and declared elected) in Missouri, and in New York Hillary Clinton.

"Don’t take African-Americans for granted," Brazile has been warning her comrades, and with good reason.

As Donald Lambro of the Washington Times noted this week, a survey last summer by JCPES, which focuses on black issues, "found black partisan identification with the Democrats declining. Only 63 percent of black voters now call themselves Democrats, down from 74 percent in 2000. Self-identified independents were up 20 percent. Ten percent now identify with the GOP, up from 4 percent in 2000." Internal Democratic polls, he reports, "reveal similar signs of partisan erosion among younger black voters."

Democrats might grudgingly declare this is another example of their cultural success. By promoting labor unions, they lifted blue collar workers to middle class and even upper-middle class income – and today nearly 40 percent of those workers have acquired middle class values and a craving for tax cuts…and they vote Republican.

Perhaps in like manner, as two-thirds of African-Americans have seen their income rise to middle class status and watched racism fade away, millions of blacks now think of themselves more as taxpayers, individuals and American citizens. They no longer are fooled by collectivist mind controllers who tell them to think of themselves only as members of an oppressed black minority. With the coming of equality, more and more African-Americans are returning to the party of the Great Emancipator – or at least are escaping the clutches of the party of the slaveowners that tried to keep them addicted to the life-ruining drug of welfare.

In today’s War on Terrorism, African-Americans face the same foreign threat and feel the same patriotic pride as all other Americans. And because of this, they feel the same revulsion as other good Americans at the anti-military, anti-American politicians of the Democratic Party.

"The American people…believe that we Democrats are weak and indecisive when it comes to standing up to dictators and terrorists, and when it comes to the primary responsibility of government: defending the nation….," wrote Brazile, daughter of a veteran, and her friend Timothy Bergreen in the May 21 Wall Street Journal. "If voters continue to see us as feckless and effete they will not listen to our message next year and they will re-elect Mr. Bush."

Effete? This is a surprising word from the pen of an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Women’s Studies Program at Georgetown University, a feminist whose door at the Kennedy School used to sport a sign reading "The Diva Is In." But she supported Bush’s overthrow of Saddam Hussein, without quibble or equivocation. And the provocative Donna Brazile seems more and more aware that something is desperately wrong at the heart of the Democratic Party.

Brazile is not alone. Susan Estrich, who headed the failed Presidential campaign of Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis in 1988 and now teaches law at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, recently urged Hillary Clinton’s supporters "to shut up."

"Let’s not mince words," wrote Estrich, "Hillary Clinton is never going to be president of the United States. There is no more divisive figure in the Democratic Party, much less the country, than the former first lady….But the more people talk about her as a future president, the more money Republicans raise. The more people talk about her as a future president, the less attention the current candidates, who might win, receive."

But with her book, her media tour to promote it, and the fact that the Democrats now running are nine dwarves, Hillary Clinton and her lackeys and running dogs are unlikely to stay quiet. They kept the DNC under their iron-fisted control precisely so Hillary could become President as soon as this becomes feasible.

And as of this week, even Bill Clinton in a dialogue at the Kennedy Library in Boston has said he would like to see the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution and its two-term limit revised so that he might be re-elected years or decades hence to a third term. Two-timing was not enough for his voracious, insatiable political ego.

Perhaps his time leading anti-American demonstrations in Europe while a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford gave Mr. Clinton a craving for British Parliamentary democracy. (This, we now know from the secret codicils to his will, is what imperialist Cecil Rhodes intended via his scholarships – to turn the brightest young Americans into Anglophiles as a step towards bringing the breakaway United States back under British imperial rule.)

Mr. Clinton was not America’s first black president, novel Toni Morrison notwithstanding, but he may be our first "Shadow President" in the British Parliamentary sense. He has set himself up, as the party out of power does in England, as the "President" in exile in a kind of "government-in-waiting" that offers its alternatives to every policy of the ruling majority party. This would explain why Bill Clinton exhibits a seemingly-uncontrollable urge to criticize nearly everything President George W. Bush does. It is a clear symptom of Clinton’s no longer being an American.

This makes the Clintons’ ongoing control over the Democratic Party and its tactics of obstruction ominous, a dark cloud shadowing our non-parliamentary democracy and national future.

In an earlier era the American people could have overthrown this Un-American mutation of one of our two major political parties merely by voting against Clintonoid candidates. But the DNC has short-circuited this safeguard by smothering democracy itself.

When the Democratic National Convention meets in 2004 to name its Presidential ticket, about 40 percent of the votes needed for such nomination will not have been chosen by Democratic voters. These are the appointed "Super-Delegates," 800 of whom will be empowered by being part of the ruling Democratic elite. They are not answerable to ordinary Democratic voters. They represent and serve the backroom Democratic bosses and fat cats. And they are empowered to block any candidate who might threaten their power – a Governor Howard Dean of Vermont, a Reverend Al Sharpton, or whomever.

What does this mean? It means that since the Clinton-McAuliffe takeover, the Democratic Party is no longer democratic.

The good news for America, which Donna Brazile can sense in her bones, is that the Democratic Party will not be around much longer. Like its fellow collectivized Socialist, Marxist and Fascist parties elsewhere, it has failed and is sliding inexorably into the garbage disposal of history.

As to its new $32 million headquarters, we need to remember that the Taj Mahal was never a palace. It was and is a tomb. The new Democratic Party Taj Mahal will be a fitting place to bury this party that began in greatness two centuries ago with Thomas Jefferson and ended in corruption and squalor with William Jefferson Clinton and his co-president Hillary. Let that be its epitaph.
