stevea's 2nd round wish list

I first tried a 2nd-round wish list back in '99 -- "If Champ in round 1, who in round 2?" The top name on my list was Jon Jansen, in the category "should not fall this far, but just might". Needless to say, when Cass traded up 3 slots for Jansen I was in Hog Heaven.

The second name on my list was WR Kevin Johnson, drafted by Cleveland at the top of the 2nd.

The other name I remember is Luke Petitgout, about 10th on my list, whom I felt would be a fair value at our #40 slot if no one higher rated in a position we needed fell that far. Of course the Giants took him at slot #19. Obviously my judgment was much better than that of the Giants "brain trust". :)

Now for 2003 ...

The positions that I would like to see the Redskins focus upon in the Draft are

- RDE to replace Bruce and rotate with Upshaw.

- LDE to rotate with Wynn. This player might also rotate at DT.

- S to compete with Iffy (I hadn't thought this was necessary, but some of the arguments here and on CPND have won me over that if not necessary it would at least be a good thing).

- DT, unless we get Haley and sign Myers, although even if we only get one of them I'm inclined to prefer a combo LDE/DT in the draft.

Personally, if we do NOT trade down but simply use our 2nd and 3rd round picks to fill any two of these needs with good value picks I'll be a happy camper.

My ratings (aka, wishlist)

LONG-SHOTS TO DROP DOWN TO THE MID-2ND ROUND

1. LDE/DT Kenny Peterson (lowest probability of all)

2. RDE Calvin Pace ............................................ TAKEN AT 18

3. LDE/DT Ty Warren (yes, he can play LDE) ..... TAKEN AT 13

4. S Troy Polamalu ............................................. TAKEN AT 16

ANY OF THESE MIGHT BE AVAILABLE IN THE MID-2ND ROUND

5. LDE/DT Nick Eason

6. DE Tyler Brayton ............................................ TAKEN AT 32

7. DE Corey Redding

8. RDE DeWayne White

9. RDE Chris Kelsay (probably drafted in 1st round)

10 S Rashean Mathis

WOULD ONLY WANT IN A TRADE DOWN TO THE LATE-2ND ROUND

11. CB Dennis Weathersby

12. LDE/DT Rien Long ***

13. S Mike Doss

14. S Julian Battle

FWIW, I found it very confusing to rank the players whom I ranked 6-9. It would be easy to juggle the sequence on those 4.

*** Some have suggested that Long is a late 1st / high 2nd. I'm not capable of arguing his value, but I must refute one argument being used. The argument that he was initially rated as high 1st and only dropped due to bad workouts is distorted. It's true he was rated top 10 by TSN and Kiper in January, presumably before they had done their film work. But even back in January, BEFORE HIS WORKOUTS, some of the serious scouts, including TFY, Rob Rang, and Matt Gambill, had looked at him carefully on film and concluded that he was NOT a first round prospect. He then dropped even further due to bad workouts.

....................................................

just my two cents ... your mileage may vary

HTTR!

My list....

Potential to drop but unlikely:

*Kenny Peterson (Versatality gives him 1st round value)

*Troy Polamalu (Incredible athlete, but more SS than FS)

*Rashean Mathis (Can Play FS or CB, from small school)

*Bryant Johnson (Speed helps him, safer than K.W.?)

Will more than likely be there.....

*Cory Redding (Great Talent, hasn't put it together)

*Ty Warren (Great physical skills, needs motivation?)

*Dewayne White (Technician, but lackluster SR. year)

*Calvin Pace (Athletic and Big, does everything well)

*Mike Doss (If we're targeting SS, he's our man)

*Rien Long (If DT deals fall through, I'll love him there)

Wouldn't think about till late 2nd

*Tyler Brayton (Played both DT and DE but excels at neither)

*Jarret Johnson (I'd love to trade down and take him, sleeper!)

*Julian Battle (CB or S? Immature and makes mental mistakes)

*Ken Hamlin (Great skills, questionable character)

*Kevin Curtis (Spurrier WR, great value here)

Just out of curiosity, since we probably don't need a receiver too badly...

Where is Tyrone Calico projecting now? I thought he'd be a solid pickup in the 3rd if there weren't any worthwhile S/DL prospects left, but now I have heard of the Titans trading down and taking him in the bottom of the first.

If somehow he's still around in the 3rd, I'd love to see him there.
