2003 COMBINE "DREAM TEAM"

"Final News & Notes from Indianapolis"

02/27/2003

By: Draft2003 Staff

A total of 323 prospects were invited to this year's NFL Combine... here are the Draft2003.com selections for the 2003 Combine "Dream Team". The selections were based off of their results, 1-on-1 interviews and overall evaluation of the skill level shown and improvement made in the eyes of both our scouts and those who were in attendance from the 32 NFL teams... a total of 50 players, including offensive, defensive and special teams prospects, are included. Special thanks to Steve Alic, Keenan Davis and Chris Jenkins of the NFL for all of their help and information during our stay in Indianapolis last week.

OFFENSE:

QB Kyle Boller, California -- Ran 4.58 in the 40... at 6-foot-3, 234 pounds... did not throw... but did exactly what he needed to do... which is make teams think... would not be surprised if he was rated in the Top-2 at his position on a few teams' boards... there is something about this kid that you can't measure on the field or in a personal workout... it usually is a sign of being a "Special" talent...

QB Dave Ragone, Louisville -- Ran 4.98 in the 40... at 6-foot-4, 249 pounds... lost a few pounds... threw the ball very well... and more importantly... with improved accuracy... there are still some questions about his mobility... but he has good character... and interviewed well...

QB Chris Simms, Texas -- Ran 4.82 in the 40... at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds... threw the ball well... some questions about his deep throws... could fillout to over 230 pounds... interviewed very well... and also spent over 45 minutes with the media... privately says he would like to play for either Dallas or NY Giants...

RB Justin Fargas, USC -- Ran 4.31 in the 40... at 6-foot-1, 220 pounds... did 27 reps of 225 pounds... was cleared by team doctors... in a light class of running backs... he may have moved himself into the first day...

RB Willis McGahee, Miami -- His personality and confidence made believers out of everyone in attendance... he was in only his seventh week of rehab from his knee injury... yet showed up with only 6.2% body fat...

RB Quentin Griffin, Oklahoma -- Ran 4.47 in the 40... at 5-foot-7, 196 pounds... caught the ball very well during drills... and those were the two areas of most concern to scouts... his size limits his upside...

RB Derek Watson, South Carolina State -- Ran 4.63 in the 40... at 6-foot-0, 223 pounds... caugth the ball well... needs to work on playing with better balance... might also do better to drop down to the 215-218-pound range... for all his off-field issues... he was fine to speak with on the three occasions we had to speak...

FB Justin Griffith, Mississippi State -- Ran 4.55 in the 40... at 5-foot-11, 229 pounds... also did 29 reps of 225 pounds... seen as a combination back... RB, FB and one-back...

FB Casey Moore, Stanford -- Ran 4.69 in the 40... at 6-foot-1, 250 pounds... caught the ball well... looked more athletic in drills than most thought...

WR Kevin Curtis, Utah State -- Ran 4.43 in the 40... at 5-foot-11, 186 pounds.. recorded an amazing 48 in the Wonderlic... interviewed very well... pushed himself up towards the second round... especially with return skills and pass catching ability...

WR Tyrone Calico, Middle Tennessee State -- Ran 4.33 in the 40... at 6-foot-4, 223 pounds... great size/speed prospect... needs work on his hands/routes... but it is hard to turn away from those numbers... just look what Jerry Porter (Raiders) has done with similar physical tools...

WR Doug Gabriel, Central Florida -- Ran 4.50 in the 40... at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds... under-rated workout performance... has the size/speed teams crave... he is not a finshed product... but was one of the few bigger receivers to run well at the Combine...

WR Nate Burleson, Nevada -- Ran 4.47 in the 40... at 6-foot-0, 197 pounds... also had 42.5" vertical... stepped out of the shadow of being just a product of a passing system... those numbers will likely get him drafted late on the first day...

WR Ryan Hoag, Gustavus Adolphus -- Ran 4.42 in the 40... at 6-foot-2, 201 pounds... caught the ball well... and has added 10 pounds to his frame since last spring... moved himself from late round to mid-round consideration... great kid, as well...

TE Vishante Shiancoe, Morgan State -- Ran 4.68 in the 40... at 6-foot-4, 251 pounds... did 28 reps of 225 pounds... improving blocker with downfield pass-catching potential... also has three Pro Days to impress scouts...

TE LJ Smith, Rutgers -- Ran 4.64 in the 40... at 6-foot-3, 258 pounds... also did 26 reps of 225 pounds... had one of the best physiques at the Combine... proved to be fully recovered from a hamstring injury he had at the Senior Bowl...

OL Eric Steinbach, Iowa -- Ran 4.88 in the 40... at 6-foot-6, 297 pounds... had 36" vertical... ran his drills very well... looked agile and showed that he might very well have the ability to play left tackle in the NFL...

OL Jordan Gross, Utah -- Ran 5.03 in the 40... at 6-foot-5, 300 pounds... did 28 reps of 225 pounds... had 31.5" vertical... and really helped himself by doing a full workout at the Combine... scouts/teams liked his willingness to do everything asked of him... also interviewed well...

OL Kwame Harris, Stanford -- Ran 5.06 in the 40... at 6-foot-7, 310 pounds... had 35.5" vertical... did not bench press... but looked very sharp in his drills... was also tried at left tackle during his session... and seemed to be a natural fit... one of his biggest positives... is that he is just 20 years old...

OL Wayne Hunter, Hawaii -- Ran 5.07 in the 40... at 6-foot-6, 303 pounds... did 37 reps of 225 pounds... very enjoyable kid to interview... has a great deal of athleticism and upside... he could be the next guy to come off the board after the first few big names...

OL Vince Manuwai, Hawaii -- Ran 5.02 in the 40... at 6-foot-2, 304 pounds... did 32 reps of 225 pounds... and eye-raising 4.20 in the short shuttle... does not appear to be the biggest lineman available... but will also take some snaps at center during his Pro Day...

OL Wade Smith, Memphis -- Ran 5.12 in the 40... at 6-foot-4, 300 pounds... had 32.5" vertical... did very well in his drills... versatile enough to play anywhere along the offensive line... has also gained 10 pounds since the end of the season...

OL Makoa Freitas, Arizona -- Ran 5.04 in the 40... at 6-foot-4, 305 pounds... did 36 reps of 225 pounds... that combo of size, quickness and strength will move him up the charts... seen as a possible right tackle or offensive guard...

OL Todd Williams, Florida State -- Ran 5.22 in the 40... at 6-foot-5, 340 pounds... had 32" vertical... and ran his drills very well for a lineman of his size... played right tackle in college... but most love his size/power inside at offensive guard...

DEFENSE:

DL Kevin Williams, Oklahoma State -- Ran 4.85 in the 40... at 6-foot-5, 307 pounds... did 23 reps of 225 pounds... and had a well-built physique for someone that has added roughly 10 pounds since the season ended...

DL Chris Kelsay, Nebraska -- Ran 4.71 in the 40... at 6-foot-4, 273 pounds... plays with a very high motor... impressed teams in his interviews... is now a late first to early second round pick...

DL Tyler Brayton, Colorado -- Ran 4.67 in the 40... at 6-foot-6, 267 pounds... also did 25 reps of 225 pounds... this has been one of our personal favorites all season...

DL Nick Eason, Clemson -- Ran 5.04 in the 40... at 6-foot-3, 301 pounds... did 29 reps of 225 pounds... surprised scouts by deciding to run at the last minute... ran well... and that will bump him up 5-10 picks come April...

DL Jerome McDougle, Miami -- Ran 4.61 in the 40... at 6-foot-2, 264 pounds... worked out at both defensive end and linebacker... working out at the Combine really impressed scouts... and should place him among the Top-25 picks...

DL Shurron Pierson, South Florida -- Ran 4.58 in the 40... at 6-foot-2, 247 pounds... also had 10'8" broad jump... worked out at both defensive end and linebacker... and looked much better in the linebacker drills than most expected... likely made himself into a early second day selection...

DL Andrew Williams, Miami -- Ran 4.62 in the 40... at 6-foot-2, 262 pounds... did 26 reps of 225 pounds... 32" vertical... and had only 7.8% body fat... under-rated pass rusher with some upside... also has the frame to fillout to over 270 pounds...

DL James Lee, Oregon State -- Ran 4.97 in the 40... at 6-foot-4, 327 pounds... did 23 reps of 225 pounds... and showed he is more than just a "Rising Star"...

LB Chaun Thompson, West Texas A&M -- Ran 4.48 in the 40... at 6-foot-2, 240 pounds... had 35" vertical... did 29 reps of 225 pounds... and was solid in his drills... was viewed at both linebacker spots... that increased his stock, as well...

LB Antwan Peek, Cincinnati -- Ran 4.52 in the 40... worked out at both defensive end and outside linebacker... 3-4 teams loved his speed... will be able to play right away as an edge rusher... good all-around athlete...

LB Pisa Tinoisamoa, Hawaii -- Ran 4.56 in the 40... came in at 6-foot-0, 231 pounds... the increased weight and faster 40-time both helped his cause... sure-fire second round choice... best footwork of any linebacker in the draft...

LB Nick Barnett, Oregon State -- Ran 4.58 in the 40... did 32 reps of 225 pounds... and came in at 6-foot-2, 236 pounds... he was 12 pounds heavier than at the East/West Shrine Game...

LB Kawika Mitchell, South Florida -- Ran 4.65 in the 40... at 253 pounds... much quicker and agile than most had anticipated... once teams go back and view more game film this kid will likely move up a full round...

LB Khalid Abdullah, Mars Hill -- Ran 4.59 in the 40... came in at 227 pounds... the brother of former Cleveland Browns DE/OLB Rahim Abdullah... small school prospect with some good upside potential...

DB Terence Newman, Kansas State -- Ran 4.34 in the 40... was shooting for 4.2's... also did 41" vertical... was one of the best all-around athletes in attendance... Top-5 pick after workout...

DB Marcus Trufant, Washington State -- Ran 4.37 in the 40... did 11 reps of 225 pounds... and showed up at 5-foot-11, 199 pounds... will not get past the first 12-to-15 picks..

DB Kevin Garrett, SMU -- Exploded out of the blocks... ran 4.32 on some watches... very quick... likely secured a place among the Top-5 corners in the draft...

DB Colin Branch, Stanford -- Great workout... 4.39 in the 40... 23 reps of 225 pounds... also has good bloodlines... related to both Cliff and Calvin Branch, who have both played in the NFL...

DB Sammy Davis, Texas A&M -- Ran 4.46 in the 40... 40" vertical and 18 reps of 225 pounds... great combination of physical numbers from a kid that makes plays both on defense and special teams...

DB Dennis Weathersby, Oregon State -- Came back to life with sub-4.4 40-times... did only 9 reps of 225 pounds... but at 6-foot-0, 204 pounds... his speed will be attractive to some team early...

DB Rashean Mathis, Bethune-Cookman -- 22 reps of 225 pounds... 4.42 in the 40... and showed up at 202 pounds... free safety that is also being viewed by some as a cornerback...

DB Derek Pagel, Iowa -- 25 reps of 225 pounds... and averaged 4.55 in the 40... pure SS that helped himself a lot...

SPECIAL TEAMS:

K Seth Marler, Tulane -- Nailed all 12 of his field goal attempts... ask any team about what consistency in a kicker means...

K Todd Sievers, Miami -- Only kicker in his group to reach the endzone on his kickoffs... versatile, as he can kick, kickoff and punt...

P Mat McBriar, Hawaii -- Little guy with a great leg... was also willing to be interviewed after a long day of workouts and team meetings...

P Glenn Pakulak, Kentucky -- 23 reps of 225 pounds for a punter is outstanding... and he has the leg strength to kick in all types of weather conditions.

I think we should try to acquire one of the saints picks and draft Rashean Mathis, and use our pick on Kelly Washington. I like the talent of both of those players.

I'll take any combination of K. Williams, Kelly Washington, and Rahean Mathis on the first day. Also, if we can at some point trade down and pick up a fourth and a fifth , I'll take Ryan Hoag (Go Gusties!!!) and James Lee of Oregon St.
