Sean Taylor Hits Hard

in death as in life, Sean Taylor just crushes you - physically and emotionally.

for all the moralizing we've heard, and are gonna hear, and dear God make them stop, Sean Taylor life was one of a leader.

he was The One we looked to when all else failed and played that position as defensive safety. not only was he his defensive coordinator Gregg Williams security blanket, he was our Superman. in football, we all seem to need one - just ask the Ravens about Ray Lewis or the Patriots about Tom Brady - and there is no shame in this.

for the B&G, we had 20 years of Darrell Green, then LaVar Arrington, until fortune smiled upon us in Sean Taylor.

how he made us feel was because of how he performed.

he never made excuses and he tried his best to live his life on his own terms. his independence was never ****y. his charitable acts never made the headlines.

erudite and polite to the extreme to anyone who came in contact with him - unless you were on the opposite side of the football field, where he showed you the ultimate respect by bringing it strong each and every down he played. just ask Patrick Crayton or better yet, Terrell Owens.

even his indiscretions were those we could relate to in terms of youthful miscues: an alleged DUI, hocking up an inadvertent loogie while trashtalking an opponent, defending your personal property.

but even Superman has to deal with kryptonite: he couldn't do it all alone, no matter how hard he tried.

from a football perspective, his 2006 season tells the story there. even as he personally achieved ProBowl status, he was unable to effectively help his team win consistently without healthy teammates around him.

the son of a former police chief, his seeming determination not to fall back on that privilege was a mark of one who even at a young age wanted to make his own place in the world. that, along with his up close and personal awareness of the limits of US law enforcement, most likely contributed to the shortening of his life.

so after being excused from Washington Redskins team activities due to injury, he spent the 2007 Thanksgiving weekend with his family after prior burglary attempts on his home. except now it appears that it wasn't burglary as much as a much lesser male individual couldn't appropriately deal with the man that was Sean Taylor.

as unbelievable as it seems that we will no longer be able to release cheers of primal wonder at his amazing athletic prowess, it's the other losses that are truly unfathomable.

we will sorely miss Sean Taylor, for the bone crushing impact of his life cannot be denied.
