My take on our future (regarding players)

After taking a look at the age we have at each position, it looks like we could be a perennial palyoff team. If we don't squander away draft picks, we could stack up our roster quickly with talent and leave them a couple of years to develop. Here's how I see it. I give each position a "future rating" based on the skill and age of the position, and how hard it will be to fill the gaps.

Offense:

QB - Jason Campbell (25), Todd Collins(35), Mark Brunell(36), & Jordan Palmer(23)

-Future Rating: B-

-Why?: Campbell looks to be developing into the real deal, but is still unproven. Palmer might be good for a long term project, but we can do better at drafting a young QB to play the 1st backup role. We will most likey pick one up in the mid rounds next draft, or get a starter cast-off next offseason. Brunell will be traded this season, or gone in the off season. Collins will be around one more season. This has more to do with salary than anything else.

HB - Clinton Portis(26), Ladell Betts(28), Rock Cartwright(27), Marcus Mason(23)

-Future Rating: A

-Why?: CP is a great young HB. And Betts still has a few serviceable years left in him. If CP shows signs of wear this year, the situation could change. He will cost a pretty penny against the cap, so his health is key. Mason surpised many by making the roster this year, which doesn't bode well for rock. Rock will most likely be gone next year, and Mason will become a good backup. We won't need to use a draft pick on this spot unless a steal comes up, for competition, or we lose Portis for the season again.

WR - Santana Moss(28), Randel El(27), Lloyd(26), Thrash(32)

-Future Rating: C+

-Why?: Moss will be fine for another couple of years, And we have Randel El and Lloyd locked up for a few years as well. Our WR rating without regards to age could range from an A to a D this year, so I went for the middle. Assuming Lloyd and Randel El pan out, we will be ok for a couple of years. We need to spend an upper draft pick or two on good talent to develop and compete without much cost. A big body wouldn't hurt either. This is most likely Thrashes last year. No other WRs we have are really worth mention.

FB - Mike Sellers(32), Brian Bell(Unk)

-Future Rating: C-

-Why?: Sellers is a great starting FB. Maybe the most under-rated in the league. Thing is... he's getting up there in age, and we don't have a real successor. Bell is there on the practice squad for depth, not to start in the future. Gibbs has an eye for this position, so we will most likely find one next year. Quality FBs are usually locked up, so we will most likely look to the draft to start grooming a successor. I would say towards the 4-5th round.

TE - Chris Cooley(25), Todd Yoder(29), Cody Boyd(23), Tyler Ecker(24)

-Future Rating: B+

-Why?: Cooley is an A in himself, but there's no real future depth. our 7th rounder, Ecker, is still unproven due to injury. He wasn't looking to good in training camp before hand. Yoder is a decent backup, but he's 29. He might stay on the roster for a while as a blocking TE. Boyd is just temporary depth.

O-line

Tackle - Chris Samuels(30), Jon Jansen(31), Todd Wade(30), Stephon Heyer(23), Jason Fabini(31)

Guard - Randy Thomas(31), Pete Kendall(34)

-Future Rating: C

-Why?: If you talk about our line now, when healthy, its more like an A. If you talk about it from the standpoint of depth, age, and development, its closer to a C-. With the exception of Heyer, an UDFA, every O-lineman is 30+. Granted... lineman tend to play into their mid 30's until they retire. Veteren savvy makes up for alot as a lineman, and we have plenty of that. Kendell will probably be gone at the end of next season at 35/36. We do have the rest of the line locked up for a few years, and they could keep playing together for the entire time. But that can easily change do to injuries and the salary cap.We have good depth at tackle, but guard looks to be a weakspot. The problem lies at developing young players. It can take years for a young O-lineman to develop. It hasn't been until the past 3-4 years where our line has come together. It looks like Heyer might be a steal and develop into a strong LT, but we need to spend some picks in this area and keep a strong line in rotation for years to come.

Offense Overall

Future Rating: C+

Why?: We have good starters, and good age in our skill positions. We need more depth in everything other than HB in the future. We need more development players out of the draft, especially for the guys in the trenches.

Defense

DT - Cornelius Griffin(30), Anthony Montgomery(23), Kedric Golston(24), Ryan Boschetti(25), Lorenzo Alexander(23)

Future Rating: C

Why?: This rating could change to a A this year if Golston and Montgomery continue their success from pre-season. As for now... they are unproven. Griffin is a beast when healthy, but his body isn't able to keep up w/ his drive like it used to. Boschetti and Alexander may turn out to be decent backups, but that has yet to be proven as well. We shouldn't have to spend a pick on this position for a while if everything works out. If either Golston or Montgomery falter... look to us going high in the draft or FA to get someone.

DE - Andre Carter(28), Phillip Daniels(34), Demetric Evans(27), Chris Wilson(25), Alex Buzbee(24?)

Future Rating: D-

Why?: Carter has yet to be the elite DE we hired him to be, and Daniels was above average in his prime. Carter is 28 to begin with, and this is most likely Daniel's las year as a starter. Evans is a career backup. Wilson and Buzbee may turn out to be good, but its a long shot. We will need another DE on the other side of Carter. If Carter or Daniels get place on IR, I could see us pulling off a trademark redskins deal in or to find a replacement for him this year. Even if we did... I doubt we would get a great DE in the year, so look to us drafting high next year or spending $ in FA to shore up this position... possibly both.

MLB - London Fletcher(32), H.B. Blades(22)

Future Rating: B

Why?: Fletcher is one of the best MLBs in the league. He may not have much of an injury history, but he is 32. He will be our starter for as long as he is healthy. Blades looks to be a great successor. He has yet to prove himself in a real game situation, but he'll get his chance.

OLB - Rocky McIntosh(24), Marcus Washington(29), Randall Godfrey(34), Khary Campbell(28), Anthony Trucks(?)

Future Rating: C-

Why?: We have one proven starter in Marcus Washington. Rocky looks like he is going to be a real playmaker, but that's it for young talent. Godfrey is a solid LB, but he's a filler for the year. Campbell is a career backup, and Trucks is a long-term project at best. We will need another starter next year, whether it comes from FA or the Draft. Letting go of Marshall hurt our depth. Any way you look at it, we will need to spend some picks on development players next year.

CB - Shawn Springs(32), Carlos Rogers(26) Fred Smoot(28), David Macklin(29) Leigh Torrence(25), Byron Westbrook(22)

Future Rating: B

Why?: Springs is good when healthy, but he's gone after this year none-the-less. Smoot and Macklin are quality backups, and although Smoot is good at man2man coverage, he's not a good #1 option. Rogers has to prove himself to be a #1 CB this year or we may be drafting high for one. Even if he doesn't, we may stick w/ Rogers and Smoot as starters, and sign another FA for depth. That could of course change if our young CBs develop well.

Safety - Sean Taylor(24), LaRon Landry(22), Pierson Prioleau(30), Reed Doughty(24), Vernon Fox(27)

Future Rating: A-

Why?: This changes to A+ if Landry lives up to his hype. You know the deal... two young safeties with the potential of being the best tandem in the league. Behind them we have a good veteran in Prioleau and Fox, and Doughty looks to be a good development backup. This is the strong-spot on the roster when its strength in the future. We won't be doing much in the draft or FA here.

Defense Overall

Future Rating: B-

Why?: Our DB positions look solid for years to come, and our LB is comming along. Our young DTs could turn out to be a strength in the future, but it has yet to be tested. Our LB core has some promise, but we need a little more youth to learn from the veterans. DE seems to be the weakspot. The only strength... Carter, still has to prove himself. Daniels should be playing a veteran backup role, but we don't have any young talent strong enough to challenge him.

Team Overall

Future Rating: C+

Potential Future Rating: A

If we bring some young talent in on both sides of the trenches. If Campbell, Rogers, Landry, Montgomery, Golston, Rocky, Blades and our other young talent come together. If we shore up DE. Alot of if's. But they are all achievable. We have the youth and talent in many spots. This will be a team to recon with in years to come.
